O3b is a company that plans to launch a satellite constellation in non-geostationary orbit to provide fiber-like internet access to remote and emerging markets. The constellation will initially consist of 8 satellites providing up to 1.2 Gbps connections with latency of around 120 ms, significantly better than current geostationary satellite internet. O3b aims to reduce costs and expand access to the roughly 3 billion people currently unconnected. The first satellites are planned for launch in 2012.
