3. “Leave a man without food for a week and you will see
life in him, leave him without WATER for a week and you cannot
feel his pulse”. Such is the importance of water . We have about
326 million cubic miles of water covering 70 percent of our
planet. There is in addition an untold amount of ground water
and water vapor in the atmosphere. For the last 6,000 years of
earth's history this same water supply has been recycling itself
an endless process of evaporation, condensation, and
precipitation. All along the way it services and nourishes every
form of plant and animal life. It unselfishly brings its blessings,
lingers until its job is done and then departs, many times
carrying a load of waste materials which it kindly delivers to
some other life form down the line as useful food.
5. As we in water-rich countries take our daily showers, water
the lawn or laze about in the pool, it's easy to forget that
fresh water is a life-or-death issue in many parts of the
world. Of a population of roughly 6.1 billion, more than 1
billion lack access to potable water. The World Health
Organization says that at any time, up to half of
humanity has one of the six main diseases -- diarrhea,
schistosomiasis, or trachoma, or infestation with ascaris,
guinea worm, or hookworm -- associated with poor
drinking water and inadequate sanitation. About 5 million
people die each year from poor drinking water, poor
sanitation, or a dirty home environment -- often resulting
from water shortage
7. A Rs 600-crore tanker industry is capitalising
on Chennai’s acute water scarcity. Over 13,000
tankers are mining the surrounding farmlands for
water. With agriculture in crisis and groundwater
levels insufficient for farming, farmers find it
easier to live off the money they earn from
private water operators
Severe water shortages are routine in Chennai
every summer. The average person knows he’s got
to sweat it out in the baking sun, waiting in an
endless queue for water.
The Tamil Nadu government has no answer; it is busy ‘stealing’
water from its farmers to quench the thirst of Chennai’s population
Water shortages are met by lifting water from neighbouring rural
areas.
Chennai Metrowater says the Upper Veeranam Project, meant to
bring drinking water to Chennai, will result in savings of Rs 500 crore
every year. Right now, however, water continues to be ‘stolen’ from
rural areas around Chennai, destroying valuable farmland and creating a
shortage in itself.
