Dentists use arbitrary methods while determining the vertical dimension of occlusion and arranging the maxillary anterior teeth. Though there are many advances in techniques and materials employed in the field of prosthodontics for recording vertical dimension at occlusion; still, there is no accurate method for assessing vertical dimension of occlusion in edentulous patients and henceforth difficulty is faced by clinician during denture fabrication. Prosthodontists who do not make use of pre-extraction records and consider the natural findings of the patient while denture fabrication lack the scientific component in denture fabrication, translating into compromised patient‟s satisfaction. Every denture should be characterized according to existing state rather than performing a pearl like arrangement of artificial teeth. Pre-extraction records provide a useful guide while fabricating denture and it should be preferred over arbitrary methods which are commonly used. Therefore, pre-extraction records serve as a reliable tool during denture fabrication.

- 2. are common benign outgrowths of bone from the maxilla and mandible . in max. may project both inwards or outwards from the alveolar bone. or They typically also arise from the hard palate in the midline, in which case they are called tori palatini. in mand. , bony outgrowth located on the lingual side of the mandible, in the canine or premolar region, above the attachment of the mylohyoid muscle. In most cases, bilateral tori are present. You can be born with tori or develop it later in life max and mand tori

(b) The mucoperiosteal flaps are reflected to expose the bony mass. (c) A bur is used to divide the torus into small pieces. (d) A chisel is used to elevate the small fragments of bone from the hard palate. (e) The wound is debrided and the bone is smoothed with a bur, then sutures are placed to close the wound.
- 11. surgical removal of mandibular tori a) A lingual torus is covered by thin oral mucosa and considerable care is required to avoid accidental perforation of the flap. (b) The muco-periosteal flap is raised to expose the entire bony mass. (c) A surgical bur or chisel may be used to remove the bony torus. (d) The wound is closed with multiple resorbable sutures.
