 Introduction
• 'Hamlet'- Its a
tragedy and one type
of revenge play written
by William Shakespear.
• Major conflict
• Rising action
• Climax
• In William
Shakespeare’s tragedy
Hamlet- grave diggers
scene is one of the
longest scenes of the
play.
• Devided into two parts.
 Grave digging scene
1st : Scene of
Ophelia's funeral
2nd : Scene of
encounter
 Ophelia's Funeral and
Encounter scenes
• The penultimate scene of the play begins with
the two clowns digging a grave for the late
Ophelia.
• Religion and the state rules.
• This quickly leads them into a discussion of the
impact of politics on the decision.
• They present Ophelia's case from both
positions
And than..,
• The Second Gravedigger exits as Hamlet and
Horatio enter..
• Hamlet and Horatio enter at a distance and
watch gravediggers work.
• Suddenly, the funeral procession for Ophelia
enters the churchyard, including Claudius,
Gertrude, Laertes, and many mourning
courtiers.
• That time.. Hamlet realised that its Ophelia.
and he starts crie.
• Inevitability of death :
• Realism : Samuel Johnson so highly praised
Shakespeare.
>>Johnson said that "Shakespeare is very
realistin in his portrayal of the world. In the
real world the suffering of one person has
hardly any effect on the life of the other
persons."
 Ghost Scene
• The Ghost scene suggests that the
ghost has an even greater significance
which is related to the development of
the character and theme of the play.
• Supernatural and the importance of
religion.
• The ghost in Hamlet no doubt performs
an important dramatic function.
• King Hamlet appears as a Ghost four
times in the play
• Act1 Scene 1 :
• The Ghost appears
first to a duo of
soldiers.
• Barnardo and
Marcellus and a visitor
to Denmark, Horatio.
• Horatio asks the ghost
to speak.
• Horatio's questions
• Act 1 Scene 4 : In his second appearance,
• The battlement with Hamlet, Horatio, and Marcellus.
• Waiting for the ghost.
• Marcellus then gets to say the really cool line, "Something
is rotten in the state of Denmark."
• Horatio and his friends beg him ( Hamlet ) not to go alone,
but he does anyway, driven by curiosity.
• The ghost leads Hamlet away for a private conversation.
•Act 1 Scene 5 : In the third appearance,
•The ghost speaks to Hamlet.
• Ghost says he needs revenge, and sooner rather
than later, “foul and most unnatural murder”.
•Hamlet promises to avenge his father's death.
•Act 3 Scene 4 : In
his fourth
apperance
•Hamlet is
confronted by the
ghost in his
mother's closet
• Gertrude thinks
Hamlet is mad.
•In this scene, the
ghost is described
as being in his
nightgown.
 Conclusion
The Mystery of Death
 The idea of death is closely tied to
the themes of spirituality, truth,
and uncertainty
