2. Moral dilemma
What IS a moral dilemma?
A situation in which a difficult choice has to be made
between two (or more) courses of action, any of which
entails going beyond the limits of what is morally, socially
or even legally acceptable.
3. We will look at two or three moral
dilemmas today
In small groups please, read the following moral dilemma(s) and
decide which course of action you would take.
Remember, you may not all agree, in fact, it is highly unlikely we
will!
When you have decided, identify the factors you considered in
making your decision.
Please be honest, and don’t say what you THINK is the right
answer. There ARE no ‘right’ answers…
4. Dilemma 1…
You are a nurse in an accident and emergency ward and the
doctors have not been able to save the life of a young man
who was brought in suffering severe injuries from a car crash.
You are looking for identification in his possessions and you
come across an organ donor card but it has not been signed
and is therefore not valid.
You know that if you forged a signature then the young man’s
organs would benefit numerous people and might even save
lives.
What do you do?
5. Dilemma 2…
You are a college lecturer and you have a very bright and
motivated student whose ambition is go to university to study
medicine.
The student needs an A in your subject to go to university but
has missed out by 1 mark. If you alter the result, they would be
able to fulfil their ambition and go to university.
What do you do?
6. Dilemma 3…
You are a full time student and working weekends and
evenings to support yourself.
You have an important essay to submit tomorrow and you
haven’t done any preparation. This is the final deadline for the
essay and if you don’t submit it, you could fail the whole
course. However, a friend of yours, who is doing the same
course at another college, has offered to send you a copy of
their essay which you could submit.
