The first Saxon Cathedral was built of wood, probably by Mellitus
in 604AD. It was burned down in 675.
The cathedral was rebuilt in Stone in 685. It was sacked by
Vikings in 961 Ad.

The fourth St Paul’s
known as Old St
Paul's was begun by

8. The ‘New work’ was finished in 1314.
The spire was destroyed by lightning in 1561, which was not replaced
for a long while.
It was completely destroyed by the great fire of London in 1666. The
fire was so hot, it melted the cathedral bells.
The St Paul’s Cathedral , standing today is designed by Sir
Christopher Wren.

• Was in form of color, light and shade.
• It is said to be over ornamented, theatrical .
• Light was through lots of windows.
• Puttos made of wood was often used for
ornamentation.
• They used large scale ceiling frescos.
• Sculptures were also intricately ornamented.
• Their paintings were realistic.

The west façade is 180 ft. long , with the main entrance
and columned portico surmounted by an upper
colonnade a.
There is a statue of Saint Paul above the pediment and
two flanking statues of Saint Peter and Saint James.

The Dome is 111M high
and weighs 66,000 tons.
Its made of two domes.
The inner dome is
decorated with pictures of
Saint Paul.
Eight arches support the
dome. But the load is
carried through the
buttresses.
There is a large lantern on
top of the dome.

dome.

inner dome and is famous
for its acoustics.
The Stone gallery is son the
outer dome.
The Golden gallery is a
narrow one, which encircles
the base of the lantern.

The bells in the tower are rung on
Sunday and special occasions.
Great Paul is the biggest bell in
England. It rings everyday at 1PM
indicating lunch break.
Great Tom, The other bell, rings
only when a king or queen dies (a
peal of 12 bells).

The Cathedral has a library which houses more than 21,000
books and original manuscripts dating back to 1600’s.
They also have an architectural archive, which includes
archeological stones, paintings, and models.
