A genetic cross was performed between mutant and wild-type fruit flies to determine gene order and recombination frequencies. Wild-type females were crossed with mutant males that were claret and hairless. The progeny from wild-type females and mutant males were then crossed with fully mutant males. Offspring showed different combinations of traits indicating the order and distances between genes.
