ICT + EDUCATION =
ELECTRONIC LEARNING
KNOWLEDGE SOCIETY IS A TYPE OF SOCIETY
WHERE EVERYONE HAS ACCESS TO
LEARNING AND KNOWLEDGE IS
CONNNECTING VIA NETWORKS SUCH AS
CULTURAL GROUP OR THROUGH THE
MEDIA. THIS SOCIETY STRIVE FOR
KNOWLEDGE THROUGH ICT (information,
communication and technology)
teaching and learning occurs in networks
and these networks form hierarchies.
The networks (media, cultural activities,
etc.) form a link of knowledge acquisition
Access to knowledge occurs through
communication, which are passed on by
educators through new learning styles,
new tools, and new teaching strategies,
and new pedagogies…
Teachers should always create group work
so to form COLLECTIVE INTELLIGENCE…
 Teacher is the mediator of learning
 Face to face relationship is important for
learning.
 Find ways of collaboration and
cooperation that will be beneficial to ICT
and learning.
 well qualified
professionals.
 Prepared for
lifelong learning.
 Very mobile
professional
 Profession based
on partnership.
Teacher has to:
 work with others
 Work with
knowledge,
technology and
information.
 Work with and in the
society, to embrace
COLLECTIVE
INTELLIGENCE.
Teachers should develop technology rich environment in
the classroom to enable the learners to explore further…
 help to model creative innovators
 Active and inventive thinkers.
 Help learners to deal with real
issues and solve problems using
digital devices.
 Collaborative knowledge
construction(group work)
Design assessments
digital learning.
 Helping learners to
set their own
educational goals.
 Teacher should
give learners as
much summative
and formative
assessments.
Model digital work and
learning.
 Support student
success and
innovation.
 Communicate
relevant information
to students.
 Teacher must show
good technical skills.
 Teach safely, legally, and
ethically using digital information.
 Model learners who
acknowledge culture and global
awareness using the
collaboration tools used in ICT
application tools.
The department of education in South
Africa has published a document
regarding teacher training that will be able
to groom educators that will facilitate
electronic learning for every child. The
education system would love to
incorporate ICT (information
communication and technology) which is
learning through electronic sources; in
short it is called e-learning
 The teacher would be expected to enter
with a level of computer literacy and is
able to recognize electronic devices
that will be helpful in learning
 The teacher should have basic ICT
terminology and the different types of
ICT applications.
 understand the educational value and
potential of ICT in teaching and learning
The other
characteristics
o know when and
how to use ICT
applications to
achieve learning
o Teacher needs to
adapt to the new
technological
devices
o acquire the skills
to operate the
device and use it
for an effective
lesson
o teach learners
technical skills of
operate devices
and also teach
other educators
who are not
familiar with ICT.
 ICT in their lesson plans and for other
administration matters like collecting data,
which may be grades, attendance register,
and number of learners.
 The teacher has to be able to establish
communication amongst her and the
learners through e- mail, teach learners skills
to do their assignments, projects, and
presentations using various ICT applications
 The department of education together
with the department of basic education,
have come up with national strategic
plans to improve the quality of the
education system by stressing annual
assessments and regular basis checks by
the department commissioners.
Output 1: improve
teacher capacity.
 Training packages will be
made available for
teaches in various form
everywhere in the
country.
 Monitoring of teacher
development to be
made by SACE.
 Decreasing teacher
absenteeism.
Output 2: assessments
worth international
standards.
 Evaluation of
education system
made annually to
keep good learning
and teaching
standards.
 Well targeted
interventions made
available for poor
performing schools or
districts.
Output 3: improve early
childhood
development.
 All pre grade 1
learners/ children
have to attend
grade R.
 Improvements in
formal level of
teacher
qualifications.
Output 4: strengthen
school management.
 Enforce time
management to
reduce absenteeism
by doing school visits.
 Special needs
education will expand,
improvements in
equipment, support,
and staff will be made.
 Ensuring that all learners gain access to
high quality education.
 Establishment of early childhood
programmes and centres for child's needs.
 Consideration will be made for vulnerable
children (disabilities, poverty exposed).
 Creation of excellent education in maths,
literacy, and science
 Eradication of children under- nutrition.

  1. Knowledge society will compromise of different communities integrated together to form a network that will stretch to create hierarchies. This hierarchies are bases of media and information that are linking with one another.
  2. Teaching and learning that has been integrated with information technology and communications, a different type of education with different learning tools, materials, pedagogies, learning styles and teaching styles. A knowledge community is a type of community where knowledge bands a linking together to form networks of different media.
  3. Some of the teacher competency that South Africa would like to achieve by the end of 2014.
  4. Teachers are the most important agents of education and the system, they need to understand the potential of ICT and their applications so that they use them to motivated creative learners, inventive learners, collective intelligence through group work and collaboration. And help students acquire higher thinking skills.
  5. Some of the teacher competencies that are set out by the department to achieve high quality education.
  6. ICT integrated with learning and teaching would produce great learner and would be also a process that is redressing learning inequalities all over the country it will also improve personal learning experience. Therefore the guideline was published I order to give teachers an overview of what would be expected from them.. The teacher should have basic ICT terminology and the different types of ICT applications, teachers should be able to check the accuracy and the quality of information that they find on the internet using ICT..
  7. The teacher would be expected to enter with a level of computer literacy and is able to recognize electronic devices that will be helpful in learning, he/ she should understand the relevance the use of ICT and why it has been integrated in teaching and learning and ways in which she would be expected to assess learners using ICT
  8. The teacher needs to understand the educational value and potential of ICT in teaching and learning, the role of group work in ICT while learners are not losing the sense of individuality
  9. The other characteristics that a teacher has to acquire in order for learning to take place are as follows; he/she has know when and how to use ICT applications to achieve learning this means that it is not necessary to use ICT always. The teacher needs to adapt to the new technological devices and has to acquire the skills to operate the device and use it for an effective lesson. The teacher should be able to teach learners technical skills of operate devices and also teach other teachers who are too familiar with certain applications, teachers need to use ICT in their lesson plans and for other administration matters like collecting data, which may be grades, attendance register, and number of learners. The teacher has to be able to establish communication amongst her and the learners through e- mail, teach learners skills to do their assignments, projects, and presentations using various ICT applications. The teacher should be able to form a discussion room online that the teachers and the learners can use regarding school matters and subject uncertainties.
  10. The main objectives of the department of education is to have high quality education and access to it. The department see’s its important for the development of early childhood centers and programs that will eventually achieve early learning for kids. The department has also stretched and is hoping to establish special needs schools everywhere anywhere in the country.
  11. The national strategic plan for education in the future is focusing on the major factors and stakeholders that are underpinned in the education system, and it is posing possible goals that teachers and the education system need to achieve at a specific year. The strategic plan, is that learners and the teachers including everyone under education should be highly motivated. Parent who are active and eager with their children's education, a community that is active in school management.
  12. Teachers need to use ICT to manage and discipline the classroom, and they should teach learners safety skills while browsing through the internet and ways to avoid cyber bulling if they have an active social network account. Teachers organize the classroom to create a warm learning environment with the use of ICT to achieve learning outcomes, and they should teach learners research methods and they should use the results of the research for the purpose of learning and teaching. The ultimate goal is for teachers to use the role of ICT to incorporate it to new education innovation.
  13. Teacher development should be addressed in different ways and in every location if possible. The programs will be available as work shops, on e- education, and in every province at the district offices. Bursary programs will be given out to help teachers to upgrade their qualification. Remuneration awards are also planned to be given out to teachers to produce good marks provincially and around their districts. The curriculum will be built to meet the needs of the South African society, the education would be given attention form the districts especially those schools that are underperforming so that support they give out is targeted to the specific case.
