Pa Pradoo Temple
Background
Pa Pradoo Temple is royal, third class, ordinary type temple. It was
originally called Pa Laylai temple. It is located in Rayong province, Sukhumvit
road. This is an ancient temple, assumed to be built in Ayutthaya period. There
was a monk named Upatchatien, originally lived at Noen temple (or known as
Intharasombut temple, currently combines with Lum Mahachai Chumpol temple)
found this abandoned Pa Pradoo temple in 2372 Buddha era. Within in the temple,
there were many Burma Padauk trees, remainders of ubosoth, Pang Saiyars
Buddha image and Pra Pratarn Apai Buddha image, the image in the attitude of
Pa Lilai. The monk, Upatchatien stayed in this temple since he found the place to
practice meditation. Afterward, the religious villagers built a cubicle for
Upatchatien and renovated the whole temple. And for the name of this new
temple, to name it after the name of the village and for the name to be different
from Pa Lay-Lai temple in Supanburi province, the villagers changed the name
and called this temple, ‘Pa Pradoo temple’.
6. 6
There is an ancient left-side reclining Buddha image which is the strangest
Praputtha Saiyars Buddha image in Thailand. Normally, when Pang Si Saiyars
Buddha image will be made, they always make the Buddha image in the attitude
of right-side reclining but the Pang Si Saiyars Buddha image in Pa Pradoo temple
is in the left-side reclining position. It is a very large Buddha image with 11.95
meters long and 3.60 meters high. The special feature of this left-side reclining
Buddha image is the left hand that supports the head of image. Observe from
the hair and clothes, this Buddha image maybe belongs to the Ayutthaya period
but no one still know for sure just how old this Buddha image is or even aware of
its history.
The Pang Saiyars Buddha image shrined outdoor until in 2524 Buddhist
era, the vihan was built over the Buddha image. Nowadays with both Praputtha
Saiyars Buddha image and Pra Pa Laylai Buddha image were renovated, the
temple is a landmark of Rayong. Later on, Pa Pradoo temple was promoted to the
royal temple, third class, common type in 2533 Buddhist era.
In addition, ubosoth in the temple belongs to early Rattanakosin period
which is used as a vihan for the laymen to make merit or pay respect to the
Praputtha Saiyars Buddha image. This ubosoth also has interesting fine arts which
has an origin in China, for example; gable end is decorated with the Lord Buddha
in the middle of lotuses, stork pinch frogs or a kankhot pan pruegsar motif with
lion play marble on each side.
