1. The Role of Women in Proclaiming the
Gospel
The role of women in the church body has been perverted
from one extreme to another with today’s liberal churches
promoting women to be teachers over the men in the
church body (contrary to 1 Timothy 2, 1 Corinthians 14 as
well as Titus 1 and 1 Timothy 3.) These women are also
encouraged to disobey scripture by taking authority in the
home (Ephesians 5:22) and to not dress biblically (1
Timothy 2 and 1 Peter 3) nor cover their heads (1
Corinthians 11) thereby causing great confusion in God’s
headship order.
On the other hand we see conservative groups
commendably following these commands yet many are
ignorant of what these commands stand for and many of
the women are bottle fed through their husbands and
pastors, not discerning for themselves, nor spreading the
gospel in anyway. Let’s look back to the history of the
early church and see what the example is through God’s
Word.
History shows that many women were oppressed by
Jewish men, being treated no better than animals and in
some cases, much worse. For the most part they were
not allowed to learn or go inside the temples. Their
husbands were putting them away (divorce) for little to no
reason and women had virtually no say in day to day

2. matters. We see Jesus changed that and elevated (if we
want to use that term) women to an equal status with men
when it comes to spiritual standing before God. (Galatians
3:28) There are, however, distinctive roles outlined in the
scriptures for men and women inside the body of Christ as
previously stated.
God’s Word shows us that godly women are to be helpers
to their husbands, in submission to them, not having
authority over the men in the church body and active in
spreading the gospel. Let’s look at the examples we see
in the New Testament church of the active roles women
played and how they fit into the proclamation of truth.
Many people believe there were only 12 men who traveled
with Jesus but the scriptures show us there were ‘many
disciples’ and among them were many women. (Let’s not
confuse disciples with the word apostles of which there
were only 12.)
Luke 8:1-3 And it came to pass afterward, that he went
throughout every city and village, preaching and
shewing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God: and
the twelve were with him, And certain women, which
had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary
called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils,
And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod's steward, and

3. Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him
of their substance.
Mark 15:40-41 There were also women looking on afar
off: among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the
mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome;
(Who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and
ministered unto Him;) and many other women which
came up with him unto Jerusalem.
Matthew 27:55-56 And many women were there
beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee,
ministering unto him: Among which was Mary
Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses,
and the mother of Zebedees children.
Luke 23:55 And the women who had come with Him
from Galilee followed after, and they observed the
tomb and how His body was laid.
We see that many women were traveling with Jesus and
He put women on an equal learning level in spiritual
matters, contrary to what was the custom.
John 6:60 Many therefore of his disciples, when they
had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can
hear it?
John 6:66 From that time many of his disciples went
back, and walked no more with him.

4. We see in the previous 2 verses that there were ‘many’
disciples. The greek word for disciple is mathētēs and it
means: learner or pupil.
With no gender distinction in the word, we see that women
are disciples and we see proof in the scriptures that there
were many women disciples, learners, pupils of Jesus
Christ.
Throughout Jesus ministry there were women learning
alongside the men. If Jesus wanted women to only learn
from their husbands, He would not have allowed them to
join Him and would have had them sit home and wait for
their husbands to come home and teach them. We see
this clearly is not the case.
1 Corinthians 14:34 Let your women keep silence in
the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to
speak; but they are commanded to be under
obedience as also saith the law.
This verse is pertaining to God’s declared headship order
(see 1 Corinthians 11) and when His body comes together
He expects His headship order to be followed. Women
should be respectfully silent when the men are leading the

5. Jesus picked 12 men as His apostles and this stands to
reason as men are the authority and should be the
leaders. This does not mean women are not allowed to
spread the gospel because the commission is given to
ALL in the church body, lest the scriptures be only
addressed to men, leaving the women out of
salvation. This goes against scripture and cannot be so.
The following scriptures have been used by the liberal side
contending for feminist views on women in authority over
men and although Jesus did choose to show Himself to
women first, instead of the men; scripture does not
contradict scripture so these in no way give proof for
women having authority over men. What it does give proof
to is that women are instrumental in and encouraged to
spread the good news.
Luke 24:9-10 And returned from the sepulchre, and
told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the
rest. It was Mary Magdalene and Joanna, and Mary the
mother of James, and other women that were with
them, which told these things unto the apostles. And
their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they
believed them not.

6. Mark 16:9 Now when Jesus was risen early the first
day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene,
out of whom he had cast seven devils. And she went
and told them that had been with him, as they
mourned and wept. And they, when they had heard
that he was alive, and had been seen of her, believed
not.
Luke 24:10 Mary mother of James, Mary Magdelene,
Joanna and the other women with them which told
these things unto the apostles
John 20:1-17 The first day of the week cometh Mary
Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the
sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the
sepulchre. Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon
Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved,
and saith unto them, They have taken away the LORD
out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they
have laid him. Peter therefore went forth, and that
other disciple, and came to the sepulchre. So they
ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun
Peter, and came first to the sepulchre. And he
stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes
lying; yet went he not in. Then cometh Simon Peter
following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth
the linen clothes lie, And the napkin, that was about
his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped
together in a place by itself. Then went in also that
other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and

7. he saw, and believed. For as yet they knew not the
scripture, that he must rise again from the dead. Then
the disciples went away again unto their own home.
But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping:
and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into
the sepulchre, And seeth two angels in white sitting,
the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where
the body of Jesus had lain. And they say unto her,
Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them,
Because they have taken away my LORD, and I know
not where they have laid him. And when she had thus
said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus
standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.
Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou?
whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the
gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him
hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take
him away. Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned
herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say,
Master. Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am
not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren,
and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your
Father; and to my God, and your God.

8. Acts 8:3-4 As for Saul, he made havock of the church,
entering into every house, and haling men and
women committed them to prison. Therefore they
that were scattered abroad went every where
preaching the word.
Women were among the ones scattered and preaching
the Word. This is not to be confused with what people
think of preaching today as a pastor or leader. This is
simply spreading the Word of God, the Good News of the
Gospel.

9. Luke 2:36-38 And there was one Anna, a prophetess,
the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was
of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven
years from her virginity; And she was a widow of
about fourscore and four years, which departed not
from the temple, but served God with fastings and
prayers night and day. And she coming in that instant
gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him
to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.
Let’s take a quick look in the Old Testament where God
has used women as His voice and leading.
Mirium:
Exodus 15:20 Then Miriam the prophet, Aaron’s sister,
took a timbrel in her hand, and all the women followed her,
with timbrels and dancing.
Micah 6:4 For I brought thee up out of the land of Egypt,
and redeemed thee out of the house of servants; and I
sent before thee Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.
Deborah: Judges 4 And Deborah, a prophetess, the wife
of Lapidoth, she judged Israel at that time.
Hulda: 2 Kings 22:24 So Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam,
and Achbor, and Shaphan, and Asahiah, went unto
Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of
Tikvah, the son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe; (now

10. she dwelt in Jerusalem in the college;) and they
communed with her.
2 Chronicles 34:22 And Hilkiah, and they that the king had
appointed, went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of
Shallum the son of Tikvath, the son of Hasrah, keeper of
the wardrobe; (now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the college:)
and they spake to her to that effect.
Naodiah: Nehemiah 6:14 My God, think thou upon
Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and
on the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets,
that would have put me in fear.
Isaiahs Wife: Isaiah 8:3 And I went unto the prophetess;
and she conceived, and bare a son. Then said the LORD to
me, Call his name Mahershalalhashbaz.
Phillips Daughters: Acts 21:9 And the same man had
four daughters, virgins, which did prophesy.
God used Esther to save His people
In the New Testament we see Paul commending the work
of many women in regard to the gospel.

Epaphroditus (Philippians 2:25), Clement (Philippians.
4:3), Philemon, Mark and Luke (Philemon), but also for:

Romans 16:3 Greet Priscilla and Aquila my helpers
(sunergos )in Christ Jesus:
Euodia and Synthyche
Philippians 4:2-3 I beseech Euodias, and beseech
Syntyche, that they be of the same mind in the Lord. And
I intreat thee also, true yokefellow , help those women
which laboured with me
(sunathleō) in the gospel, with Clement also, and with
other my fellowlabourers, (sunergos ) whose names are
in the book of life.

12. soon-ath-leh'-o
From G4862 and G118; to wrestle in company with, that
is, (figuratively) to seek jointly: - labour with, strive together
for.
These women labored, wrestled with, jointly, strove
together with Paul in the gospel
Paul commends many men that "labored in the Lord" as
well as women, Persis, Tryphena and Tryphosa
(Romans 16:6 and 12).
We see that women could have been a witness to Jesus
ascension into heaven.
Luke 24:33 And they rose up the same hour, and
returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered
together, and them that were with them,
The greek word for ‘them’ is:

13. ho, hay, to
The masculine, feminine (second) and neuter (third)
forms, in all their inflections; the definite article; the
(sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English
idiom): - the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.
Jesus then took them out to Bethany and was carried into
heaven.
Satan is a deceiver and he can lead people to believe that
women are to be liberal and doing everything and anything
they desire when it comes to preaching and teaching and
yet he has also captured the audience of many plain
groups in that they often suppress the women from
learning and discerning the Word for themselves. Many
plain groups have the misconception that women are to be
silent Christians and the men are to do the proclamation of
the Good News and most liberal groups are pushing
women into authority positions. Both are a dangerous
ditch to fall into.
The scriptures clearly show that women are very
instrumental in the proclamation of the Good News of our
beloved Lord and Savior and the guideline given to
women is that they are not to have authority over the men
in the body. Women are to remember that Eve was
deceived (and we are reminded of that in 1 Corinthians

14. 11) but not let that be a hindrance in proclaiming the
gospel, instead she should make sure she is in check with
the men who are her authority, to test her discernment.
If you are a born again follower of Jesus Christ, (whether
male or female) it is your joyful duty to spread the Good
News to the lost. The Lord has bestowed various gifts
inside the body and by using those, the proclamation of
the Good News will spread throughout the world. Don’t
hide your light under a basket. (Matthew 5:15)
