The Future of Personal Robotics - 2015 - Nicolas RigaudNicolas Rigaud
Slides of the talk I gave during the ICT Summit in Warsaw (Poland) on december 3rd 2014.
The goal is to introduce people to what we do at Aldebaran, to the philosophy behind our robots and our software, and to some use cases where robots are already making a difference.
Our society has been interacting with robots for decades; plus, science fiction novels have given them a growing place in popular culture. Consumer robot kits are becoming very popular in K-12 school programs, library makerspaces and other collaborative learning spaces, as well as in people’s homes. In this webinar:
• Define what a robot is and what they are capable of doing
• Understand the history of robots and robotics
• Describe the various types of robots
• Learn how to get started building your own robot
• Create a robotics league

Museum of Computing Newsletter May 2013Donald Jones
The document discusses an upcoming exhibition called "Robots Revealed" at the Museum of Computing that will run from July to January. The exhibition aims to showcase the progression of robotics from science fiction to modern applications. It will feature robots from the museum's collection and companies. Alongside the exhibition, there will be talks and learning activities to promote robotics and encourage future programmers. The museum is calling on supporters to participate in robot-themed events to mark the start of the exhibition in July.
The document traces the history and development of robots from early fictional depictions in the 1920s to modern advances. It discusses some of the first intelligent robots like Shakey in the 1960s, the first industrial robot Unimate in the 1950s-60s, and Honda's humanoid robot ASIMO in the 1980s-2000s. The key technologies driving more advanced modern robots are described as sensors, actuators, and artificial intelligence. The future of robots is discussed in terms of increasing autonomy through reinforcement learning and the challenges of human-robot interaction. Students are assigned short discussion topics on Shakey and developments in human-robot interaction.
This document is an introduction to the robot framework test automation framework presented on August 31, 2011. It discusses features of robot framework like being free, supporting multiple browsers, using a keyword-driven and data-driven tabular syntax, and generating HTML reports. It also mentions extending robot framework through libraries and an active user community for support.
The document discusses innovation and how it occurs. It argues that innovation happens at intersections and collisions, and is driven by a large, diverse set of explorers cheaply learning from each other. Virtual worlds help maximize innovation by allowing many solvers to explore problems and learn from each other at low cost, fostering a long tail of innovation. They also build trust through avatars and enable cultural collisions, mitigating tensions between idea generation and execution.

James Orapello discusses the importance of developing artificial intelligence (AI) safely to avoid potential harms. If not properly trained and regulated, AI could make autonomous decisions that endanger humans, such as a medical robot overriding treatment or a digital assistant canceling an important meeting. While current AI like Siri and Alexa still require human commands, they are collecting vast amounts of personal data. As AI continues advancing, strong oversight is needed to ensure it remains helpful rather than harmful to humanity. The document also provides a brief history of AI milestones like Deep Blue beating Kasparov at chess and the releases of Siri and Alexa. Experts like Elon Musk and Stephen Hawking have strongly warned about the risks of uncontrolled AI.
This presentation is designed to accompany Calder High's "Modern bridges, connectivity in the C21st" day on 1st July 2010.
The central question for the day is "Is the Internet a force for good", but I'll be focussing on one particular area - the ownership of content.
Nicola Strong presented on whether AI can compete with a human smile. The document discussed how robots like Pepper are being used in customer service and hospitality. A smile builds trust between humans and machines. Researchers are developing more emotive robots and virtual assistants with personalities. The future may see AI and robots smiling back at humans, but building trust will require more than just visual cues.
Fighting for the Future of the Social Web: Selling Out and Opening UpJoseph Smarr
Joseph Smarr gave this talk at O'Reilly's Open Source Conference (OSCON) in July 2011 on his experiences and predictions about working towards a user-centric, open social web.
The document discusses the future of personal robots and how technology is advancing to make them more affordable and programmable for individual use. Currently, companies produce robots like vacuums and floor washers, but future robots may understand natural language without complex programming. It presents a potential personal robot called ROMO that is controlled through a phone app and plugs into a robotic base. While challenges remain with artificial intelligence and natural language processing, the document suggests that intelligent robots may outnumber humans by 2100 and either help or replace humans in various tasks.
This document provides an overview of artificial intelligence (AI), including its history, applications, and future. It discusses early developments in AI research from the 1940s-1980s and a subsequent "AI winter". Current applications of AI discussed include expert systems, natural language processing, computer vision, robotics, and automatic programming. The future of AI is debated, with possibilities including more sophisticated AI assistants and robots, or potential issues if AI systems become too intelligent or fall into the wrong hands. The document concludes with examples of AI in daily life through personal assistants and video game AI.
This document provides an overview of artificial intelligence (AI), including its categories, applications, and future scope. It defines AI as the study and design of intelligent agents that can perceive their environment and take actions to maximize success. The document outlines three categories of AI: narrow AI, general AI, and super intelligence. It discusses current applications like expert systems, speech recognition, computer vision, game playing, and smart cars. The future scope section considers both positive and negative outcomes of advanced AI, such as AI pursuing aims that do not align with human values and creating free energy to benefit humanity. The conclusion is that AI has increased understanding of intelligence while also revealing its complexity.

5th LF Energy Power Grid Model Meet-up SlidesDanBrown980551
5th Power Grid Model Meet-up
It is with great pleasure that we extend to you an invitation to the 5th Power Grid Model Meet-up, scheduled for 6th June 2024. This event will adopt a hybrid format, allowing participants to join us either through an online Mircosoft Teams session or in person at TU/e located at Den Dolech 2, Eindhoven, Netherlands. The meet-up will be hosted by Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), a research university specializing in engineering science & technology.
Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.
What to expect
For the upcoming meetup we are organizing, we have an exciting lineup of activities planned:
-Insightful presentations covering two practical applications of the Power Grid Model.
-An update on the latest advancements in Power Grid -Model technology during the first and second quarters of 2024.
-An interactive brainstorming session to discuss and propose new feature requests.
-An opportunity to connect with fellow Power Grid Model enthusiasts and users.
