why people tell themselves lies. These lies are called life lies a falsehood used to
rationalize the lifestyle people are living or actions they have committed. Tennessee
Williams and Henrik Ibsen investigate how life lies can turn into delusions a state of
mind or way of life when they are used to cope with the stresses of everyday life.
Williams protagonist, Blanche DuBois, was a former southern belle forced to move
in with her sister, Stella, after her husband s suicide and being evicted from Belle
Reve, her family home. To cope with these traumatic events, Blanche decided to
recreate her character. To do so, she lied to the people around about her sinful past
because she wanted to appear to them as the pure, southern belle she once was. As
the lies piled up, she came to believe them as truth, therefore, creating her delusion.
Blanche only came to further and more deeply believe her delusion as the play
progressed. On the other hand, Ibsen s protagonist, Nora, had been taken advantage
of her whole life. She was merely a pawn of the two most important men in her life:
her father and husband. Unlike Blanche, Nora s delusion was innate she was taught
these lies were the truth from birth, whereas Blanche consciously created her
delusions to protect her from past sins. Through a series of realizations, Nora came to
see the truth of the lieshe was living. Nora was a doll confined to the walls and ways
of Torvald, her husband s, doll house. Tennessee Williams, in A Streetcar Named
Desire, and Henrik Ibsen, in A Doll s House, employ life lies portrayed as delusions
as coping mechanisms; Ibsen explored how a new life and freedom can be gained
from a realization of one s delusion, while Williams explored how unwillingness to
accept a delusion can further trap and confine people.
Williams utilized the symbols of light and darkness to hide Blanche physically just
as she used lies to cover up and cope with her tainted past. Blanche avoided direct
exposure to light because she was afraid of exposing herself and, therefore, her past.

Some things can be done as well as others , the famous line of Sam Patch became a
well known saying amongst U.S. citizens especially Jeffersonian and Jacksonian
democrats (Johnson, 163). Sam Patch was many things in his lifetime from a famous
falls jumper to a destitute mill worker to also the first American born boss spinner.
He however was viewed different amongst social groups in America. The common

decay and immoralities of American society. Journalists during his time wrote
Sam Patch like many other great geniuses is a greater friend to the bottle than the
bottle is to him (Johnson, 115). The middle class viewed themselves as
respectables and the wage earning class was inferior to them, which is evident in
the celebration ceremonies in Paterson on the Fourth of July. Celebrations started
off with a parade, banquet, and fireworks where all Patersonians were welcome to
participate, but gradually transitioned to a more exclusive celebration of a large
group of respectable Young Men where toasts weren t based on patriotism anymore
yet based on entrepreneurial progress (Johnson, 65). Sam Patch s celebrity and life
not only showed growing social and political differences, but it showed the
increasing gap that was growing between the wage earning and middle class as a
result of the market revolution.
The wage earning class was the debtors, debtors who owed money and had to work
to make a living for creditors, most of whom made up what would be known as the
middle class. The tradition of fathers passing their land on down to their sons was

or words. Many people ask the question, Is hip hop dead? Others ask does it have
meaning? The lyrical style and meaning of hip hop music is very different from what
it was before. Many people compare old music such as tupac, bigge, and Eazy E to
new music and base new music off of them. They also compare old djs such as
Dr.Dre, Fatboy slim, and carl cox to new ones as well.
The relativity of word usage from the past to the present is very different in many
ways. For example, before any rap became rap hip hop had to be born. The
difference between hip hop and rap are very different. Hip hop is real feeling, real
emotion. It has a meaning in its words and it shows the listeners and hearers
(mostly African Americans) have a voice. The minorities need to have a voice and
with hip hop they can. Through beat or through lyrics. Now onto rap, with rap in
today s time is the next step. It doesn t really have a meaning, nowadays all people
rap about is guns, money, girls, sex, and power. There is either little or no meaning

Artemis Corruption Theme
The purpose of my poster is to persuade children aged 12 and over to read Artemis
Fowl by Eoin Colfer. The poster displays and expresses the theme of evil that is
evident in the graphic novel. I have used many techniques to convey the theme of evil
in the book.
Colour has been used in my poster to create a dark and wicked setting. The black
and red in the image of Artemis shows how he is capable of doing such evil. His
body is outlined with a red glow to enhance his power. I have also purposely made
his face dark and unidentified to show his mysterious and deceiving character. The
grey tones in the background express the darkness and mystery that is displayed in
the graphic novel. The heading is outlined with red to make the theme clear and
