O you who believe! when you rise up
to prayer, wash your faces and your
hands as far as the elbows, and wipe
your heads and your feet to the
ankles;
Quran Al Maida 5:6
“Maintain with care the (obligatory) prayers and (in
particular) the middle prayer and stand before Allah,
devoutly obedient.”
Quran Al Baqara 2:238
The pattern of the daily prayer called
salah performed by Muslims 5 times a day
is similar all over the world.
In a study, the motion of joints during
salah was measured by a Goniometer
commonly used by clinicians.
The active range of motions for each of
the joints that were involved during salah
Were examined .
A goniometer has two arms with full-circled scales
marked in degrees. It was placed on the joints at
different postures of salah, and joint angles were
measured precisely.
Zero degrees were regarded as starting points and
motions were recorded as deviation from zero degrees.
Takbiratul ihram.
Posture: stand up straight, lift both arms
parallel to the ear.
Benefits: This movement is beneficial for
blood flow to the lymph nodes and also for
strengthening the arm muscles. When both
arms are raised, the shoulder muscles are
stretched to make the smooth flow of
oxygen-rich blood .
This action is a therapy for various joint
problems, particularly in the upper body.
Worshippers have to stand and
concentrate their minds on praying.
A reactive depression is common in
geriatric and disabled persons.
The determination to pray has a
remedial action on depression, and
standing helps to develop balance.
When people stand comfortably, the
center of pressure is usually midway
between the instep of the two feet.
Reciting while Standing in Prayers
Worshippers utter some verses from
the holy Quran in Arabic. Like any
other language, various muscles are
exercised during the speech. There is
a bilateral increase in blood flow in
the face, tongue, mouth sensory and
motor areas, and the upper premotor
cortex in the brain during speech .
During creative speech, there is also
an increase in blood flow in the areas
where speech is controlled in the
brain. Blood flow in the brain can be
measured by functional magnetic
resonance imaging (fMRI) and positron
emission tomography (PET.)
A perfect Ruku is done when
one bows with the back at an
angle of 90 degrees.
A proper Ruku helps to control
backache and vertebral column
related diseases.
The Ruku is effective in
developing flexibility to
shoulder, elbows wrist, knees
and ankle regions. Ruku exerts
abdominal pressure thereby
eases constipation and
peristaltic movements.
During Ruku, the kidney
experiences a sort of massage
thus helpful to kidney
problems.
Sajdah is very beneficial in the proper functioning of
brain, lungs, body muscles, joints and entire
vertebral column. Sajdah helps to maintain smooth
blood to the brain region, and also stimulates the
master gland pituitary gland as well as the pineal
gland.
Sajdah reduces the chances of brain hemorrhage and
headache due to smooth blood flow to the head
region. While performing Sajdah, the toes are
experiencing acupressure which is good for better
health of the body, especially for body pains. The
unique position of Sajdah also has positive effects
upon the back muscles as while going into Sajdah and
getting up from it the back muscle contract actively
and they become stronger.
After performing Sajdah either the person stands up
or he sits to Finish the prayer, by reciting Tashahud .
In this position the person sits calmly while his hands
rest at his thighs. This is much similar to the
relaxation position of Yoga and has soothing effect
upon one's health and mentation.
The action of Tashahud in salat is helpful in
loosening the neck joints and also helps to relax
the shoulder and upper back muscles. Salam
helps to refresh all the nerves that pass through
the neck, hence giving comfort in headaches
and migraines.
