Virtualization started in 2001 with VMware. In 2015 the Cloud native Computing Foundation delivered a standard way to segment applications into microservices, packaging each part into its own isolated container and dynamically orchestrating the activation of those containers on IT servers with optimization of the resources.
VOS is Cloud Native by design. VOS vas launched in 2016, AT&T being the first customer. Thanks to the vision of our R&D team we have a very significant lead over our competitors as Ateme, Mediakind and Synamedia who started to communicate on their Cloud Native solutions a IBC 2019.
The Cloud Native technology bring to VOS number of advantages:
Simplicity and flexibility: achieved using the most modern cloud infrastructure based on the Foundational technology: applications spitted into independent microservices, Docker containers, Kubernetes orchestration.
Easy to use: intuitive workflow oriented user interface, and a rich API giving access to all VOS resources.
Simple for operational teams: handle complex workflows thanks to templates and offer seamless upgrades to the customers.
Secure: assured on ingress with Zixi and SRT transport protocols, on egress with DRM for OTT, and DVB-CSA for Broadcast.
=====================================
2001 - Virtualization started in 2001 with VMware. Building block = a VM (before it was a server).
2006: first cloud, AWS offering to rent servers per hour (IaaS =Infrastructure as a service).
2009: PaaS (platform as a service). Install and manage your applications.
2013: the container concept is standardized (Docker) and had a very fast adoption. It enables isolation, reuse and immutability.
2015: Cloud native Computing Foundation deliver a standard way to segment applications into microservices, packaging each part into its own container and dynamically orchestrating those containers to optimize resource utilization (Kubernetes).
Why is neutrality important?
You may start with COTS servers from vendor A, but tomorrow you may decide to switch and use servers from vendor B. Or, at some point, you may need to replicate your headend in another data center that may use a different virtualization layer.
The VOS infrastructure neutrality provides a significant advantage as it enables the media team’s needs to align with the overall IT preferences as well as provide leverage for future negotiations with infrastructure suppliers.
VOS is infrastructure neutral
VOS was purposely designed to run on any cloud native infrastructure and supports bare metal configurations over a wide range of COTS hardware, and for deployment over Private Clouds it supports container management layers such as Kubernetes (which is preferred by Harmonic), OpenStack and OpenShift.
The preferred deployment environment for VOS is bare metal.
The orchestration is one of the main component of a Cloud Native architecture.
VOS built-in advanced orchestrator connects and synchronizes automatically all media and delivery microservices embedded into containers to fulfil end-to-end workflows.
Compared to traditional appliance-based “siloed” systems where you have dedicated pools of playout servers, encoders, multiplexers etc. it efficiently abstracts and manages IT infrastructure related resources through sophisticated load balancing mechanisms.
The VOS orchestration is also responsible for resource redundancy and ensures that video channels are always up with minimal downtime.
For those customers looking to operate their video infrastructure similar to how their IT departments manage enterprise software, the VOS is the solution.
Portability to Cloud is important.
To move from one data center to another
As a customer your management team may decide in the future that all company applications have to move from the private data center to a public cloud. If your video application is not portable, then you will have to design or buy a new one.
For temporary usage.
The cloud SaaS can be used for temporary event for a few weeks (world cup, politic, etc).
The cloud can be used also for Disaster Recovery. And you don’t want to be locked to a given Cloud vendor.
For both cases renting cloud capacity and of course using the same SW as the one you have on your private data center is the right solution.
VOS is portable to public and private clouds
As a Cloud native SW VOS is designed to operate on private datacenter and public clouds (actually AWS, Microsoft Azur, Google Cloud Platform).
The VOS Hub is the Harmonic’s own backend service easily port an entire video platform from a private datacenter to a public cloud of choice and vice versa. We’ll detail it in a few slides.
Replication (on cloud): VOS portability allows to create backup in public cloud, either permanent 24/7/365 or part time, as DRaaS (Disaster Recovery as a Service).
VOS’s ability to offer a complete horizontally integrated system under one orchestration system versus individual siloed workflows and systems is a strong differentiator.
VOS has a versatile service capability with the support of:
scheduled playout (available in VOS360, it will be activated in VOS from mid 2020),
broadcast delivery, with and without statmux for Cable, DTH, DTT and IPTV,
OTT live streaming; time shifting which includes catchup, startover and nDVR, VOD and SVOD,
ad insertion, by using the scheduled playout as a base band splicer, triggered by SCTE35 (there is an AT&T opportunity that requires this for VOS360),
VOS offers also support for targeted ad by delivering annotated manifests to VOS360, VOS360 being used in this case for the DAI process which includes manifest manipulation, ad origin and CDN.
Market leading premium compression capability of the VOS PURE compression engine is a clear customer benefit leading to cost effective storage and delivery.
The last advantage that we present is the pricing model, which is very flexible, composed of 3 options including two new one.
In summary we have
The Pre-paid capacity pricing model: purchase a given $$ capacity over a term and utilize any functionality on the VOS stack. Capex Model. Default choice.
The Minimum Monthly Commit Model: commit on $$ capacity and pay per month. Backup choice.
The Enterprise License Agreement Model (ELA) : purchase for an agreed $$ unlimited capacity. Capex Model. Special case.
I’ll detail these 3 models in the next slides.
About Sky
Sky Limited is a British media and telecommunications conglomerate owned by Comcast and headquartered in London.
It has operations in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and Spain. Sky is Europe's largest media company and pay-TV broadcaster by revenue (as of 2018),[4] with 23 million subscribers as of 2019.
Harmonic replaced Cisco for OTT compression and Ericsson for DTH after years of presence.
SkyGo – OTT service
Sky Go is an unified OTT offer across the Sky Group in Italy, UK and Germany are supported by VOS Cloud Native Software. It includes live streaming (~250+ services), time shift and nPVR, watch all around the home. More than 130 HD OTT channels are on production in Italy, 44 HD in UK and about 80 channels in Germany.
Sky Solution Overview
In each country, duplicated headend over two synchronized sites for seamless failover without interruption on media playback.
The datacenter is based on HP server. The virtualization layer embedded in VOS is Kubernetes.
Each of the 1+1 headend performs ingest of baseband over IP (2022-6) content, encoding, packaging, encryption and storage/delivery via the Origin module.
Baseband over IP input benefits: full flexibility of IP (dynamic IP routing, multicast, future proof architecture, etc.) + premium VQ.
Full IP headend: VOS receives baseband over IP (SMPTE 2022-6) live signals. This gives Sky the full flexibility of an all-IP headend (dynamic IP routing, multicast,, future proof architecture, etc.) without compromising premium VQ (the signal is baseband with no pre-encoding)
VOS API: Sky uses intensively the rich VOS API to perform configuration and monitoring from their umbrella NMS, and to integrate their CMS and DRM.
Why Sky selected VOS Cloud Native SW?
VOS is a future proof, cloud native platform covering all their current and future needs (Playout, Broadcast, OTT, Delivery, DAI).
Premium compression is mandatory to save storage and CDN delivery costs. They deployed EyeQ™, our Content Aware Encoding technology that achieves up to 50% Storage and CDN cost savings.
Seamless 1+1 Geo-Redundancy: the headend is duplicated over two synchronized sites, providing seamless failover without interruption on media playback,
VOS portability orchestrated by VOS Hub was another key factor as Sky envisions a single platform flexible enough to be deployed across the different Sky entities and both ‘On Prem’ and in the Public Cloud. And VOS cloud neutrality (the ability to run on Google Cloud, AWS, Azure) was valued very high. No lock-in. The others vendors could not port over in weeks, maybe months.
The expected benefits for Sky are the speed to market to meet changes in business requirements, automatic scaling to keep up with demand, and a way to deliver event-based sports content and pop up channels in the cloud - absolute flexibility which can be enabled only by VOS Cloud native software.
Sky Success
The services has been launched successfully in Italy, UK and Germany in September 2019.
What’s next?
Expand SkyGo in more countries in UE, taking advantage of VOS portability to replicate stable and well-proven architectures.
The existing DTH system is based on Electra XOS + ProStream X appliances. Sky want to add Broadcast statmux capability to the current OTT system.
Deploy a Disaster recovery system in the public Cloud for their DTH services - i.e. statistical multiplexing for a significant number of transponders in a fire-drill architecture.
Deploy scheduled playout in the cloud for event and pop-up channels and on-premises for their 24x7 channels.
Fully featured channels for playout, graphics and live streaming, mixing scheduled events with live sources & graphics to create compelling content, with monetization capabilities (play scheduled ads and promos, plus support for downstream ad insertion), offering multiple broadcast and OTT delivery options.
About Etisalat. Etisalat is a multinational Emirati based telecommunications services provider, currently operating in 15 countries across Asia, the Middle East and Africa – 141m subscribers. Etisalat TV service vision is multiscreen, multi-territory content delivery to all 4 screens using a single platform based in the UAE.
eLife ON is a quadruple play service including a large IPTV + OTT offer: stream hundreds of live TV channels from around the globe, see OnDemand movies and TV shows (Hollywood, Arabic, Bollywood, Tagalog, StarzPlay, Shahid) and go back up to 7 days and watch programs you missed with Catch-Up TV. eLive ON serves 1M subscribers.
Etisalat's objective is to massively increase the number of linear television services offered: IPTV (400 SD, 600 HD, 20 UHD HDR), OTT (300 SD + 200 HD) relying on VOS on an on prem infrastructure.
Solution Overview
VOS is deployed on a Huawei’s private datacenter / infrastructure.
A massive number of transcoder is activated for this project: 1000 for IPTV and 500 multi resolution multi bitrate for OTT.
Verimatrix scrambler for OTT and IPTV.
The Origin for non linear and packaging is supported by Huawey.
Their NMS umbrella (Dataminer) uses VOS API to monitor and configure the service line-up.
Why Etisalat selected Harmonic VOS?
Efficient video stack thanks to PURE compression engine that encodes thousands of SD, HD and UHD channels with the best performance and CPU resource footprint. Advanced HDR processing capabilities are also mandatory as they want to offer a premium VQ experience on live UHD Sport content.
End to end workflows. VOS is a future proof platform covering all their current and future needs (Playout, Broadcast, OTT, Delivery, DAI)
Infrastructure Neutral (Docker containers, micro-services, K8s) for their initial on-prem deployment. VOS runs on Huawei’s private datacenter / infrastructure and is by nature portable into the Cloud. This portability into Cloud is something they are looking at for the future as they do have a strong partnership with Microsoft into the fields of cloud (Azure), AI, IoT, blockchain (08/19).
VOS API: Etisalat plans to use the rich VOS API to monitor and control the service line-up from their umbrella NMS which is Dataminer from Skyline Communications. VOS software is already pre-integrated with Dataminer for various on-going VOS deployments (Vodafone as an example).
The pricing model (purchase a given $$ capacity and utilize any functionality on the VOS stack) offer to Etisalat engineers a great flexibility in option activation without frictions with their procurement.
VOS easy and very fast portability orchestrated by VOS Hub was another key factor as Etisalat envision to use the public cloud. This capability is not supported by the competition.
Etisalat Success
Deployment schedule on track record. The full system will be on air in Q1 2019.
What’s next?
The portability of VOS to the public cloud will be used to create a disaster recovery platform, cost effective as it will run in a fire drill architecture.
At some point in time Etisalat will migrate from on-prem to a public cloud. The VOS Hub will help make that happen.

Why AT&T selected VOS Cloud Native SW?
Infrastructure Neutral is key to fit with their initial infrastructure requirements (OpenStack) as well as their new needs (Kubernetes). VOS provides them with easy scaling (they started from 400 services end of 2016 to 850 today), easy migration to the public cloud.
They considered that our built-in advanced orchestrator was a key component to optimally use their IT / CPU resources – better density, minimum overhead resources for redundancy – than any competition.
VOS is the world's most advanced cloud native, media processing and delivery software for private data centers covering all their current and future needs (Playout, Broadcast, OTT, Delivery, DAI). VOS cloud native software is today’s workflow’s in tomorrow’s tech.
They did look at the video stack that VOS supports. It was about the efficiency of our compression engine but also the rich feature set of packaging/Origin.
1+1 Geo redundancy: For big sport events like the Super Bowl, AT&T duplicated the on-prem channels that stream the event into Public Cloud for the duration of the event. This cost effective geo-redundancy is unique in the market as VOS through the Hub can easily port channels between private data centers and the cloud and vice-versa.
Efficient video stack for OTT. They use VOS to ingest, transcode, scramble, record and deliver in HLS, Smooth Streaming and DASH packaging to hundred of different device types (Roku, Android, IOs, Fire TV, etc.)
EyeQ content aware encoding has been activated in 2019 and helps them to save 38% storage and delivery savings (those savings are actual measurements conducted by AT&T teams and represent $200k delivery savings every month) compared to a regular CBR encoding.
For the public cloud delivery they valued also a lot the support that our highly skilled, 24/7 Devops team can bring to ensure the highest level of availability and reliability for their very large scale system.
