programming!
Sorrento Centre provides a holy place
for people of all ages and stages to
come together to form community
through wonderful worship and
prayer, shared nutritious meals,
relaxing times at the beach, creation

through a course on theology
or spirituality, as well as ample
time to play.
This season holds a number of
interesting courses and opportunities
for“learning, healing and belonging”.
If you are returning to us, welcome
back! If you are new to the Centre,
we extend to you a very warm and
special welcome.We look forward
to seeing you!
This year there are some small but
important changes to the Centre and
to our program. We are offering three
guided retreats in April, June and
variety of courses, excellent
programming for children and youth,
and the popular Rest and Relaxation
option. Many familiar instructors are
returning, and we are hosting several
new course leaders. Please spend
time looking at the course offerings.
I am sure you will find one that
piques your interest and will help you
grow in learning and faith. Come
and join us!
Another change this year is a slight
increase in fees for our courses and
for our programs for children and
youth.We also have made changes
to some of our accommodation fees.
Because fees at the Centre have not
been altered for two years, we hope
that these small increases do not
hinder your decision to join us. Our
bursary fund continues for those who
may need support in order to come
– see page 17 for details.
The other big news is that we now
offer on-line registration!To use this
November.These promise to be rich
experiences of time away from busy
schedules and demands in order to
delve deeply into the Spirit’s wisdom.
We also offer a fantastic 5 Weeks of
Summer program with an interesting
feature in signing up for a course,
simply go online to our website at
www.sorrento-centre.bc.ca, press
the“register now”link and . . . voila!

we will be happy to register you
over the phone.
We do hope that you make Sorrento
Centre part of your 2017 plans.

ABIDING GIFTS: ABIDING PRESENCE: SORRENTO CENTRE ANNUAL APPEAL
Here is how you can help support Sorrento Centre!!Here is how you can help support Sorrento Centre!!
Thank you for your generous support and for your “abiding gifts and abiding presence”Thank you for your generous support and for your “abiding gifts and abiding presence”
in the life of Sorrento Centre.in the life of Sorrento Centre.
Sorrento Centre is a not-for-profit organization that operates as a year-
round conference facility and retreat centre. Over 3,600 people shared
the Sorrento Centre experience in 2016! Our inter-generational program
involves participants ranging in age from infants to 90-year-olds, and from
as far away as the UK to those who live right here
in Sorrento! We offer course subjects as diverse as
science and theology, climate change and food
security, prayer, hiking, journaling, and the arts.
In addition, we provide a rest and relaxation
option along with creative worship, giving
participants opportunities for learning, recreation,
renewal, and faith formation. Sorrento Centre has
a long and valued history as a place for sound faith
formation, liberal Anglican theological/educational
opportunities, creative and meaningful worship,
and community.
We welcome groups from February to mid-December. Our beautiful
surroundings, friendly hospitality, excellent meals, and clean residential
rooms are the setting for meetings, retreats and privately run courses.
In 2016 Sorrento Centre welcomed over 53 different groups who
used the site and facility as a conference centre with bookings up 20%
over the previous year.
The annual cost of running Sorrento Centre is $1,500,000.
Sorrento Centre depends upon the generosity of our associates, friends,
and guests. Fee-based income accounts for 70% of operating expenses.
As is the case for most not-for-profit organizations, the remainder of our
income is from generous annual donations. We are carefully managing
our costs so that given the income from these two sources, our
operations will be fully funded and needed facilities
maintained and renewed.
Our hope is to receive an additional $175,000
annually in committed new donations through
the Abiding Gifts: Abiding Presence annual
campaign. These funds will assist in ensuring
that our vital ministries of learning, healing
and belonging continue and that Sorrento
Centre sustains excellence in programming,
hospitality, faith education, and youth
leadership training and experience.
Learn how you can be a contributing partner in our success by visiting
our website at www.sorrento-centre.bc.ca and clicking on Abiding Gifts:

and we will be happy to help you set up a donation or annual pledge.

ORGANIZATION AND ACTIVITIESORGANIZATION AND ACTIVITIES
Our program for children and youth is organized
according to age groups, providing activities and
projects suitable at each level:
OUR 0-4 PROGRAM has been created for
children up to four years of age. Members of
SummerYouth Staff are trained to offer our
youngest guests special care and attention.
We have both outdoor and indoor areas for
activities and play with toys. The outdoor area
is fenced. Daily tactile activities that stimulate
the senses are focused on early development,
safe play, and the experience of God’s love.
OUR 5-13 PROGRAM has been developed for all
our guests from ages five to thirteen. On the first
day, they meet in the portables and are divided
into two groups based on age.We plan many
high-energy activities for our young people
because they are the members of our community
who are looking for maximum play! Our Summer
Youth Staff works to create diverse opportunities
based on age, interest and abilities.
GENERATION NEXT is for all guests who are
fourteen to eighteen. We recognize that teenagers
are not children and have created this ongoing
program to empower them to explore ideas
having to do with faith, friendship, and
community. Learning in this program integrates
play, work, discussion, and prayer, all within a safe
environment that encourages participants’
engagement with their community.
LEAP LEADERSHIP - Generation Next
participants often continue their path at Sorrento
Centre by attending LEAP (Leadership, Experience,
and Adventure Program). For more information
about LEAP please see page 5.
ACTIVITIESACTIVITIES
OutdoorsOutdoors
Summers at Sorrento Centre call for time spent
outside! Our programming unplugs us from the
technology of our world and allows us to spend
time outdoors, surrounded by the wonders of
creation. Activities during a typical week include
beach time, water games, wide games, hikes,
sports, and free play.
Arts and MusicArts and Music
Arts, crafts, and music allow participants to
creatively connect with God and their inner selves.
Our program employs diverse artistic mediums,
including tye-dye, bead work, painting, and
sculpture. To bring us all together, theatrical
elements include games and skits, music making,
and the sharing of songs.
FAITHFAITH
Faith is central within our programming. Each
week’s program is planned around a theme and
grounded in scripture. We support children and
youth explore their relationship with God as they
feel comfortable.
In creative ways we integrate themes into our daily
activities that are fun and engaging. Because faith
is one of the links that ties our community
together, we are dedicated to creating a safe place
for young people to experience their faith.
Children andYouth Program feesChildren andYouth Program fees
for 2017 are $75/child,for 2017 are $75/child,
after 2nd child: $50/childafter 2nd child: $50/child
Offering an inclusive environment, Sorrento
Centre creates a dynamic opportunity for families
to take a step away from the daily routine. Children
can participate in programming while parents
have the choice of enrolling in a course or simply
enjoying“Rest and Relaxation”(see page 9).
Our Children and Youth Program invites young
people to be part of a community that
encourages and nurtures the development of
Christian faith in an environment that is safe and
fun. This all takes place in the unique setting of
Sorrento Centre and beautiful Shuswap Lake.

LUMOS! HARRY POTTER has been one of the
bestselling books of our time. This simple yet
complex story has touched the hearts of many over
the past decades because of its portrayal of love,
friendship and loyalty in contrast to injustice,
prejudice and racism. Underlying the story of Harry
Potter are threads of the Gospel woven together
into a tapestry of a magical world not so different
from our own.
This program explores
the Harry Potter series to theologically reflect on
various characters in the books and foster a deeper
discussion on issues of racism/prejudice and social
justice. We will explore Hogwarts Houses, Muggles,
Witches andWizards and Squibs, House Elves, and of
course Grindelwald andVoldemort. From there, we
use headline news, the Bible and Harry Potter to see
how we can develop our theological imagination
and spiritual activism.
Feel free to bring your favourite
Harry Potter book and a Bible (and
a costume if you want!).We will be
‘sorted’into houses for our small-group discussion.
Along with Sorrento Centre,Winter Retreat is
organized by a partnership of the British Columbia
andYukon Anglican
Youth Movement and
the DiocesanYouth

“GOD DOESN’T COME TO US IN A WIND, and God doesn’t come to us
in an earthquake, and God doesn’t come to us in Fire. God comes to us in a still,
small voice, as God came to Elijah, in the first book of Kings.
All we have to do is listen.”
– Chris Anderson, Light When it Comes –
Trusting Joy, Facing Darkness & Seeing God in Everything.
GOD CREATED ME, BUT CAN I CREATE? Have you ever wondered when you look a beautiful
photograph,“How did they capture that image so well?”What makes someone else’s images so
good while you struggle?
Being inspired by what you see and learning how to create your own unique images will be what
we will do this weekend. We will explore tips to help you see in the light and in the dark: how to
create images that will provide the tools to continue the journey … the journey of telling your
own story through imagery.
You create in your own unique way, like God created only one version of you. Only you can create
your way.We will not focus on creating pretty images/moments, but acknowledge that all
moments and images are good.
This will be done by examining our consciousness – reviewing our day, looking at the moments
and listening to the fragments in our day; and as a result connect to
our true selves and God.We will practice seeing as God sees us.This
goes beyond“selfies”and is the journey to the true Self – the self God
sees and loves.
Bring your cell phone or digital camera. Make sure you know how to
use your camera… but we will review the basics. We will also be using
Instagram so have it downloaded if you are interested in joining us in
using it.We will give you the hashtag to use when we meet.
PHILOMENA HUGHES has lived her life with a camera by her side
since she was 11. Born in Prince George, BC, she has lived in Japan and
Ireland, but after studying photography in Victoria, returned to live in
Prince George and opened her own studio. Her love of people and
helping them do better in business/photography/life brings her joy.
Her family and friends always know if you are with Philomena you
are bond to be ina picture. Her current studio is a space that also is
home to artists and an art shop which makes life very joyful indeed. Instagram handle if you
want to check her out is Philomena_hughes.

WETEACHWHOWE ARE.
The best teaching arises from the identity and
integrity of the one who teaches. Teaching can
never be reduced to techniques and methods.
During this program, educators are invited to
reflect on questions of selfhood and teaching:
“Who is the self that teaches?
How does the quality of my selfhood form –
or deform – the way I relate to my students,
my subject, my colleagues, my world?”
– from Parker J. Palmer,
The Courage to Teach
(10th Anniversary Edition)
A COURAGETOTEACH PROGRAM invites the
personal and professional development of the
identity, authenticity and integrity of a teacher.
The practices of Courage toTeach were
developed by Parker J. Palmer, PhD, and the
Centre for Courage & Renewal; facilitators have
been prepared by Palmer and the Center to
facilitate these experiences.
During the program, participants will be invited
to renew heart, mind, and spirit through the
exploration of the inner landscape of a teacher’s
life: to identify and honour gifts and strengths
and acknowledge limits.
In large-group, small-group, and solitary settings,
“the heart of a teacher”is explored, making use of
personal stories, reflections on teaching
practice, and insights from poets,
storytellers, and various wisdom
traditions.
We will use the rich metaphors of the
spring season as a way of exploring
vocational and life questions.The
experience is often referred to as a‘Circle
ofTrust’. In these circles, we are invited to
slow down, listen, and reflect in a quiet
and focused space. At the same time,
we engage in dialogue with others
in the circle – a dialogue about things
that matter.
DAN HINES is a Courage & Renewal®
facilitator mentored by Parker J. Palmer and
the Center for Courage & Renewal.
Dan is a leadership consultant
for business, educational, and
religious organizations, as well as
a coach and speaker.
Much of his professional
experience has been in ministry as
an ordained priest in the Anglican
Church of Canada.
His approach as a facilitator,
priest, consultant and coach is to
help others rediscover their
integrity and identity.
Recently, Dan has also begun
consulting about intentional
communities and co-operative living from his
ongoing experience with the RareBirds Housing
Co-operative, an intentional community in
Kamloops, British Columbia which he co-created
with his spouse and nine others.
Dan holds a Master of Divinity and has a
background in management, contracting and
horticulture. He feels the most integrated when
hiking and camping and always welcomes a
good meal with friends.

ARCHBISHOP ROWANWILLIAMS suggests that secularism as it is popularly understood
has failed.“We may not live in a theocratic state, but the global political agenda is being set
by the concerns of religious communities . . . .”
How, then, might we, as followers of Jesus committed to the paschal mystery, enliven our
spiritual and religious imagination so that our prayerful presence before God may be
faithful to God, faithful to one another, and faithful to our church in these new times?
What do these new days call us to do different from that of
previous generations? What have two centuries taught us that
is timeless for those born in the waters of Baptism?
Our time together will include prayerful listening, challenging
conversation, and deep silence.
JOHN CHAPMAN, Bishop of Ottawa, works toward
a renewed and renewing church and mission that is nimble
and responsive to today’s unique times.
He would strongly suggest, “While these are extremely exciting
and hopeful times, unlike our parents’ generation, we do not
have as our example and guide the teachings of our
grandmothers and grandfathers.
Our context for prayer and longing for God, mission,
storytelling, and justice seeking is so unlike that of any generation before us, it can be said
we are witnessing Jesus in a new time.”

A PRACTICE is an intention, a forgetting and
a remembering, an ongoing journey.
	 • It may flow like a river in the springtime
– fast and furious.
	 • It may be still and swamp-like in the summer
– with flies buzzing along its surface.
	 • It may be clear and green and waiting in the autumn
– reflecting the clouds overhead.
	 • It may seem to disappear in the wintertime
– sleeping underneath a blanket of ice and snow.
SPIRITUALITY is like the river – constant yet ever
changing. Our beliefs, values, and traditions change
over time; so will our practices.
During Associates’ Week, we will explore a different
spiritual practice each day. These practices may include,
but not be limited to, the following activities:
	 • walking the Labyrinth (indoor and outdoor)
	 • centering prayer/meditation (nature)
	 • Lectio Divina (with scripture)
	 • mindfulness (intentional nourishment)
	 • Dream Mapping (Unopened Letters from God,

WILLYOU STRIVETO SAFEGUARD
the integrity of God’s creation and
respect, sustain, and renew the life
of the earth?
Through a daily cycle of prayer,
reflection, silence, and response,
we will both individually and as
a group explore how we can
safeguard God’s creation.
After our times of daily prayer and
a reflection, you will be invited to be
in silence in the natural world, closely
observing, listening, and thinking.
You may respond through journaling,
writing, any of the arts, or through
scientific exploration. If you wish, your responses
can be shared with the group.
This retreat is your time to engage in this topic in
your own way.

WHAT ARETHE SOURCES AND ENERGIES that
make it possible to retain hope? When faith thins,
failure clings, and uncertainty prevails, one
occupies a harrowed landscape of the soul.
The Divine can transform such an inner landscape
into an environment of the spirit. The long history
of Christian Faith offers examples that both
fascinate and inspire.
We will recreate times
and places that
became landscapes of
spirituality.

rusty metals to make marks for us
and we will dip into an indigo vat that produces
magical blues.
Woven into our week together will be the simple
pleasure of some hand stitching inspired by the
intriguing and inspirational results of our dyeing
and printing. We hope that this will provide
inspiration for future explorations.
No experience necessary – come explore and play
with us!
A $25 materials fee is payable on the first day.
KATHY KINSELLA is a textile artist who lives just
down the lake from Sorrento Centre. Eco printing
and natural dyeing with locally gathered leaves
are Kathy’s current obsession and many of the
fabrics in her work are hand-painted, hand dyed
or eco printed. She delights in exploring
a variety of surface treatments and in
using hand stitching to create added
texture and interest.

THOMAS ROACH is a Vancouver-
based textile and liturgical artist who
taught himself to sew at age six
because he couldn’t draw. Many years
later he is still stitching and working
with textiles.
His art seeks
connection to the

“LIFE REVIEW”IS A SMALL GROUP PROCESS of reflecting on, writing about, and telling one’s
life history. Understanding where we’ve been, what we’ve done, and how we’ve been shaped by
life events, we can better imagine and plan our future.
The thematic approach of“Life Review”brings understanding of the past into the present.
The process is not counselling, but is facilitated by trained counsellors and educators.
Small groups meet for 3 hours each morning over 5 days, and for 1 hour on 2 afternoons.
Each session focuses sensitizing questions on themes such as branching points,
family experiences, and life work.
Participants reflect and write on each theme, read their written“life stories”to their small group,
witness others’stories, and give/receive feedback to/from group members.
Benefits of“Life Review”include
	 • greater understanding of past experience; confidence to move forward
	 • re-established interest in past activities
	 • recognition and renewal of abilities that mobilize past coping skills within current life
	 • resolution of past resentments and negative feelings
	 • deeper sense of purpose and meaning

OTHE DIFFERENCE between memorizing a story
and learning it, between acting out a story and
embodying it, between reciting a story and telling
a story!
Are you interested in breathing life into a story?
Learn to tell stories with confidence, ease, and
a sense of wonder in these enjoyable interactive
sessions.
At our first meeting I will provide you a selection
of scriptural stories and folk tales from which to
choose. Day by day, through movement, character
development, visualization, vocal improvisation
and art work, you will learn to tell that story.
We will address how we set the tone for our
stories, how we discover the sense of wonder that
compels teller and listener alike, and how we
reveal our understanding through silence and
gesture as well as words.
We will conclude the week by telling our stories!
You will leave Sorrento with stories to tell, and
a set of skills and techniques to employ at any time
to help you learn and tell new stories.
Dive into the art of the oral tradition by which
narratives, teachings, wisdom, and great truths are
imparted to listeners through the skillful art and
entertainment of a story well told!

WE HAVE THREE UNIVERSAL SPIRITUAL
NEEDS, no matter our spiritual or religious
background: relatedness and belonging;
meaning and purpose; forgiveness and
reconciliation. This course will look at how
we meet these needs and examine
how they become especially
important in times of suffering.
Suffering tends to make people feel
alienated and alone in the world;
thus, we are called to a new
awareness of our need for relatedness
and belonging. Suffering can pull the
rug out from under our feet, the loss
of meaning and purpose becoming
a central reality of our lives.
How do we live with this disrupted
vision for a time and then restore new
directions for our future? And how
much of what we learn and gain as we transcend
suffering actually becomes a large part of our new
life? Suffering invariably brings awareness of our
need for forgiveness and, at times, reconciliation.
Repressed resentment costs us too much of the
energy required to expend on our healing.

connection, self-expression, and healing.
Epictetus (AD 55–135) said,“First say to yourself
what you would be; and then do what you have
to do.”Our intention is the starting point of every
dream. Nothing begins except from our intention.
We know things but seldom take the time to
move this wisdom from our heads to our hearts
and finally into action despite God’s
encouragement in Matthew 5:16:“In the same
way, let your light shine before others, that they
may see your good deeds and glorify your Father
in heaven.”
Let’s explore, through writing and imagery, what it
takes to get us moving towards our best bright
selves.

INTHEWESTERNWORLD, science and theology
are too often assumed to be at odds.Yet even
within a post-modern, secular, technological
society, religious beliefs and practices remain
a vital sphere of human existence and
experience – shaping public
engagement, political motivations and
broader social/cultural movements.
How do you see science and religion?
As enemies? As friends? Or perhaps
they are threads in a larger tapestry?
Equipped with wonder, stories, and
a little bit of math, our week-long romp
focuses on how our world views are
shaped.
We will examine ideas such as‘meaning’
and‘interpretation’, creation narratives,
big moments in history (some may not
be what you thought!), quantum theology,
advances in neuroscience and concepts of self and
soul, and what it means to be human in“The Divine
Milieu”(–Teilhard de Chardin).
From God to Greeks to Galileo to Gluons, with
both sides of our brains we’ll explore these
questions and more, through contemporary and
ancient writers, videos, lectures, discussions,
creative arts, and a field trip to
another galaxy. Geeks are welcome,
but you don’t have to be good at
science to take this course. You need
only be a seeker wanting to dig deep
into some big questions.
Warning: paradigms might shift.

ATTACHMENT THEORY emerged in
psychology as a way of understanding how
our relationships are strongly shaped by
our patterns of relating to our primary
caregivers. These crucial lifelong patterns
affect not only our family ties, but our
romantic relationships and our way of
connecting with important groups:
workplaces, churches, social groups.
In this session we will explore the
significance of attachment and identify
our own attachment styles. We will
encourage new insight into our own
styles, expanding the choices available to
us as parents, spouses, friends, workers
and leaders within the Church.

FIVE DAY HIKES – FIVE LITTLE PILGRIMAGES
Draw wisdom from naturalists, poets, rascals and
saints as we consider our relationship within the
natural world and a viable place within God’s
ecology. Each day’s hike explores a new location
in the Shuswap and is framed in the simple form
of contemplative prayer, reflection, and sharing
along the trail that has come to mark the 21st
Century Pilgrims series. See page 11 for the full

WHEN PEACE FEELSTENUOUS, political
rhetoric turns divisive, and empathy and
compassion become depleted in our public
conversation, how do we uphold the brave
practice of making art?
How do we justify our time spent retreating into
ourselves to read a book, take out a paintbrush, or
compose a sentence or song in our notebooks?
What is the point of a poem when the world is on
fire? But such times are precisely when
imagination is needed most.
This course will inspire, encourage, and teach ways
of keeping a sustainable artistic practice that does
not ignore the world’s injustices, but seeks ways to
offer our creativity and quietude as acts of activism
and peace in our own homes, workplaces, and
communities.
Sunday,July30-Saturday,August5,2017
We will look at visual art, performances, short
essays, stories, and poetry for inspiration.
We will make art every day, primarily through
creative writing, but also through the mediums
of drawing, painting, music, and photography.
For, as author Toni Morrison advises,
“There is no time for despair and no
room for fear. We speak, we write, we do

SCRIPTURE SCHOLARWalter Brueggemann says
that in worship, Christians participate with God in
“world-making”– imagining God’s
radical alternative vision and
proclaiming it to a culture of violence,
oppression, and greed.
Our stories, songs, prayers, and actions
within worship shape our beliefs,
our relationships, and our actions
in the world.
How does our worship help or hinder
us as a pilgrim community of believers
seeking to be living witnesses of the
Gospel to a culture often at odds with
the teachings and vision of Jesus and
his Reign?

INTHIS 4-DAYWORKSHOP students will
transform words into imagery. Using their
favourite quotes, poetry, passages or other
words of wisdom as a starting place, we
will explore different ways to bring those
words to life.
Our first two days together will be all
about design – through a series of simple
activities we will create graphic marks,
symbols and imagery on paper.
Day 3 and 4 will see us taking those ideas
to fabric, creating compositions and
completed designs with our chosen
words to guide us.
Students will explore the elements of
design as well as specialized fabric
techniques.

IN AYEAR OFWORLDWIDE STRESSandstrain,wewillgathertowork,play,andthrough
Eucharist“GiveThanks”together. We will explore our individual perceptions of a God who
imagines us into being, and how we portray that creative process to the world in which
“we live and move and have our being”.What does this look like now? In the future?
Being imagined and breathed into being by God, we have great and frequently
unrecognized power within us.We are co-creators with God and can tap into this
creative energy ourselves, enabling us to have a transformative effect in God’s glorious
new creation.  We will explore ways that our acts of gratitude can direct these creative
energies as we seek to be true to our call to do“more than we can ask or imagine”, giving
Glory to God throughout our lives – individually and corporately, young and old together.
My very deepest desire is that all who are gathered will have ample opportunity to share
their creative imaginings with the community.Yes, kids, this means you too!

Fall
Retreat
TO RETREAT ISTO COME AWAY for a time to a quiet
place where we can attend to our relationship with
God and, in a busy world, find a safe
space to rest in God.
Advent is a season of preparation for
Christmas – for most of us it is a time of
increased demands calling us to the
malls, to the kitchen, to social events,
and to many opportunities for
reconnection with friends and family.
The word“advent”comes from the Latin
adventus which means“coming”. Since
at least the 12th century it refers to the 3
comings of Christ – in our history, in our
hearts each day, and in glory at the end
of time.
In the midst of our busy lives Advent gives us an opportunity
to slow down and to create a place where God in Christ can
come to us, speaking to the deep and
sometimes forgotten corners of our lives. This
retreat will help us in the process of slowing
down and listening for the One who comes.

Louise Peters Executive Director ABIDING GIFTS: ABIDING PRESENCE: SORRENTO CENTRE ANNUAL APPEAL Here is how you can help support Sorrento Centre!!Here is how you can help support Sorrento Centre!! Thank you for your generous support and for your “abiding gifts and abiding presence”Thank you for your generous support and for your “abiding gifts and abiding presence” in the life of Sorrento Centre.in the life of Sorrento Centre. Sorrento Centre is a not-for-profit organization that operates as a year- round conference facility and retreat centre. Over 3,600 people shared the Sorrento Centre experience in 2016! Our inter-generational program involves participants ranging in age from infants to 90-year-olds, and from as far away as the UK to those who live right here in Sorrento! We offer course subjects as diverse as science and theology, climate change and food security, prayer, hiking, journaling, and the arts. In addition, we provide a rest and relaxation option along with creative worship, giving participants opportunities for learning, recreation, renewal, and faith formation. Sorrento Centre has a long and valued history as a place for sound faith formation, liberal Anglican theological/educational opportunities, creative and meaningful worship, and community. We welcome groups from February to mid-December. Our beautiful surroundings, friendly hospitality, excellent meals, and clean residential rooms are the setting for meetings, retreats and privately run courses. In 2016 Sorrento Centre welcomed over 53 different groups who used the site and facility as a conference centre with bookings up 20% over the previous year. The annual cost of running Sorrento Centre is $1,500,000. Sorrento Centre depends upon the generosity of our associates, friends, and guests. Fee-based income accounts for 70% of operating expenses. As is the case for most not-for-profit organizations, the remainder of our income is from generous annual donations. We are carefully managing our costs so that given the income from these two sources, our operations will be fully funded and needed facilities maintained and renewed. Our hope is to receive an additional $175,000 annually in committed new donations through the Abiding Gifts: Abiding Presence annual campaign. These funds will assist in ensuring that our vital ministries of learning, healing and belonging continue and that Sorrento Centre sustains excellence in programming, hospitality, faith education, and youth leadership training and experience. Learn how you can be a contributing partner in our success by visiting our website at www.sorrento-centre.bc.ca and clicking on Abiding Gifts: Abiding Presence. Alternatively, you may call our office (250-675-2421) and we will be happy to help you set up a donation or annual pledge. Welcome from the Executive DirectorWelcome from the Executive Director

HARRY POTTER has been one of the bestselling books of our time. This simple yet complex story has touched the hearts of many over the past decades because of its portrayal of love, friendship and loyalty in contrast to injustice, prejudice and racism. Underlying the story of Harry Potter are threads of the Gospel woven together into a tapestry of a magical world not so different from our own. This program explores the Harry Potter series to theologically reflect on various characters in the books and foster a deeper discussion on issues of racism/prejudice and social justice. We will explore Hogwarts Houses, Muggles, Witches andWizards and Squibs, House Elves, and of course Grindelwald andVoldemort. From there, we use headline news, the Bible and Harry Potter to see how we can develop our theological imagination and spiritual activism. Feel free to bring your favourite Harry Potter book and a Bible (and a costume if you want!).We will be ‘sorted’into houses for our small-group discussion. Have you ever wondered when you look a beautiful photograph,“How did they capture that image so well?”What makes someone else’s images so good while you struggle? Being inspired by what you see and learning how to create your own unique images will be what we will do this weekend. We will explore tips to help you see in the light and in the dark: how to create images that will provide the tools to continue the journey … the journey of telling your own story through imagery. You create in your own unique way, like God created only one version of you. Only you can create your way.We will not focus on creating pretty images/moments, but acknowledge that all moments and images are good. This will be done by examining our consciousness – reviewing our day, looking at the moments and listening to the fragments in our day; and as a result connect to our true selves and God.We will practice seeing as God sees us.This goes beyond“selfies”and is the journey to the true Self – the self God sees and loves. Bring your cell phone or digital camera. Make sure you know how to use your camera… but we will review the basics. We will also be using Instagram so have it downloaded if you are interested in joining us in using it.We will give you the hashtag to use when we meet. The best teaching arises from the identity and integrity of the one who teaches. Teaching can never be reduced to techniques and methods. During this program, educators are invited to reflect on questions of selfhood and teaching: “Who is the self that teaches? How does the quality of my selfhood form – or deform – the way I relate to my students, my subject, my colleagues, my world?” – from Parker J. Palmer, The Courage to Teach (10th Anniversary Edition) A COURAGETOTEACH PROGRAM invites the personal and professional development of the identity, authenticity and integrity of a teacher. The practices of Courage toTeach were developed by Parker J. Palmer, PhD, and the Centre for Courage & Renewal; facilitators have been prepared by Palmer and the Center to facilitate these experiences. During the program, participants will be invited to renew heart, mind, and spirit through the exploration of the inner landscape of a teacher’s life: to identify and honour gifts and strengths and acknowledge limits. In large-group, small-group, and solitary settings, “the heart of a teacher”is explored, making use of personal stories, reflections on teaching practice, and insights from poets, storytellers, and various wisdom traditions. We will use the rich metaphors of the spring season as a way of exploring vocational and life questions. The experience is often referred to as a‘Circle ofTrust’. In these circles, we are invited to slow down, listen, and reflect in a quiet and focused space. At the same time, we engage in dialogue with others in the circle – a dialogue about things that matter. DAN HINES is a Courage & Renewal® facilitator mentored by Parker J. Palmer and the Center for Courage & Renewal. Dan is a leadership consultant for business, educational, and religious organizations, as well as a coach and speaker. Much of his professional experience has been in ministry as an ordained priest in the Anglican Church of Canada. His approach as a facilitator, priest, consultant and coach is to help others rediscover their integrity and identity. Recently, Dan has also begun consulting about intentional communities and co-operative living from his ongoing experience with the RareBirds Housing Co-operative, an intentional community in Kamloops, British Columbia which he co-created with his spouse and nine others. Dan holds a Master of Divinity and has a background in management, contracting and horticulture. What do these new days call us to do different from that of previous generations? What have two centuries taught us that is timeless for those born in the waters of Baptism? Our time together will include prayerful listening, challenging conversation, and deep silence. JOHN CHAPMAN, Bishop of Ottawa, works toward a renewed and renewing church and mission that is nimble and responsive to today’s unique times. He would strongly suggest, “While these are extremely exciting and hopeful times, unlike our parents’ generation, we do not have as our example and guide the teachings of our grandmothers and grandfathers. Our context for prayer and longing for God, mission, storytelling, and justice seeking is so unlike that of any generation before us, it can be said we are witnessing Jesus in a new time.” • Course fee: $315, includes retreat sessions, meals Friday dinner through Sunday dinner, and accommodation. A PRACTICE is an intention, a forgetting and a remembering, an ongoing journey. • It may flow like a river in the springtime – fast and furious. • It may be still and swamp-like in the summer – with flies buzzing along its surface. • It may be clear and green and waiting in the autumn – reflecting the clouds overhead. • It may seem to disappear in the wintertime – sleeping underneath a blanket of ice and snow. SPIRITUALITY is like the river – constant yet ever changing. Our beliefs, values, and traditions change over time; so will our practices. During Associates’ Week, we will explore a different spiritual practice each day. These practices may include, but not be limited to, the following activities: • walking the Labyrinth (indoor and outdoor) • centering prayer/meditation (nature) • Lectio Divina (with scripture) • mindfulness (intentional nourishment) • Dream Mapping (Unopened Letters from God, B. Haden) Spiritual Practices for EverydaySpiritual Practices for Everyday withJoanAlexander WILLYOU STRIVETO SAFEGUARD the integrity of God’s creation and respect, sustain, and renew the life of the earth? Through a daily cycle of prayer, reflection, silence, and response, we will both individually and as a group explore how we can safeguard God’s creation. After our times of daily prayer and a reflection, you will be invited to be in silence in the natural world, closely observing, listening, and thinking. You may respond through journaling, writing, any of the arts, or through scientific exploration. If you wish, your responses can be shared with the group. This course will look at how we meet these needs and examine how they become especially important in times of suffering. Suffering tends to make people feel alienated and alone in the world; thus, we are called to a new awareness of our need for relatedness and belonging. Suffering can pull the rug out from under our feet, the loss of meaning and purpose becoming a central reality of our lives. How do we live with this disrupted vision for a time and then restore new directions for our future? And how much of what we learn and gain as we transcend suffering actually becomes a large part of our new life? Suffering invariably brings awareness of our need for forgiveness and, at times, reconciliation. Repressed resentment costs us too much of the energy required to expend on our healing. How do you see science and religion? As enemies? As friends? Or perhaps they are threads in a larger tapestry? Equipped with wonder, stories, and a little bit of math, our week-long romp focuses on how our world views are shaped. We will examine ideas such as‘meaning’ and‘interpretation’, creation narratives, big moments in history (some may not be what you thought!), quantum theology, advances in neuroscience and concepts of self and soul, and what it means to be human in“The Divine Milieu”(–Teilhard de Chardin). From God to Greeks to Galileo to Gluons, with both sides of our brains we’ll explore these questions and more, through contemporary and ancient writers, videos, lectures, discussions, creative arts, and a field trip to another galaxy. How does our worship help or hinder us as a pilgrim community of believers seeking to be living witnesses of the Gospel to a culture often at odds with the teachings and vision of Jesus and his Reign? Using their favourite quotes, poetry, passages or other words of wisdom as a starting place, we will explore different ways to bring those words to life. Our first two days together will be all about design – through a series of simple activities we will create graphic marks, symbols and imagery on paper. Day 3 and 4 will see us taking those ideas to fabric, creating compositions and completed designs with our chosen words to guide us. Students will explore the elements of design as well as specialized fabric techniques. CATHERINE NICHOLLS is a painter, writer, teacher and quilt-maker. Inspired by legends, stories, and words in general, her work is developed through drawing, painting, and mixed media in sketchbooks. When working with textile, she uses discharge, dyeing, drawing, painting, and printing, along with more traditional techniques. Catherine now lives and works in Gibsons, B.C. and draws inspiration from the natural world, her travels, and the people she meets along the way. In the future? Being imagined and breathed into being by God, we have great and frequently unrecognized power within us.We are co-creators with God and can tap into this creative energy ourselves, enabling us to have a transformative effect in God’s glorious new creation.  We will explore ways that our acts of gratitude can direct these creative energies as we seek to be true to our call to do“more than we can ask or imagine”, giving Glory to God throughout our lives – individually and corporately, young and old together. My very deepest desire is that all who are gathered will have ample opportunity to share their creative imaginings with the community.Yes, kids, this means you too! Advent is a season of preparation for Christmas – for most of us it is a time of increased demands calling us to the malls, to the kitchen, to social events, and to many opportunities for reconnection with friends and family. The word“advent”comes from the Latin adventus which means“coming”. Since at least the 12th century it refers to the 3 comings of Christ – in our history, in our hearts each day, and in glory at the end of time. In the midst of our busy lives Advent gives us an opportunity to slow down and to create a place where God in Christ can come to us, speaking to the deep and sometimes forgotten corners of our lives. This retreat will help us in the process of slowing down and listening for the One who comes.
