Socrates Vs Emerson
In their work of explaining and utilizing self reliance, Socrates and Emerson similarly reference this
idea and how standing up for one s own beliefs will impact others. Socrates charges brought upon him
by accusers such as Meletus and Anytus are punishable by death. Though he may lose his life, he
refuses to surrender his original ideas and defends philosophy without changing his views even with
the impending death sentence. In the same way, Emerson s theme of self reliance dictates that
everyone should use it to combat conformity. I ve always been taught that believing in yourself is key.
Although many people allege that they rely on themselves, I claim that Socrates and Emerson s beliefs
about self reliance are significant because believing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Emerson, people need to Insist on yourself; never imitate (Emerson 18). Anyone familiar
with the saying be yourself can appreciate this idea. He further explains his method of self reliance
and how it will be beneficial in the long run. People should be self reliant and pursue their ideas.
Emerson is correct in implying that no one should ever back down or succumb to imitation which
could lead to more mindless thinking. Relying solely on yourself can present better opportunities than
carelessly repeated nonsense. This is one of the reasons that teachers say not to cheat on tests. They
explain that there is no use in trying to copy off of your partner s work because they could be wrong,
but people still do it. Therefore, these cheaters will never learn to think or figure things out on their
own. In life, the most successful people are the ones who are resilient and self sufficient instead of
selfish and easily discouraged. Socrates also brought up imitation when he talked of young people
imitating him, but they did not understand him. In the same way, Emerson s theme of self reliance is
the foundation of leadership and

Social Penetration Theory
Founder of the theory
The founders of the theory were Irwin Altman and Dalmas Taylor. Altman is a distinguished professor
of psychology at the University of Utah whereby Taylor is a professor of psychology at the University
of Texas, Arlington.
Altman and Taylor developed this theory to provide an understanding of the closeness between two
individuals. Apparently, social penetration is defined as a process that moves a relationship from non
intimate to intimate. The theory states that this process occurs primarily through self disclosure and it
is guided by the assumptions that relationship development is systematic and predictable and it is also
include deterioration or growing apart. This theory also claims that people s ... Show more content on

The decision to disclose is based on the perceived rewards the person will gain if he or she discloses
information. If a person perceives that the cause of disclosing information is greater that the rewards
for disclosing information than no information will be disclosed. The larger the reward cost ratio the
more disclosure takes place. If you think to the relationships you have been in you will probably find
that in almost all of them more disclosure took place at the out sets of the relationship than at any
other place. That happens because people initially disclose superficial information that costs very little
if another person finds it out.
Future Development of The Theory
To understand the proximity relationship between two people, Irwin Altman and Dalmas Taylor
(1973) conceptualized a theory called Social Penetration. Both made extensive studies in an area of
social ties on various types of couples. Their theory describes a pattern of relationship development, a
process which they identify as social penetration. Social penetration refers to a bonding process in
which a relationship of individuals to move from superficial communication toward a more intimate
communication.
The relationship is regular and predictable in its development. This is because the relationship is
something important and ...already exists in the heart of our humanity (Rogers and Escudero, 2004).

New Public Management Model For The Nonprofit Agency,...
New Public Management and the Role of Nonprofit Organizations: Cultivating the Public Sector
The purpose of this paper is to apply the new public management model to the nonprofit agency,
Hands Across the World. First, an overview of the new public management model is provided.
Second, a brief description of the nonprofit organization, Hands Across the World is provided. Third,
the new public management model is applied to Hands Across the World.
New Public Management Today the new public management (NPM) model is the leading worldview
in the public sector. The political climate and ideology during the 1970s and 1980s served as an
impetus to migrate away from the old public administration approach and implement new policies and
procedures that would be of better service to the public interest and collective good as well as restore
trust and value in the bureaucratic process. Thus, during the mid 1990s, the new public management
worldview was realized to apply common practices used in the private sector to the public sector. The
goal of this approach was to achieve the same level of efficiency found in the private sector and
remove some of the redundancy, lack of transparency, and lack of accountability in bureaucratic
government to better serve the public interest. David Osborne and Ted Gaebler s Reinventing
Government (1992) served as a catalytic novel in the progression of implementing private practices in
the public sector. Under the NPM framework public administrators

Guideline For The Treatment Of Early And Established RA
Treatment of Early and Established RA How treatment for early and established RA differs based on
current and evidence based practice? According to the 2015 Guideline for the treatment of RA
developed by the ACR, the approach to treat early and established RA is different. The treatment
recommendations by the ACR for early and established RA are as follows: Early RA: The early RA is
defined as RA with duration of disease/symptoms of 6 months (Singh et al., 2016, p.4) and duration
does not represent the time since RA diagnosis, but the length of time the patient has had symptoms.
The treatment of the early RA begins with DMARDs i.e. methotrexate as monotherapy along with

The treatment of the established RA begins with DMARDs i.e. methotrexate as monotherapy along
with short term glucocorticoids ( 3 months for RA disease flares). However, if the symptoms persist
on methotrexate a combination therapy or single therapy with biologic DMARDs can be started. The
combination therapy includes two/more nonbiologic DMARDs alone or methotrexate with biologic
DMARDs. The low dose glucocorticoids (10 mg/day of prednisone) for short term can be used during
combination therapy. If the single biologics or combination therapy fails, the steps shown in the
flowchart (see figure 5) should be followed to treat established RA. Figure 5: 2015 ACR
recommendations for the treatment of established RA Indication: * = consider adding low dose
glucocorticoids (10 mg/day of prednisone or equivalent) in patients with moderate or high RA disease
activity when starting traditional disease modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and in patients
with DMARD failure or biologic failure. † = also consider using short term glucocorticoids (defined
as 3 months treatment) for RA disease flares. Glucocorticoids should be used at the lowest possible
dose and for the shortest possible duration to provide the best benefit risk ratio for the patient. # =
treatment target should ideally be low disease activity or remission. ** = tapering denotes scaling back

Comprehensive Preparation For A Complete Life
Comprehensive Preparation for a Complete Life
Teen pregnancy has been a serious social issue for quite a while. Often, a teen pregnancy is
detrimental for both the teen and the child involved. Both a teen mother and her child are more
susceptible to complications during the pregnancy and birth than and adult mother and her child.
Unfortunately, a teen mother and her infant are also less likely to pursue and receive healthcare to
alleviate these health risks (Teen Pregnancy). Moreover, teen pregnancy is often cited as a factor that
perpetuates the cycle of poverty, since teen mothers are likely to be poor in the first place, and their
children are likely to grow up to be poor (Teen Pregnancy). While there is no argument that teens
should be educated to prevent teen pregnancy, there is a debate on how it should be done. Currently,
there are two forms of education focused on reducing teen pregnancies: abstinence only education and
comprehensive sex education with birth control. However, sex education and birth control are clearly
the superior option, due to its effectiveness and the futility of abstinence only education.
Comprehensive sex education with an emphasis on birth control is a much more effective educational
tool to prevent teen pregnancy than abstinence only education. Fortunately, teen pregnancy rates have
fallen dramatically in the past 20 years. In 2002, the rate of pregnancy was 75.4 for every 1,000
women between the ages of 15 and 19, from 116.9 in 1990 (Teen

The Workforce Is Growing Older As The Population Ages
The workforce is growing older as the population ages. The elderly in this generation are living
significantly longer. The amount of older workers is increasing due to the baby boomer generation.
The number of older workers over 55 is projected to grow at nearly four times the rate of the overall
labor force (Shultz, pg.7) Many older workers are choosing to stay in the workforce. An increasing
amount of older workers are choosing to prolong retirement. Population aging will significantly
increase the amount of older workers. Between 1977 and 2007, employment of workers 65 and over
increased 101 percent, compared to a much smaller increase of 59 percent for total employment (16
and over). The number of employed men 65 and over rose 75 ... Show more content on

The number of workers between the ages of 65 and 74 and those aged 75 and up are predicted to soar
by more than 80 percent. By 2016, workers age 65 and over are expected to account for 6.1 percent of
the total labor force, up sharply from their 2006 share of 3.6 percent (U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics,
2008). The majority of older adults remain in the workforce due to the economic downturn and not
being able to afford retirement. Older adults continue to work in order to gain financial stability. Many
workers age 65 and older are unprepared for retirement.
Older workers are working longer due to the decrease in financial assets, low interest rates, shift to
401(k) s, higher social security retirement age, and longevity. There has been a significant decrease in
the value of retirement assets. With the shift away from defined benefit and towards defined
contribution pensions like 401(k)s, changes in financial markets have a more direct effect on many
workers retirement savings (Orszag, 2009). Financial assets have lost value because of the financial
crisis. Many older adults lost a large amount of their financial assets because they withdrew funds
from their financial accounts in order to survive the financial crisis. Some 62 percent of people
between ages 45 and 60 experienced at least a 20 percent decline in the value of their financial assets
since the beginning of the crisis, compared with only 42 percent in 2010, according to the Conference

Critical Analysis Of Forrest Gump
Its hero, played by Tom Hanks, is a thoroughly decent man with an IQ of 75, who manages between
the 1950s and the 1980s to become involved in every major event in American history. And he
survives them all with only honesty and kindness as his shields. And yet this is not a heartwarming
story about a mentally retarded man. That cubbyhole is much too small and limiting for Forrest Gump.
The movie is more of a meditation on our times, as seen through the eyes of a man who lacks
cynicism and takes things for exactly what they are. Watch him carefully and you will understand why
some people are criticized for being too clever by half. Forrest is clever by just exactly enough. Tom
Hanks may be the only actor who could have played the role. I can t think of anyone else as Gump,
after seeing how Hanks makes him into a person so dignified, So straight ahead. The performance is a
breathtaking balancing act between comedy and sadness, in a story rich in big laughs and quiet truths.
Forrest is born to an Alabama boardinghouse Owner (Sally Field) who tries to correct his posture by
making him wear braces, but who never criticizes his mind. When Forrest is called stupid, his mother
tells him, Stupid is as stupid does, and Forrest turns out to be incapable of doing anything less than
profound. Also, when the braces finally fall from his legs, it turns out he can run like the wind. That s

Women In The Bayeux Tapestry
The Bayeux Tapestry was produced shortly after the Conquest of England in 1066. Shichtman writes
that throughout the Middle Ages both churchmen as well as secular writers were attempting to come
to terms with a conception of time and history still undergoing revision. This Tapestry tries to grapple
with recording history in the Middle Ages, as it details the Story of William the Conqueror defeating
Harold the Earl of Wessex at the Battle of Hastings. While the Tapestry depicts numerous men, who
participated in this historical event, the artist only include six women in the Tapestry. This essay will

Kraus states that as for the woman merchant, all legislation of the Middle Ages concurred in granting
her full civil status, even if married. And the artisan s wife paid her own poll tax, and Kraus continues
later that there was equal division of his possessions between male and female descendants was a right
that was written into most communal charters. Women lived as equal members in society if they
worked or had land. These charters provided women with wider aspirations in an otherwise male
dominated society. The Doomsday Book recorded that three hundred and fifty women held land in the
time of Edward the Confessor. Henrietta Leyster records how a Yorkshire woman named Asa held her
land separate and free from the lordship and power of Bjornulfr her husband, even when they were
together, so that he could neither give it, nor sell it, nor forfeit it. After their separation, she withdrew
from her land and possessed it as a lady. In order for a woman to keep her privileges, she must first
have land. This was only the case for Anglo Saxon women, as Anglo Norman women could not make
wills or hold land. After the Conquest, however, women gained equal rights with men, as they both

The Invention Of Artificial Intelligence
The idea that machines and technology can, and are, becoming intelligent is a scary thought.
Throughout the history of technology, there has been a steady increase in the capabilities of software,
and much research has gone into how these capabilities can be used to better our lives. In our lives
today, we all use some form of Artificial Intelligence daily. Some of these activities include: using
cellular apps (Google Maps, Siri, Cortana), playing video games, and listening to music. Although the
use of Artificial Intelligence has made human life more efficient and effective, it has also insinuated
reliance and unsuspecting ignorance into our minds as well, and we do not even see it coming. The

The mission statement that was developed during the conference stated, Every aspect of learning or
other feature of intelligence can, in principle, be so precisely described that a machine can be made to
simulate it. As a result of the Dartmouth summer research project, The General Problem Solver was
born. Created by Herbert Simon, J.C. Shaw, and Allen Newell, the general problem solver originated
as a theory of human program, specifically a program that stimulates human thought . The basis of the
general problem solver was to use general logic and algorithms to solve common sense problems.
Initially, it could only be used in well defined problems, basically proving theorems that had already
been created. Although with the introduction of the personal computer in the 1980s and the evolution
of smart devices, Artificial intelligence has become practically a daily necessity in our lives today. By
the current year 2017, Artificial Intelligence has grown much larger than simply The General Problem
Solver. Technologists now differentiate between AI and ML (Machine Learning) when considering
intelligence. While artificial intelligence is the broader way of describing a machine being able to
complete a task using human input, machine learning is specifically a division of artificial intelligence
in which computers can self learn without the need for human programming. In simplest terms, the
goal of machine learning is to

Water Issues California was in a massive drought just this past year which became known as a state

water. Many farmers had to drill there wells deeper to reach the water table, so they could keep their
crops alive. However, the homeowners who didn t have the money to drill another well, had to go to
their local Fire station or water supply to get their own water in a tank. Just this past winter California
was hit with a lot of rain and they didn t seem ready for it, therefore California should have acted upon

Charlie Chaplin s Contributions to the Film Industry
Charlie Chaplin Every day millions of Americans go to theaters with their families to enjoy movies.
Watching films has become one of the most popular activities to do. Although plenty of people know
of Charlie Chaplin, most do not know any real information about him. Charlie Chaplin has been a
major contributor to America s advancement in the film industry from his innovative beginnings, and
perseverance to improve and succeed, to his overall achievements in history. Charlie Chaplin was born
in South London on April 16, 1889. He was the first child of Hannah and Charles Chaplin. Charles
was vaudeville actor. Hannah was a vaudeville singer. Charlie s father was a drunk and he later left his
family when he was three years old when he found out his wife had an affair with another actor, Leo
Dryden. They soon had a child named George, who left to live with his father. Since Hannah was now
a single mother, she was struggling to find a way to provide for her children. She had another son that
was older than Charlie, from a previous relationship (Schwartz). Hannah s singing alone was not
enough to earn her the money to care for two boys. She took up sweatshop work on a sewing machine
she rented to earn extra income. Due to the small amount of income they had, Charlie s family moved
in and out of orphanages and boys homes on a regular basis. Hannah s career as a singer ended
abruptly in 1894. She lost her voice during a performance. While the crowd was getting rowdy and

What set the Cistercian order apart from other monastic...
The speed, extent and tenacity of Cistercian expansion was by all accounts extraordinary, and one that
seemed to differ greatly from the other monastic movements of the twelfth century. Their growth from
one to seven foundations, to more than three hundred in the space of fifty years was almost entirely
unexpected by contemporary standards. However, when one delves into the history of the order and
looks at the factors that differentiated it from other similar monastic institutions of the same period
one begins to see a number of portentous factors that undoubtedly contributed to such explosive
growth.
Perhaps one reason for Cistercian expansion was the Social Catholicity of it s appeal. This was

Another feature of the Cistercians that was certainly different to other twelfth century monastic

Henry David Thoreau And Romanticism
Henry David Thoreau Henry David Thoreau s words that disobedience is the true foundation of liberty
and that the obedient must be slaves is a political statement that never lost its topicality during the
Romantic era. Thoreau is an important contributor to the philosophical and American literary
movement known as New England Transcendentalism. Nature and the conduct of life are two central
themes that are often weaved together in his essays and books that were published in the Romantic era
of literature. Thoreau brought these two themes together to write on how people ought to live a
simplistic life. His naturalistic writing intertwined cataloging and observation with Transcendentalist
views of nature. Through his life and his work, Henry David Thoreau has contributed to American
Literature since the Romantic era. The Romantic era began in 1770, with its peak being from 1800 to
1850. With emphasis on the imagination and emotion, Romanticism emerged as a result of the
Enlightenment period, which heavily placed values upon reason and order. Thus, Romanticism
depends heavily on the practical accomplishments of the prior un Romantic era a relationship between

Essay The Nazirite Ritual
Introduction
In Numbers 6 the Lord gave Moses instructions on how to consecrate oneself to the Lord in special
service. If we understand the meaning of the rituals and all the rules coming with the rituals we can
understand more about how God wants his elects to be. In this paper I want to show what the meaning
of all the rules for the Nazirites are.
What is a Nazirite
The meaning of the word Nazirite already gives us hints on what a Nazirite is. The hebrew word for
Nazirite means actually the consecrated, the set apart . In Numbers 6 this of course means the ones
consecrated for God. As a lay man one could not work in the temple. The only way to serve God as a
priest was to get born into the tribe of the levites. However, this Nazirite ... Show more content on

Wine was the gateway to shame and greater sin. This can also be seen in Genesis 19:30 36. The two
daughters of Lot make him drunk so they can sleep with him. And even nowadays we can understand
that by indulging in wine we usually do have a higher probability to trespass the holy law of God.
Even in the new Testament in Ephesians 5:18 drunkenness in wine is shown as opposite force to the
holy Spirit: 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,
This does not mean that wine should not be drunk by Christians, rather I want to argue that wine here
is the major image of the entertainment and rather short and unstable joy of this world. Wine was the
major way of having fun and trying to distract oneself from one s own misery. Instead of focusing on
God and getting what we need from him. This of course includes the Joy of the Lord as seen in Acts 2
on the day of Pentecost when the holy spirit filled the disciples.
Another way to look at it is too consider one passage a 7 chapters later. Numbers chapter 13 describes
the how the Israelites approach the borders of Canaan. Canaan is very fruitful so the spies bring back a
lot of fruits. One of the most impressive fruits was apparently a vine they had to carry with two man.
Also the land of Canaan is the promised Land of Milk and Honey to the Israelites, the lacking of faith

US Refugee Policy
The war in Syria has displaced millions of people. The refugees that can have fled to Europe, America,
and most of all their neighboring countries. The United States is trying to do its part, but the refugee
policy isn t helping it do enough. The U.S. refugee policy needs to be changed. The country needs to
help refugees within our borders, as well as help countries taking in the majority of refugees. The U.S.
can also improve the current refugee vetting process, which would greatly increase it s efficiency. One
step towards improving the U.S. s refugee policy is giving more aid to the countries who take in the
most. While the United States is the largest donor to the relief agencies helping refugees settle in

The current process makes it difficult for refugees to be admitted, as it is completed in stages, as well
as just being extremely lengthy. To put things in perspective, the security check, interview, and
biometrics application are all valid for 15 months, while sponsor assurance (from one of nine
organizations in the U.S.) is only acceptable for 12. The medical application is valid for a slim 90
days, and all these applications have to line up within a 60 day travel window for a refugee to be sent
to the United States (Huffington Post). To further complicate things, the president s new 120 day
travel ban could very well cause many refugees applications to expire, sending them back to square
one. By lengthening the validations or decreasing the time it takes for applications to be validated, it
would decrease the time for refugees to enter the country, and with an expanded refugee limit, it
would also allow more refugees to enter. A more efficient vetting process would help refugees in the
country, those who are attempting to enter, as well as relieve pressure from those countries without as
many resources as the U.S. who are taking in many more refugees. The refugee crisis the world is
facing affects almost every country. More developed countries like the United States aren t doing
enough to help these millions of refugees, or the less developed countries who are doing

The Film Analysis Of The Movie The Patriot
The Patriot
The Patriot is known as this action packed, adventurous movie, and most americans have watched this
movie despite the fact of its inaccuracies, also depicting america as great and the british as bad. This
movie takes place in 1776, this was before the declaration of independence was signed and a idea was
proposed about breaking away from the king and initiating a new nation was great but arguable. Not
all the americans wanted to be independent from Great Britain, there was separation between the
rebels and the colonials ,the rebels that wanted have to freedom and the Colonials that wanted to stay
faithful to the king, america was nowhere near to united. The boston incident turned into a civil war.
Later on, loyalists saw the british military as a authorized army, therefore loyalists joining the army
because they were nationalistic like the rebels. However, in the movie they point out one loyalist
because in the movie The Patriot they depict the americans in a positive light because if they stuck to
true history they couldn t do that and would make the americans look bad.
The filmmakers modified the history to put them in positive light for example they created this
American hero named Benjamin Martin they depict him to be this heroic, flawless hero but in fact he is
not even a person in history he is a made up fictional character based on francis marion and made up
of other historical figures. Furthermore, they showed america united when in fact they were

Summer Camp Research Paper
We need to return them better than they were given to us . It was drilled into our heads from day one
of training, until the Friday of the final week. This was not a statement concerning a materialistic item,
but something of infinitely greater value: the lives of children. You would not expect such a heavy
responsibility from your employment at a summer camp. Everyday, we embarked on adventures that
changed their perspectives on the world around them, just as the summer sunshine was changing the
tone of their skin. It was hard to believe how much the kids had developed over the course of the
summer, and it was even harder to comprehend how my interaction with their childhoods fostered
such a departure from mine. Preparing for this job was not easy: a twenty hour training period was to
be completed weeks before the beginning of camp. Delivered to us trainees from the voices of first
hand witnesses, we were exposed to the horrors of child abuse and the gravity of our roles in
preventing it. Child abuse did not happen mostly in dark alley ways, but in places that are filled with
kids and nearby witnesses, which fit the description of the YMCA summer camps perfectly. Long ...

Management Style
As you may know, different management styles are required in different parts of the world. It is
important to choose the right management style for each situation, which is a key to success for an
organization. All managers use a management process which consists of planning, organizing, leading
and controlling. So they have to perform many roles in an enterprise. What they can do with various
situations will totally depend on their style of management. A management style is an overall method
of leadership used by a manager (Lessem et al, 1999). This essay will first demonstrate different types
of management styles, and then discuss three key factors that can influence management style, with
reference to Japan and America.
Each of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Japanese style takes a collective form of responsibility. Those manufactures produce high product
quality at a relatively lower cost (Alston, 1986). The reason is that this sense of collective
responsibility has positively affected the quality standards. Product quality is cooperatively achieved
by workers and managers. Japanese tend to believe the group is more important than the individual
(Alston, 1986). In terms of decision making, they probably attempt to gain consensus even if it might
require more time. As to Americans, who are almost self centered, they apparently choose to make
quick decisions on their own for immediate resolution (Anderson, 2009).
The second factor is staff belonging. The general principle of Japanese management is that workers
form a family (Alston, 1986). As a part of the corporate family , every member not only pays attention
to their own salaries, but also considers the development of the company. Pay is only one reward.
There is also a sense of belongingness and support that employees receive from their corporations. On
the contrary, Americans tend to indicate that there is no need for them to become familiar with one
organization and colleagues before they are off again on their trips (Wellens, 1980). Perhaps
individual freedom is more essential than staff belonging in their mind. This different attitude leads to
diverse management styles. One consequence for Japanese is the practice of lifetime employment. The

Rhetoric In Socrates The Gorgias
The Gorgias is a dialogue in which Socrates expresses his ideas with others about rhetoric. From the
dialogue, it can be argued that the philosopher is a mortal enemy of rhetoric. He condemns it on
ethical and epistemic grounds. Socrates argues that rhetoric is not a real knowledge because it is not a
legitimate art, and that the teachers of rhetoric are nothing but fraudsters. In addition, he asserts that
rhetoric is ethically bankrupt and its main objective is to gratify the ignorant and enhance its experts
power to practice it. It tends to manipulate ignorant individuals into believing on imaginative things.
Therefore, Socrates argues that it is not real art, because a real art should depict a purified rationalism
and knowledge that maintains the changeless good. As a result, Socrates draws a sharp line between
rhetoric and real art or knowledge.
In his argument with Polus, Socrates seems to provide a level ground for both charges against rhetoric.
Socrates asserts that rhetoric is an emperia and a knack based experience. It is a piece of flattery
whose objective is to gratify and provide pleasure, and that it degenerates ethically (Pratt, 2015).
According to Socrates, rhetoric is not part of art. Instead, he refers to it as a flattery giving four

What Is The Availability And Patterns Of Nutrient Uptake...
The availability and patterns of nutrient uptake in biofilms differs from that of planktonic cells. The
bacterial cells in biofilms exchange nutrients and metabolites by means of water channels between the
micro colonies (Kokare et al., 2009). The microbes living deep within natural biofilms may often
receive low nutrition due to restricted rates of diffusion of nutrients through the biofilm (Petroff et al.,
2011). Biofilms are also known to provide a suitable environment for syntrophic relationships between
the two metabolically distinct bacteria for the exchange of substrates/nutrients (Kokare et al., 2009).
Genetic transfer. The bacteria in biofilms readily take part in gene transfer or exchange of extra
chromosomal DNA (Donlan, 2002). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Few hypotheses have emerged to explain the mechanism of antimicrobial resistance in biofilms. For
example, slow and incomplete penetration of biofilm, presence of resistant phenotype of some
bacteria, formation of persister cells and altered environment within biofilms antagonize antibiotic
action (Dufour et al., 2010; Stewart William Costerton, 2001)
Altered stress response. Bacteria in biofilms can express stress responsive genes in greater amount and
switch to forms that are more tolerant. The existence of common regulators, the presence of
extracellular polymeric substances, and biofilm heterogeneity are major factors by which biofilms
show tolerance against various stressors such as, starvation, heat or cold shock, cell density, pH, and
osmolarity (Dufour et al., 2010; Gambino Cappitelli, 2016).
Quorum sensing. Quorum sensing (QS) is a cell to cell communication mechanism, in which a small
diffusible signal molecule is produced, released, sensed and responded to, by bacterial cells (and
Bassler, 2001; Cvitkovitch, Li, Ellen, 2003; Li Tian, 2012; Waters Bassler, 2005). Different QS
signaling molecules and mechanisms have been explored in various bacterial genera over the years
(Irie Parsek, 2008). When the bacterial population reaches a threshold or quorum level, QS signaling
initiates and the auto inducers bind and trigger functions of target genes

Song et al. (2013) developed a practical model evaluate the environmental effectiveness of ITS
strategies by using data from PEMS. The models are developed through considering the influence of
the vehicle s operating mode (VSP distribution) on vehicle emissions, which not only guarantees the
accuracy of emissions and fuel consumption models, but also makes it possible to accumulate current
traffic information systems in Beijing. Wang et al. (2008) established a model based on VSP and
speed, which provided insight that how different levels of cruise speed and acceleration affect vehicle
fuel consumption. The model prediction shows that vehicle fuel consumption per unit distance is
optimum at speeds between 50 and 70 km/h which is similar to the observed data from PEMS. This is
evident in the literature that in order to improve both the applicability and accuracy of the existing
emission models instantaneous vehicle activity data are needed which can be collected from the on
board emission system like PEMS to consider all real conditions which might induce the modeling
errors and improve the model precisions.
In summary, the microscopic simulation modeling has provided an accurate and reliable representation
of vehicular operations in roadway networks so far in the literature. From the literature we also found
that, most of the vehicle emissions data used in modeling are collected in a controlled laboratory

The And Of The Forest
In investigation 1, the data points are very clustered from the height of 150cm to the height of 300cm.
This makes sense as saplings are defined as young trees that are taller than 1.35m above the forest
floor. So between 150cm and 300cm is most likely average height which would be the majority of the
population. The overall data set of investigation 1 is alot more spread out than the compact data set of
investigation 2. On the other hand, in investigation 2 all the data points are overlapping and in line
with the regression line, up to a height of 600cm where there is few data points, indicating that the
majority of saplings taken in this sample are young and planted for regeneration of the forest purposes.
In both cases there is a positive relationship between the two sets of variables. In investigation one, as
H of a sapling increases, the DBH tends to increase. This would make sense because as the sapling
grows up, it subsequently grows in diameter because it manufactures new cells around its
circumference which increase the diameter at breast height in order to maintain and support the weight
of the growing height. On the graph there appears to be some unusal feature s where the height of the
Sapling is approx 450cm however the DBH of just below 10cm is alot lower than the other saplings of
the sample population that have a height of 450cm. It is possible that some sapling trees, like this one,

Running head: ACCOUNTABILITY OF NURSING PROFESSIONALS: WEANING
Accountability of Nursing Professionals: Weaning from Mechanical Ventilation
Samantha Madrid
Grand Canyon University
Abstract
This paper will discuss the weaning of patients off of a mechanical ventilator. It will look at the
problems associated with prolonged intubation vs. premature extubation, and what healthcare
professionals can do to assess a patients readiness to begin the weaning process. A patient care
scenario will be given and an explanation of how nursing practice can evolve with the knowledge
from this study will be shown. The accountability of the nursing professional in regards to mechanical
ventilation will be visited as well.
Accountability of Nursing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The nurse should assume responsibility and accountability for their patient s health. This requires the
nurse to research ways to assist a patient off ventilation, collaborate with physicians, and be aware of
the patient s condition and readiness to wean.
For some investigators, weaning success is defined as sustained spontaneous, unassisted breathing
with or without an artificial airway, and for others it is defined as sustained extubation (Cook 2000).
Whatever the nurse and physician see as the definition to weaning is far less important than ensuring
their patient is weaned at the correct time. Allowing a patient to remain intubated and on mechanical
ventilation when it is no longer needed, only puts the patient at risk for problems beyond the reason
for initial intubation.
Nurses should frequently monitor signs of a patient that is able to take spontaneous breaths. Assessing
levels of anxiety and diaphoresis along with frequent monitoring of vital signs can signal to the nurse
that the patient may no longer need the amount of assistance he is currently receiving. The nurse may
begin to wean the patient by decreasing the amount in mechanical support, in a slow and gradual
manner.
The study shows the decrease in mechanical support can be effected by increasing periods of
unassisted breathing, alternating unassisted breaths with mechanical breaths, and reduction of the
support delivered

Effects Of Eyewitness Testimony On The Us Criminal Justice...
Midterm Paper: The Effects of Eyewitness Testimony in the US Criminal Justice System On
December 14th, 1982, Marvin Anderson was sentenced to 210 years in prison for crimes that he did
not commit [1]. He was charged with rape, forcible sodomy, abduction, and robbery; these convictions
were largely due to the eyewitness testimony made against him at trial [2]. During the investigation, a
collection of photos was presented to the victim, where Anderson s photo was the only one in color.
Then, in a line up 30 minutes later, Anderson was the only one brought in whose image was shown to

which acted as very convincing evidence in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Despite knowing the unreliability of eyewitness testimonies, investigators still narrow in on suspects
identified by these witnesses. To explain the effects of eyewitness testimony one can examine a few
conditional probabilities:
Prob(Police investigate all leads/Eyewitness testimony) Prob(Police investigate all leads/No
eyewitness testimony)
Prob(Correct person convicted/Police investigate all leads) Prob(Correct person convicted/Police do
not investigate all leads)
Thus depending on specific numerical probabilities, it follows that:
Prob(Correct person convicted/Eyewitness testimony) Prob(Correct person convicted/No eyewitness
testimony)
Of course, eyewitness testimonies are not always unreliable and often can be crucial in correctly
identifying the perpetrator of the crime, thus these premises and conclusion are not to be taken at face
value, but as a way to conceptualize bad bias from eyewitness testimony. Mistaken eyewitness
testimony causes a large amount of bad bias by shifting focus onto one specific defendant. With all the
focus on one defendant, many cognitive biases come into play, such as confirmation bias and belief
perseverance. If a witness passionately claims that someone committed the crime, investigators are
likely to mold evidence to fit the case against that defendant, instead of identifying an alternative
suspect who

Extracellular Loop
The extracellular loops of GPCRs are important for receptor function. They contribute to protein
folding, provide structure to the extracellular region and mediate movement of the TM helices on
activation. The second extracellular loop (ECL2) is of significance for ligand binding and receptor
activation. In family B (or secretin like) GPCRs, it is the most conserved and often the longest of all
the ECLs, and so is in a good position to interact with the endogenous peptide agonists for these
receptors and is in a prominent central position to mediate conformational changes 17. Mutations
within ECL2 have been shown to affect GLP 1 binding and efficiency, indicating an important role in
GLP 1R activation. Interestingly, some mutations ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The structural features of ECL2 and high lipophilicity of TAK 875 (which shows approximately 380
fold preference for lipophilic phase over aqueous phase) suggest that TAK 875 most probably enters
the binding pocket of hGPR40 through the lipid bilayer14. Looking at Figure 3, the crystal structure of
FFA1 provides a good starting point for understanding ligand docking which predicts the preferred
orientation of one molecule to a second molecule when bound to each other to form a stable complex.
Although docking of flexible Linoleic acid which is a natural ligand is the least reliable, it helps to
generate hypotheses as to how agonistic activity of Linoleic acid could be amplified by synthetic
agonists, like TAK 875, at a structural level. For example, targeting Arginines, which are α amino

If Savannah Wilson has truly been abused by her step father, then she can only benefit from the
outcome of the CPS investigate if CPS is allowed to do its job. The legal demands on the school are
reasonable. Emotionally, the demands on school staff are great. It is regrettable that CPS is
understaffed and inefficient. However, this agency must be allowed to conduct its own investigate
once the school has filed a report of suspected child abuse. Legally the school benefits by delegating
responsibility to CPS to investigate the incident in question. Ethically, the school employees should

Cosmopolitan is a women s magazine for fashion, sex advice, dating tips and celebrity news. This
magazine has been around since 1886, but it had a totally different concept, until 1965. When it was
first launched in 1886 by Paul Schlicht, it was considered a family magazine. It wasn t until 1965
when a woman by the name of Helen Brown took over the magazine in seeking somewhere women
could go to get advice on various topics. Now the magazine is being run by Kate White, Editor in
Chief. Because Cosmo contains explicit information that is not advised to people under eighteen, its

The For The Short Term
For the Short term (now): I think first what is need to be done is to provide easy information about all
the features of the sites. Because there are still many users who don t know fully about this site and its
features. They should avoid doing too much changes in the site because if the university will do too
many changes in their sites then it will be rally hard for the client to do work on it. I can recommend
that they should also ask the client that what kind of changes they want in the sites because it the
client who is going to use it. If clients are facing problem in the site like to find some option which is
hard for them to search then the university should work on it and make changes according to users.
For the Mid term (next 12 month) CSU can show everyone that they are the most green and carbon
free university of the world by reducing more and more paper and putting everything online. CSU can
make changes according to the demand of the user and make it a simple and more useful website.

Midlife Crisis in William Shakespeare s Sonnet 138 Essay
Midlife Crisis in William Shakespeare s Sonnet 138
William Shakespeare s Sonnet 138 presents an aging man s rationalization for deceit in an affair with a
younger woman. The speaker of the sonnet realizes his mistress lies to him about being faithful. He in
turn, portrays himself as younger than he actually is: When my love swears that she is made of truth / I
do believe her though I know she lies, / That she might think me some untutored youth... (1 3). Sonnet
138 allows the reader a glimpse into the speaker s mind, and what one finds is a man suffering from
what is commonly known as a midlife crisis. In an effort to reverse the downslope [sic] of age
(Kermode Millions ), he takes part in a duplicitous affair with a ... Show more content on

In the last quatrain of Sonnet 138, the speaker questions why the lies are necessary to perpetuate the
affair (9 10), then makes lame excuses for the deceptions (Levin Shakespeare s ). The couplet
concludes the sonnet by the speaker resigning himself to the situation (13 4).
If fear of aging is the underlying cause behind the affair and lust is the motive, dishonesty is the
means. The speaker s issues regarding dishonesty appear in all three parts of the sonnet. In the first
two quatrains, he makes it clear that honesty in his affair is utterly unimportant: When my love swears
that she is made of truth / I do believe her though I know she lies... (1 2). The speaker states matter of
factly that he knows his mistress is unfaithful to him, yet he chooses to believe her, at least outwardly.
Conversely, though, the use of the word swears in line one could mean, according to Seamus Cooney,
that the speaker questioned his mistress about her fidelity ( Shakespeare ). In lines three through six,
as mentioned above, the speaker also feels no qualms about trying to deceive his mistress regarding
his age. To prove that honesty is not a virtue in the first two quatrains, the speaker even comments on
how his mistress tries to fool him by going along with his deception, and he confesses to pretending
not to notice when she tries to fool him! According to Moore, the deceit present is so cynical [and] self
conscious ... that

The Use Of Companionship In John Steinbeck s Of Mice And Men
In the novel of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck uses multiple characters to show how companionship is
valuable in rough times. The author places the setting during the Dust Bowl and Great Depression.
The Dust Bowl was a time of intense hardship and caused many people to lose hope. In the book,
George and Lennie are ranch hands. They have been through, and taken care of each other in the
rough times throughout the dustbowl. Steinbeck uses multiple unique characters to prove that people
should learn how much companionship is valuable in rough times. Steinbeck uses Lennie prove that
companionship is valuable in rough times by showing how George helps Lennie. Lennie and all of the
other special needs or disabled people in this time are discriminated, looked down upon, and used as
lab rats. Since Lennie did have some sort of syndrome, but it wasn t as bad as some others, people

was little, it was a great sheepherder. But as it has gotten older, it has lost its productiveness on the
ranch because it has Got no teeth, he s all stiff with rheumatism (Steinbeck 22). Even though the dog
isn t helpful at all, Candy keeps it with him. He keeps the dog even when it has lost its purpose
because the dog keeps Candy company. The dog is a symbol to keep pushing through for candy
because even with all the disabilities of the dog, it is still living, and when Candy sees that, it reminds
him that he should always keep pushing through with his dog, soulmate, and companion. People
should value companionship in rough times by how Steinbeck showed how Candy kept his dog just
for his own comfort to help him through tough times. This is very helpful to learn today because with
someone you can always lean on, you know they will be right there for you no matter

Public Shame In Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter
Public shaming is not new. Shaming a person is a painful feeling of humiliation or distress caused by
the consciousness of wrong or foolish behavior. Public shame ruins a person s life over what they did
wrong by being called names, being fired from a job, receiving death threats, and being known for
what they did for the rest of their life. Public shame never goes away and is still used today to mock
people. Thus, public shame can ruin a person s life socially, mentally, and personally. In Source A,
Hester deals with being public shame by standing on a scaffold in front of the town, being mocked and
called names. She committed adultery with Dimmesdale when her husband was away, the town did
not know who Hester did it with and make her the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

threats and so was her family and friends. When she landed, she deleted her entire social media
account. This includes, her Instagram, Facebook and Twitter and she was fired from her job within
hours of this tweet. This also happened to Monica Lewinski when she was working with the President,
Bill Clinton. She did some inappropriate acts with him and it spread to the public. The people were
sending her threats. She was fired from her job. She was publicly silent for a decade because of what
people posted about her on social media which made her disconnect with the world and afraid to show
her face in public. She was also harassed on and off the internet of what she did with Bill Clinton.
Justine Sacco and Monica Lewinski went into hiding to escape the public eye. They both lost their

Bruce Knauft and The Gebusi Religion
As anthropologist Bruce Knauft described, the Gebusi clan had words that described many different
aspects, examples included oil the Gebusi word for tomorrow and yesterday and owa for grandparents
and grandchildren, but the most defining one was kogwayay, a catchfall marker to describe all of their
cultural distinction. Because of kogwayay s branching terminology, kogwayay is also the Gebusi s
word for ethnicity, the identification with a cultural group because of shared values customs and
beliefs, while inversely excluded from different groups. One aspect that contributes to the Gebusi s
sense of kogwayay is religion. Through Knauft s book we see their religious ways introduced and
watch them change and adapt with the dynamics of cultural change over time. As defined above,
ethnicity is the shared customs, values and beliefs that the cultural group shares that set them apart
from other groups. The religion described within Knauft s research is applicable to majority of those
elements, making it a vital part of kogwayay. One of the Gebusi s traditions is presented in the suicide
description of chapter three. Dugawe, one of the men of tribe, was found after hanging himself, and in
Gebusi tradition the women massage the body and cover themselves in the bodily fluids oozing from
the decomposing body. While ethnocentrism may come out in a majority of people, this is part of the
Gebusi beliefs and customs that set them apart from certain groups and bring individuals together.

People are travelling further and more frequently for a various causes like holidays, business, and
education. Tourism plays a vital role in Australian economy. Foreign household incomes, the cost of
travel and the comparative price of tourism in Australia with other places, are the important factors
which influences demand for international tourism.(Pc.gov.au, 2016)
Demand for the international tourism in Australia has grown strongly over the past two decades. The
number of international visitors has increased from 2.5 million in 1992 to almost 6.7 million in 2014,
which is more than doubled. (Pc.gov.au, 2016)
Tourism industry is set to be a major focus for economic growth, as the country is facing the continued
economic downturn in the mining industry. (Young and Winter, 2014). It contributes higher than the
agricultural sector in Australian GDP. Tourism spending contributed almost 3 per cent of Australia s
GDP, one third of which was by international visitors, in 2014.
In 2013/14, tourism denoted 2.7%, or 43.4 billion of Australian GDP. It also employed 4.6% of all
employed Australians around 500,000 people. (Scutt, 2015). In 2013, tourist spending in the tourism
industry exceeded $98.5 billion. (Young and Winter, 2014).
Tourists from Asia, specifically from China and India are the main growth area for Australian tourists
exports. In 2014/15, the number of temporary arrivals from China to Australia increased to 935k from
770k in 2013/14. (Scutt, 2015)

  • 2. Socrates Vs Emerson In their work of explaining and utilizing self reliance, Socrates and Emerson similarly reference this idea and how standing up for one s own beliefs will impact others. Socrates charges brought upon him by accusers such as Meletus and Anytus are punishable by death. Though he may lose his life, he refuses to surrender his original ideas and defends philosophy without changing his views even with the impending death sentence. In the same way, Emerson s theme of self reliance dictates that everyone should use it to combat conformity. I ve always been taught that believing in yourself is key. Although many people allege that they rely on themselves, I claim that Socrates and Emerson s beliefs about self reliance are significant because believing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Emerson, people need to Insist on yourself; never imitate (Emerson 18). Anyone familiar with the saying be yourself can appreciate this idea. He further explains his method of self reliance and how it will be beneficial in the long run. People should be self reliant and pursue their ideas. Emerson is correct in implying that no one should ever back down or succumb to imitation which could lead to more mindless thinking. Relying solely on yourself can present better opportunities than carelessly repeated nonsense. This is one of the reasons that teachers say not to cheat on tests. They explain that there is no use in trying to copy off of your partner s work because they could be wrong, but people still do it. Therefore, these cheaters will never learn to think or figure things out on their own. In life, the most successful people are the ones who are resilient and self sufficient instead of selfish and easily discouraged. Socrates also brought up imitation when he talked of young people imitating him, but they did not understand him. • 3. Social Penetration Theory Founder of the theory The founders of the theory were Irwin Altman and Dalmas Taylor. Altman is a distinguished professor of psychology at the University of Utah whereby Taylor is a professor of psychology at the University of Texas, Arlington. Altman and Taylor developed this theory to provide an understanding of the closeness between two individuals. Apparently, social penetration is defined as a process that moves a relationship from non intimate to intimate. The theory states that this process occurs primarily through self disclosure and it is guided by the assumptions that relationship development is systematic and predictable and it is also include deterioration or growing apart. This theory also claims that people s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The decision to disclose is based on the perceived rewards the person will gain if he or she discloses information. If a person perceives that the cause of disclosing information is greater that the rewards for disclosing information than no information will be disclosed. The larger the reward cost ratio the more disclosure takes place. If you think to the relationships you have been in you will probably find that in almost all of them more disclosure took place at the out sets of the relationship than at any other place. That happens because people initially disclose superficial information that costs very little if another person finds it out. Future Development of The Theory To understand the proximity relationship between two people, Irwin Altman and Dalmas Taylor (1973) conceptualized a theory called Social Penetration. Both made extensive studies in an area of social ties on various types of couples. Their theory describes a pattern of relationship development, a process which they identify as social penetration. Social penetration refers to a bonding process in which a relationship of individuals to move from superficial communication toward a more intimate communication. The relationship is regular and predictable in its development. This is because the relationship is something important and ...already exists in the heart of our humanity (Rogers and Escudero, 2004). • 4. New Public Management Model For The Nonprofit Agency,... New Public Management and the Role of Nonprofit Organizations: Cultivating the Public Sector The purpose of this paper is to apply the new public management model to the nonprofit agency, Hands Across the World. First, an overview of the new public management model is provided. Second, a brief description of the nonprofit organization, Hands Across the World is provided. Third, the new public management model is applied to Hands Across the World. New Public Management Today the new public management (NPM) model is the leading worldview in the public sector. The political climate and ideology during the 1970s and 1980s served as an impetus to migrate away from the old public administration approach and implement new policies and procedures that would be of better service to the public interest and collective good as well as restore trust and value in the bureaucratic process. Thus, during the mid 1990s, the new public management worldview was realized to apply common practices used in the private sector to the public sector. The goal of this approach was to achieve the same level of efficiency found in the private sector and remove some of the redundancy, lack of transparency, and lack of accountability in bureaucratic government to better serve the public interest. David Osborne and Ted Gaebler s Reinventing Government (1992) served as a catalytic novel in the progression of implementing private practices in the public sector. Under the NPM framework public administrators ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Guideline For The Treatment Of Early And Established RA Treatment of Early and Established RA How treatment for early and established RA differs based on current and evidence based practice? According to the 2015 Guideline for the treatment of RA developed by the ACR, the approach to treat early and established RA is different. The treatment recommendations by the ACR for early and established RA are as follows: Early RA: The early RA is defined as RA with duration of disease/symptoms of 6 months (Singh et al., 2016, p.4) and duration does not represent the time since RA diagnosis, but the length of time the patient has had symptoms. The treatment of the early RA begins with DMARDs i.e. methotrexate as monotherapy along with short term glucocorticoids ( 3 months for RA disease ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The treatment of the established RA begins with DMARDs i.e. methotrexate as monotherapy along with short term glucocorticoids ( 3 months for RA disease flares). However, if the symptoms persist on methotrexate a combination therapy or single therapy with biologic DMARDs can be started. The combination therapy includes two/more nonbiologic DMARDs alone or methotrexate with biologic DMARDs. The low dose glucocorticoids (10 mg/day of prednisone) for short term can be used during combination therapy. If the single biologics or combination therapy fails, the steps shown in the flowchart (see figure 5) should be followed to treat established RA. Figure 5: 2015 ACR recommendations for the treatment of established RA Indication: * = consider adding low dose glucocorticoids (10 mg/day of prednisone or equivalent) in patients with moderate or high RA disease activity when starting traditional disease modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and in patients with DMARD failure or biologic failure. † = also consider using short term glucocorticoids (defined as 3 months treatment) for RA disease flares. Glucocorticoids should be used at the lowest possible dose and for the shortest possible duration to provide the best benefit risk ratio for the patient. # = treatment target should ideally be low disease activity or remission. ** = tapering denotes scaling back therapy (reducing dose or dosing frequency), not discontinuing it and if done, must be ... • 6. Comprehensive Preparation For A Complete Life Comprehensive Preparation for a Complete Life Teen pregnancy has been a serious social issue for quite a while. Often, a teen pregnancy is detrimental for both the teen and the child involved. Both a teen mother and her child are more susceptible to complications during the pregnancy and birth than and adult mother and her child. Unfortunately, a teen mother and her infant are also less likely to pursue and receive healthcare to alleviate these health risks (Teen Pregnancy). Moreover, teen pregnancy is often cited as a factor that perpetuates the cycle of poverty, since teen mothers are likely to be poor in the first place, and their children are likely to grow up to be poor (Teen Pregnancy). While there is no argument that teens should be educated to prevent teen pregnancy, there is a debate on how it should be done. Currently, there are two forms of education focused on reducing teen pregnancies: abstinence only education and comprehensive sex education with birth control. However, sex education and birth control are clearly the superior option, due to its effectiveness and the futility of abstinence only education. Comprehensive sex education with an emphasis on birth control is a much more effective educational tool to prevent teen pregnancy than abstinence only education. Fortunately, teen pregnancy rates have fallen dramatically in the past 20 years. In 2002, the rate of pregnancy was 75.4 for every 1,000 women between the ages of 15 and 19, from 116.9 in 1990 (Teen ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Workforce Is Growing Older As The Population Ages The workforce is growing older as the population ages. The elderly in this generation are living significantly longer. The amount of older workers is increasing due to the baby boomer generation. The number of older workers over 55 is projected to grow at nearly four times the rate of the overall labor force (Shultz, pg.7) Many older workers are choosing to stay in the workforce. An increasing amount of older workers are choosing to prolong retirement. Population aging will significantly increase the amount of older workers. Between 1977 and 2007, employment of workers 65 and over increased 101 percent, compared to a much smaller increase of 59 percent for total employment (16 and over). The number of employed men 65 and over rose 75 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The number of workers between the ages of 65 and 74 and those aged 75 and up are predicted to soar by more than 80 percent. By 2016, workers age 65 and over are expected to account for 6.1 percent of the total labor force, up sharply from their 2006 share of 3.6 percent (U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2008). The majority of older adults remain in the workforce due to the economic downturn and not being able to afford retirement. Older adults continue to work in order to gain financial stability. Many workers age 65 and older are unprepared for retirement. Older workers are working longer due to the decrease in financial assets, low interest rates, shift to 401(k) s, higher social security retirement age, and longevity. There has been a significant decrease in the value of retirement assets. With the shift away from defined benefit and towards defined contribution pensions like 401(k)s, changes in financial markets have a more direct effect on many workers retirement savings (Orszag, 2009). Financial assets have lost value because of the financial crisis. Many older adults lost a large amount of their financial assets because they withdrew funds from their financial accounts in order to survive the financial crisis. Some 62 percent of people between ages 45 and 60 experienced at least a 20 percent decline in the value of their financial assets since the beginning of the crisis, compared with only 42 percent in 2010, according to the Conference Board ... • 8. Critical Analysis Of Forrest Gump Its hero, played by Tom Hanks, is a thoroughly decent man with an IQ of 75, who manages between the 1950s and the 1980s to become involved in every major event in American history. And he survives them all with only honesty and kindness as his shields. And yet this is not a heartwarming story about a mentally retarded man. That cubbyhole is much too small and limiting for Forrest Gump. The movie is more of a meditation on our times, as seen through the eyes of a man who lacks cynicism and takes things for exactly what they are. Watch him carefully and you will understand why some people are criticized for being too clever by half. Forrest is clever by just exactly enough. Tom Hanks may be the only actor who could have played the role. I can t think of anyone else as Gump, after seeing how Hanks makes him into a person so dignified, So straight ahead. The performance is a breathtaking balancing act between comedy and sadness, in a story rich in big laughs and quiet truths. Forrest is born to an Alabama boardinghouse Owner (Sally Field) who tries to correct his posture by making him wear braces, but who never criticizes his mind. When Forrest is called stupid, his mother tells him, Stupid is as stupid does, and Forrest turns out to be incapable of doing anything less than profound. Also, when the braces finally fall from his legs, it turns out he can run like the wind. That s how he gets a college football scholarship, in a life story that eventually becomes ... Shichtman writes that throughout the Middle Ages both churchmen as well as secular writers were attempting to come to terms with a conception of time and history still undergoing revision. This Tapestry tries to grapple with recording history in the Middle Ages, as it details the Story of William the Conqueror defeating Harold the Earl of Wessex at the Battle of Hastings. While the Tapestry depicts numerous men, who participated in this historical event, the artist only include six women in the Tapestry. Women lived as equal members in society if they worked or had land. These charters provided women with wider aspirations in an otherwise male dominated society. The Doomsday Book recorded that three hundred and fifty women held land in the time of Edward the Confessor. Henrietta Leyster records how a Yorkshire woman named Asa held her land separate and free from the lordship and power of Bjornulfr her husband, even when they were together, so that he could neither give it, nor sell it, nor forfeit it. After their separation, she withdrew from her land and possessed it as a lady. In order for a woman to keep her privileges, she must first have land. • 11. The Invention Of Artificial Intelligence The idea that machines and technology can, and are, becoming intelligent is a scary thought. Throughout the history of technology, there has been a steady increase in the capabilities of software, and much research has gone into how these capabilities can be used to better our lives. In our lives today, we all use some form of Artificial Intelligence daily. Some of these activities include: using cellular apps (Google Maps, Siri, Cortana), playing video games, and listening to music. Although the use of Artificial Intelligence has made human life more efficient and effective, it has also insinuated reliance and unsuspecting ignorance into our minds as well, and we do not even see it coming. The history of Artificial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The mission statement that was developed during the conference stated, Every aspect of learning or other feature of intelligence can, in principle, be so precisely described that a machine can be made to simulate it. As a result of the Dartmouth summer research project, The General Problem Solver was born. Created by Herbert Simon, J.C. Shaw, and Allen Newell, the general problem solver originated as a theory of human program, specifically a program that stimulates human thought . The basis of the general problem solver was to use general logic and algorithms to solve common sense problems. Initially, it could only be used in well defined problems, basically proving theorems that had already been created. Although with the introduction of the personal computer in the 1980s and the evolution of smart devices, Artificial intelligence has become practically a daily necessity in our lives today. By the current year 2017, Artificial Intelligence has grown much larger than simply The General Problem Solver. Technologists now differentiate between AI and ML (Machine Learning) when considering intelligence. While artificial intelligence is the broader way of describing a machine being able to complete a task using human input, machine learning is specifically a division of artificial intelligence in which computers can self learn without the need for human programming. Watching films has become one of the most popular activities to do. Although plenty of people know of Charlie Chaplin, most do not know any real information about him. Charlie Chaplin has been a major contributor to America s advancement in the film industry from his innovative beginnings, and perseverance to improve and succeed, to his overall achievements in history. Charlie Chaplin was born in South London on April 16, 1889. He was the first child of Hannah and Charles Chaplin. Charles was vaudeville actor. Hannah was a vaudeville singer. Charlie s father was a drunk and he later left his family when he was three years old when he found out his wife had an affair with another actor, Leo Dryden. They soon had a child named George, who left to live with his father. Since Hannah was now a single mother, she was struggling to find a way to provide for her children. She had another son that was older than Charlie, from a previous relationship (Schwartz). Hannah s singing alone was not enough to earn her the money to care for two boys. She took up sweatshop work on a sewing machine she rented to earn extra income. However, when one delves into the history of the order and looks at the factors that differentiated it from other similar monastic institutions of the same period one begins to see a number of portentous factors that undoubtedly contributed to such explosive growth. Nature and the conduct of life are two central themes that are often weaved together in his essays and books that were published in the Romantic era of literature. Thoreau brought these two themes together to write on how people ought to live a simplistic life. His naturalistic writing intertwined cataloging and observation with Transcendentalist views of nature. Even in the new Testament in Ephesians 5:18 drunkenness in wine is shown as opposite force to the holy Spirit: 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, This does not mean that wine should not be drunk by Christians, rather I want to argue that wine here is the major image of the entertainment and rather short and unstable joy of this world. What they can do with various situations will totally depend on their style of management. A management style is an overall method of leadership used by a manager (Lessem et al, 1999). From the dialogue, it can be argued that the philosopher is a mortal enemy of rhetoric. He condemns it on ethical and epistemic grounds. Socrates argues that rhetoric is not a real knowledge because it is not a legitimate art, and that the teachers of rhetoric are nothing but fraudsters. In addition, he asserts that rhetoric is ethically bankrupt and its main objective is to gratify the ignorant and enhance its experts power to practice it. It tends to manipulate ignorant individuals into believing on imaginative things. Therefore, Socrates argues that it is not real art, because a real art should depict a purified rationalism and knowledge that maintains the changeless good. The bacterial cells in biofilms exchange nutrients and metabolites by means of water channels between the micro colonies (Kokare et al., 2009). The microbes living deep within natural biofilms may often receive low nutrition due to restricted rates of diffusion of nutrients through the biofilm (Petroff et al., 2011). Biofilms are also known to provide a suitable environment for syntrophic relationships between the two metabolically distinct bacteria for the exchange of substrates/nutrients (Kokare et al., 2009). CliffNotes, archives The book is written as if it were a novel, complete with dialog, and is what Truman Capote referred to as New Journalism the nonfiction novel. In Cold Blood was first published in four parts of The New Yorker. Capote then released the novel in 1965, after six years of hard work and dedication to the novel. The experience took a huge toll on him, physically and mentally. A few years after the novel was published, he started to pop pills and go downhill. Though this novel was a bestseller, everything comes with a cost. Capote used suspense to tie the novel together and to leave everyone wondering what would be in the next chapter. He portrayed Dick and Perry as point blank serial killers. The way he had explained each death of the people in the Clutter s family was horrific. In Cold Blood was the best and worst thing to ever happen to Capote. Throughout America many murders are committed every single day. Many studies showed the ability of VSP based emission models to reflect the transient emission rates under different operating modes as well as the better estimation of vehicle emissions than speed based emission models (Song et al., 2013). Scora et al. (2011) combined real time traffic data along with the comprehensive modal emission models (CMEM and MOVES) to estimate the environmental measures in real time. The estimation methodology based on OpMode bin provided far more dynamic and accurate environmental information compared to static emission inventory estimation models. (2013) developed a practical model evaluate the environmental effectiveness of ITS strategies by using data from PEMS. The models are developed through considering the influence of the vehicle s operating mode (VSP distribution) on vehicle emissions, which not only guarantees the accuracy of emissions and fuel consumption models, but also makes it possible to accumulate current traffic information systems in Beijing. Wang et al. (2008) established a model based on VSP and speed, which provided insight that how different levels of cruise speed and acceleration affect vehicle fuel consumption. The model prediction shows that vehicle fuel consumption per unit distance is optimum at speeds between 50 and 70 km/h which is similar to the observed data from PEMS. This is evident in the literature that in order to improve both the applicability and accuracy of the existing emission models instantaneous vehicle activity data are needed which can be collected from the on board emission system like PEMS to consider all real conditions which might induce the modeling errors and improve the model precisions. In summary, the microscopic simulation modeling has provided an accurate and reliable representation of vehicular operations in roadway networks so far in the literature. From the literature we also found that, most of the vehicle emissions data used in modeling are collected in a controlled laboratory environment or simulation based. With ... • 34. The And Of The Forest In investigation 1, the data points are very clustered from the height of 150cm to the height of 300cm. This makes sense as saplings are defined as young trees that are taller than 1.35m above the forest floor. So between 150cm and 300cm is most likely average height which would be the majority of the population. The overall data set of investigation 1 is alot more spread out than the compact data set of investigation 2. On the other hand, in investigation 2 all the data points are overlapping and in line with the regression line, up to a height of 600cm where there is few data points, indicating that the majority of saplings taken in this sample are young and planted for regeneration of the forest purposes. In both cases there is a positive relationship between the two sets of variables. In investigation one, as H of a sapling increases, the DBH tends to increase. This would make sense because as the sapling grows up, it subsequently grows in diameter because it manufactures new cells around its circumference which increase the diameter at breast height in order to maintain and support the weight of the growing height. On the graph there appears to be some unusal feature s where the height of the Sapling is approx 450cm however the DBH of just below 10cm is alot lower than the other saplings of the sample population that have a height of 450cm. It is possible that some sapling trees, like this one, are alot thinner and taller. This could be caused by a mutation. However ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It will look at the problems associated with prolonged intubation vs. premature extubation, and what healthcare professionals can do to assess a patients readiness to begin the weaning process. A patient care scenario will be given and an explanation of how nursing practice can evolve with the knowledge from this study will be shown. The accountability of the nursing professional in regards to mechanical ventilation will be visited as well. Accountability of Nursing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The nurse should assume responsibility and accountability for their patient s health. This requires the nurse to research ways to assist a patient off ventilation, collaborate with physicians, and be aware of the patient s condition and readiness to wean. For some investigators, weaning success is defined as sustained spontaneous, unassisted breathing with or without an artificial airway, and for others it is defined as sustained extubation (Cook 2000). Whatever the nurse and physician see as the definition to weaning is far less important than ensuring their patient is weaned at the correct time. Allowing a patient to remain intubated and on mechanical ventilation when it is no longer needed, only puts the patient at risk for problems beyond the reason for initial intubation. Nurses should frequently monitor signs of a patient that is able to take spontaneous breaths. Assessing levels of anxiety and diaphoresis along with frequent monitoring of vital signs can signal to the nurse that the patient may no longer need the amount of assistance he is currently receiving. The nurse may begin to wean the patient by decreasing the amount in mechanical support, in a slow and gradual manner. The study shows the decrease in mechanical support can be effected by increasing periods of unassisted breathing, alternating unassisted breaths with mechanical breaths, and reduction of the support delivered ... Midterm Paper: The Effects of Eyewitness Testimony in the US Criminal Justice System On December 14th, 1982, Marvin Anderson was sentenced to 210 years in prison for crimes that he did not commit [1]. He was charged with rape, forcible sodomy, abduction, and robbery; these convictions were largely due to the eyewitness testimony made against him at trial [2]. During the investigation, a collection of photos was presented to the victim, where Anderson s photo was the only one in color. Despite knowing the unreliability of eyewitness testimonies, investigators still narrow in on suspects identified by these witnesses. To explain the effects of eyewitness testimony one can examine a few conditional probabilities: Prob(Police investigate all leads/Eyewitness testimony) Prob(Police investigate all leads/No eyewitness testimony) Prob(Correct person convicted/Police investigate all leads) Prob(Correct person convicted/Police do not investigate all leads) Thus depending on specific numerical probabilities, it follows that: Prob(Correct person convicted/Eyewitness testimony) Prob(Correct person convicted/No eyewitness testimony) Of course, eyewitness testimonies are not always unreliable and often can be crucial in correctly identifying the perpetrator of the crime, thus these premises and conclusion are not to be taken at face value, but as a way to conceptualize bad bias from eyewitness testimony. Mistaken eyewitness testimony causes a large amount of bad bias by shifting focus onto one specific defendant. With all the focus on one defendant, many cognitive biases come into play, such as confirmation bias and belief perseverance. They contribute to protein folding, provide structure to the extracellular region and mediate movement of the TM helices on activation. The second extracellular loop (ECL2) is of significance for ligand binding and receptor activation. In family B (or secretin like) GPCRs, it is the most conserved and often the longest of all the ECLs, and so is in a good position to interact with the endogenous peptide agonists for these receptors and is in a prominent central position to mediate conformational changes 17. The structural features of ECL2 and high lipophilicity of TAK 875 (which shows approximately 380 fold preference for lipophilic phase over aqueous phase) suggest that TAK 875 most probably enters the binding pocket of hGPR40 through the lipid bilayer14. Looking at Figure 3, the crystal structure of FFA1 provides a good starting point for understanding ligand docking which predicts the preferred orientation of one molecule to a second molecule when bound to each other to form a stable complex. Although docking of flexible Linoleic acid which is a natural ligand is the least reliable, it helps to generate hypotheses as to how agonistic activity of Linoleic acid could be amplified by synthetic agonists, like TAK 875, at a structural level. For example, targeting Arginines, which are α amino acids that are used in the biosynthesis of proteins, from the extracellular side by substituting existing water mediated contacts could still leave a possibility of targeting the Arginines from the side involved in interactions with amino acids Tyrosines. The fact that the ligands could have different binding modes and occupy different binding sites at FFA1 can be also seen from a site map search (Schrodinger, LLC, New York, NY, USA 2014b) (Fig. 3, E)11. The couplet concludes the sonnet by the speaker resigning himself to the situation (13 4). If fear of aging is the underlying cause behind the affair and lust is the motive, dishonesty is the means. The speaker s issues regarding dishonesty appear in all three parts of the sonnet. In the first two quatrains, he makes it clear that honesty in his affair is utterly unimportant: When my love swears that she is made of truth / I do believe her though I know she lies... (1 2). The speaker states matter of factly that he knows his mistress is unfaithful to him, yet he chooses to believe her, at least outwardly. Conversely, though, the use of the word swears in line one could mean, according to Seamus Cooney, that the speaker questioned his mistress about her fidelity ( Shakespeare ). In lines three through six, as mentioned above, the speaker also feels no qualms about trying to deceive his mistress regarding his age. To prove that honesty is not a virtue in the first two quatrains, the speaker even comments on how his mistress tries to fool him by going along with his deception, and he confesses to pretending not to notice when she tries to fool him! Because of kogwayay s branching terminology, kogwayay is also the Gebusi s word for ethnicity, the identification with a cultural group because of shared values customs and beliefs, while inversely excluded from different groups. One aspect that contributes to the Gebusi s sense of kogwayay is religion. Through Knauft s book we see their religious ways introduced and watch them change and adapt with the dynamics of cultural change over time. As defined above, ethnicity is the shared customs, values and beliefs that the cultural group shares that set them apart from other groups.
