and units
For example;
42 is split up as 4O and 2
89 is split up as 80 and 9
56 is split up as 50 and 6
5. Then put the tens and units into the top part of the grid and the
number that you are multiplying by down the side of the grid.
For example: 42 x 7:
x
7
40
2
6. Then put the tens and units into the top part of the grid and the
number that you are multiplying by down the side of the grid.
For example: 42 x 7:
x
40
2
7
Then multiply the tens (40) by the number on the side (7):
x
40
7
280
2
7. Then put the tens and units into the top part of the grid and the
number that you are multiplying by down the side of the grid.
For example: 42 x 7:
x
40
2
7
Then multiply the tens (40) by the number on the side (7):
x
40
7
2
280
And then multiply the units (2) by the number on the side (7):
x
40
2
7
280
14
8. Then put the tens and units into the top part of the grid and the
number that you are multiplying by down the side of the grid.
For example: 42 x 7:
x
40
2
7
Then multiply the tens (40) by the number on the side (7):
x
40
7
2
280
And then multiply the units (2) by the number on the side (7):
x
40
2
7
280
14
Finally, add the 2 answers (280 and 14) together:
42 x 7 = 280 + 14
= 294
