2. Why New trends in higher education?
3 Reasons are particularly
noteworthy for influencing
recent innovation:
1. reduced return on
investment for students,
2. reduced government
spending,
3. and significant skills mis-
matches between
graduates’ abilities and
jobs available in the
market
3. What’s driving innovation in higher education?
“my university courses taught me all
about the theory of computer science,
but I couldn’t actually code.”
4. 6 Trends are particularly notable
{Report by Emal Dusst and Rebecca Winthrop, 2019
1.Online education:
Online education has become an increasingly
accepted option, especially when “stackable” into
degrees.
For Example: MIT now offers a supply chain
management degree with a portion of the curriculum
online through edX before students enter the on-
campus program.
5. 2. Competency-based education (CBE):
There is an increase in CBE, which allows students to
apply their work and life experience to their education.
These degree programs tend to be less expensive, self-
paced, and more career-oriented.
6 Trends are particularly notable
{Report by Emal Dusst and Rebecca Winthrop, 2019
6. 3. Income Share Agreements (ISAs):
It help students reduce the risk associated with
student loans. Insitutions which provides a newly
accredited applied computer science degree designed
to take two to three years. This requires students to
pay back 20 % of their income for the first 5 years of
employment, and if they don’t find a job, they aren’t
responsible for payments. Institutions share the risk
with the students, and in this particular program, are
held accountable for student outcomes.
AttainU, InterviewBit, Pesto Tech, AltCampus.
6 Trends are particularly notable
{Report by Emal Dusst and Rebecca Winthrop, 2019
7. 4. Online Program Manager (OPM)
organizations benefit both universities and
nontraditional, working-adult students. OPMs
help traditional universities build and maintain
their online degree or program offerings, while
opening new and flexible options to
nontraditional students. Generally, through a
revenue share model, the university provides the
content, while the OPM primarily puts it online
and leads the marketing efforts.
6 Trends are particularly notable
{Report by Emal Dusst and Rebecca Winthrop, 2019
8. 5. Enterprise training:
companies are filling the skills gap by
working directly with employers.
Given the massive mismatch in employer
needs and worker skills, there are many
companies working with corporations to
ensure employees are rightfully skilled.
6 Trends are particularly notable
{Report by Emal Dusst and Rebecca Winthrop, 2019
9. 6. Pathway programs facilitate increasing
transnational education, which serves as an
additional revenue stream for universities.
Pathway programs, which are a small but fast-
growing segment of the transnational education
market, help foreign students get admission into
U.S. institutions through bridging academic entry
standards.

11. Mobile Learning
User of Personalized mobiles devices such as
smartphones and tablets is trending with
their increased accessibility and efficiency.
Connecting mobile technology and devices in
the classroom/outdoor will allow teachers to
provide fully immersive, integrated learning
experience for all learning styles and abilities.
BYOD ( Bring your Own Device)
12. Immersive Learning with AR and VR
Augmented reality and Virtual reality is the cutting
edge technology adopted by organizations for
imparting practical learning experience.
Today. 67% are considering using AR and it is
expected to rise by 30% in the next 3 years.
Especially in Medicine and Engineering streams it is
very effective
13. Maker space – Innovative Labs
Hands-on creative ways to encourage
students to design, experiment, build, and
invent as they deeply engage in science
and engineering.
A maker space takes a collaborative
elements from a science lab, crafts corner,
computer lab or an art room to create
something of an impact.
For example:
Tech mahendra, Intel labs.
14. Gamification
Games are embedded with online learning
courseware as well as with the Learning
Management System to add more fun elements,
there by improving knowledge retention and
learner engagement.
Students are made to work in teams, collaborate
and get connected to many learners in the same
virtual space.
Research show that learner retain upto 9% more
using game mechanics in courses
15. Remote Proctored Assessments
Technology mediated assessments have
enabled a big shift from fixed-in-point
summative assessments to more continuous
and adaptive formative assessments.
Remote proctored Assessments solutions are
clearly more customizable, interactive, secure
and quick deliver with the pervasive use of
internet.
Ensure the authenticity of the candidate’s
knowledge during online tests through various
remote proctoring mechanisms
16. Artificial Intelligence
Adaptive learning through Artificial Intelligence
How to engage learners of different abilities in the
same classroom
Chabot's are used by organizations to resolve
queries through messaging without any need for
human interaction.
Machine learning along with natural processing and
speech recognition technologies are also facilitating
the development of conversational programs called
Chabot's.
In a way Chabot's are programmed to serve as
tutoring.
17. Cloud technology
Cloud computing will continue to make learning a
more streamlined experience for students.
Students will no longer worry about files and
documents being lost or deleted, or buying multiple
storage devices.
All assignments, Essays, content related project
documents etc., can be stored in Cloud and accessed
via any device or platform.
Centralized storage for resources in cloud sharing or
resources is done without increased expenditure or
additional time pressure.
18. Video-based learning
Short and interactive videos have changed the way
people learn, becoming a staple for the modern
learners. Example: SPOC’s 9small private online
courses )
Humans have attention span of 8 seconds. That
means by now your mind will start thinking another
topic.
KISS ( keep it short and simple)
Voice over enables learners with visual disability and
choose to provide audio scripts in different
languages to suit your learner needs.
I use to cook by seeing video tutorials
19. Learning Analytics: Big data and Little data
Big data is set to gain prominence this year,
providing personalized learning experience and
bridging skills gaps more effectively.
“What gets measured is what gets done”
Little data is personal activity data which when
analyzed by intelligent systems, is able to provide
key insights into the way students learn.
Big data is an important source of information and
insight for decision-making for educators.
20. Social Media as a Teaching and Learning Tool
Participation. Social media encourages contributions and
feedback from everyone who is interested. It blurs the line
between media and audience.
Openness. Most social media services are open to
feedback and participation. • Conversation. Whereas
traditional media is about "broadcast" (content transmitted
or distributed to an audience) social media is better seen
as a two-way conversation.
Community: Social media allows communities to form
quickly and communicate effectively. Communities share
common interests.
Connectivity. Most kinds of social media thrive on their
connectivity, making use of links to other sites, resources
and people
I used to get advice from doctor’s
through social media
21. Adaptive learning
Adaptive learning is a concept wherein every
student is provided with her own individual path
of learning depending on how much she already
knows or what she needs to know and the amount
of time she needs to comprehend a particular
concept.
The method and pace of instruction is customized
for each individual student, which could improve
their chances of truly understanding new
academic concepts.
With the help of technology (AI Chatbot) adaptive
learning can be implemented in courses.
22. Microlearning
Microlearning, or learning implemented in small,
objective-driven chunks.
A larger lesson is divided into its smallest components
so students can learn each one quickly and usually
independently.
The content may be delivered in videos, podcasts,
short articles, infographics, and other formats that can
be absorbed in minutes. So instead of setting aside
blocks of hours to master a full skill set, students
spend minutes mastering each detail and then move
on to the next step.
They can also demonstrate mastery by completing an
assessment and receive a badge they can add to their
portfolios and CVs.
23. Content Curation
Content curation is the process of gathering
related content, organizing it and then sharing it in
groups that provide more value than any one of
the pieces of content.
Content curation from existing information like
blogs, social media posts, videos and eBooks
relevant to your chosen topic, filtering through to
find the most accurate bits and sharing them with
your learners. This is how bespoke learning courses
are being adapted.
For example: Pearltrees, Diigo Education edition,
