Cooperative Games – from Marie Baker, Tidewater Community College, Virginia
A cooperative game or activity is a group problem-solving task. All group members must work together to
overcome barriers or obstacles encountered. The failure of one person to work with the group can result in a
total breakdown of the group task. Members of the team work for the betterment of the total group. This
reaffirms confidence in self allowing even the weakest student many ways to succeed.
Participants of cooperative challenges will learn to:
a.Trust
b.Make group decisions
c.Communicate with others
d.Share ideas, moving away from egocentricity
e.Cooperate with others to complete an assigned task

The following is a short list of very creative and delightfully fun cooperative games. Others may be
found in resource books listed in this handout. These books may be found in your local public
library, the library or media center at the community college closest to you or in your local
university library.
Elbow Tag
Participants stand side by side, facing opposite directions and hook one elbow. One person is ‘IT’
and chasing the other person. The person getting chased is ‘Safe” if they hook arms with another
couple. Then the person on the other side of the chain, becomes the person being chased. As soon
as someone is tagged, they become ‘IT’. The game ends when the children are tired or playing.
Change rules as needed.

Sock Wars
The game begins with each team’s Jedi Knight standing at the
very back of the team’s area, just in front of the end of the
line. The rest of the players use rolled-up socks as space
projectiles by throwing them across the midline toward players
on the other team. A player who is hit by a flying sock sprawls
out on the floor (as dramatically as possible) and waits for the
Jedi Knight to come save him or her. The Jedi Knight does this
with a touch of the rolled newspaper or soft plastic rod, at
which time the teammate comes back to life and rejoins the
action. If a sock hits a Jedi Knight, he or she also must sprawl
out on the floor and can no longer save teammates. A round
ends when all the members of one team are on the floor.

Cat and Dog
Two objects are being passed in a circle.
First person hands object to a second person.
1st person This is a dog.
2nd personA what?
1st personA dog.
2nd person to the 3rd personThis is a dog.
3rd personA what?
2nd person to the 1st personA what?
1st person A dog.
2nd personA dog.
Continues through the whole circle. After the round
with the dog, start in other direction with a cat.

Fox and Squirrel
Three balls get passed around the circle. Two are foxes.
Squirrel can jump – fox can’t jump but can change
directions.
Ooh – Aah
Hand squeeze being passed around the circle.
Add an ooh with the squeeze.
Add an aah with the squeeze in the other direction.
Hagoo – Unsmiling
In the language of the Tlingit Indians of Alaska, hagoo means “come here”.
Invitation to a stony-faced challenger to walk a laughing gauntlet without smiling.
Two lines, about three-feet apart. Two players, one from each team, stand at
opposite end of the line, bow and say, “Hagoo”. They walk toward each other, not
breaking eye contact nor their reserve. If they cannot keep their reserve, they join
the other team.
Prui
Want to find Prui? Everyone is blind folded. Mingle and shake hands and ask, “Prui?”
If there is an answer of “Prui?” you have not found Prui. When there is no answer of
Prui, you have found Prui, and can find hands to hold and open eyes. Games ends
when everyone has found Prui.

  • 6. Resource: Cooperative Games – from Marie Baker, Tidewater Community College, Virginia A cooperative game or activity is a group problem-solving task. All group members must work together to overcome barriers or obstacles encountered. The failure of one person to work with the group can result in a total breakdown of the group task. Members of the team work for the betterment of the total group. This reaffirms confidence in self allowing even the weakest student many ways to succeed. Participants of cooperative challenges will learn to: a.Trust b.Make group decisions c.Communicate with others d.Share ideas, moving away from egocentricity e.Cooperate with others to complete an assigned task Copyright © 2019 by The Source for Learning, Inc.   • 7. The following is a short list of very creative and delightfully fun cooperative games. Others may be found in resource books listed in this handout. These books may be found in your local public library, the library or media center at the community college closest to you or in your local university library. Elbow Tag Participants stand side by side, facing opposite directions and hook one elbow. One person is ‘IT’ and chasing the other person. The person getting chased is ‘Safe” if they hook arms with another couple. Then the person on the other side of the chain, becomes the person being chased. Sock Wars The game begins with each team’s Jedi Knight standing at the very back of the team’s area, just in front of the end of the line. The rest of the players use rolled-up socks as space projectiles by throwing them across the midline toward players on the other team. A player who is hit by a flying sock sprawls out on the floor (as dramatically as possible) and waits for the Jedi Knight to come save him or her. The Jedi Knight does this with a touch of the rolled newspaper or soft plastic rod, at which time the teammate comes back to life and rejoins the action. If a sock hits a Jedi Knight, he or she also must sprawl out on the floor and can no longer save teammates. A round ends when all the members of one team are on the floor.

Continues through the whole circle. After the round with the dog, start in other direction with a cat.

Squirrel can jump – fox can’t jump but can change directions. Ooh – Aah Hand squeeze being passed around the circle. Add an ooh with the squeeze. Add an aah with the squeeze in the other direction.
  • 11. Hagoo – Unsmiling In the language of the Tlingit Indians of Alaska, hagoo means “come here”. Invitation to a stony-faced challenger to walk a laughing gauntlet without smiling. Two lines, about three-feet apart. Two players, one from each team, stand at opposite end of the line, bow and say, “Hagoo”. They walk toward each other, not breaking eye contact nor their reserve. If they cannot keep their reserve, they join the other team. Prui Want to find Prui? Everyone is blind folded. Mingle and shake hands and ask, “Prui?” If there is an answer of “Prui?” you have not found Prui. When there is no answer of Prui, you have found Prui, and can find hands to hold and open eyes. Games ends when everyone has found Prui.
