● Nelson Memo and Federal Year of Open Science have created a sense of urgency around
the transition to an open-by-default model, with ramifications for publishing, infrastructure,
incentives, assessment, & more
● Open science can be complicated (unclear guidance, training, support)
○ Implementation isn’t just about letter-of-the-[directive] compliance
○ Access, interoperability, and reuse can be unlocked at scale if done right
● Open scholarship solutions must encompass not just paper and data sharing, but also
workflows (and hardware, and software, and…)
● Incentives can make open science more rewarding (money and career) and more
rewarding (collegial and enjoyable)
● Good practices/exemplars/demonstrations are emerging rapidly
● Deliberation and care are required to effect an equitable transition to an open–by-default
