25, 2011 Panel Members Angel Cabrera, President, Thunderbird School of Management Joe Fuller, CEO, Monitor Group Jose Luiz Gomez, Executive Secretary, Action Fund of Children and the Environment Steve McLaughlin, President of Georgia Tech Global, Inc. and Vice Provost Key Bullets Takeaway Education systems need to focus on working with students that prepares them for challenges in the real world. Early education and science and technology training need to be reorganized to build on competitiveness. Issues (Main Talking Points) • Joe Fuller talked about needing to redefine the question we are asking our schools. Stating today we should ask ourselves “what output would you like the system to create?” He believes the answer to this question is to create citizens who have skill sets applicable to tomorrow’s job industry. • Jose Luis Gomez highlighted the importance of early childhood development. o We learn the most from 0 to 3 years old. Thus, early childhood years need to be used to promote formal (e.g. schools) and informal (e.g. parents) learning. These investments raise prosperity and reduce inequality. o Promote collaboration across all industries, all sectors, and all parts of the community to build an effective education system. o Society must imbed educational development into its fiber; education cannot just be a “program.” • Steve McLaughlin stated that schools must focus on science and technology as the way to mold and create leaders. Promote innovation within student base. Problems, Challenges and Threats Schools efforts are redundant in raising capital for education programs; for example, how many medical studies, foreign campuses, and business schools are there today? Collaboration between these programs could be very beneficial. Keep score and track lessons from early childhood development to build better programs for tomorrow.
