1. How to make Briquettes?
□What is Briquettes?
Briquette is the Fuel from the Fields charcoal. It is alternative cooking fuel.
You can use Briquettes just like you use charcoal.
It is made around various countries in East Africa (Malawi, Uganda and so on) for sales
and protecting environment.
<Merit>
1: make by Free
The materials to make Briquettes are everything free.
There are Garbage Collection like wood shavings, groundnut shells, sugar cane, and
sweet potato peelings, potato peelings, maize stems and so on.
2: Easy to make
You can make Briquettes during only 3~4 days.
You don’t need to take time and spend your labor for it too much.
3: Clean-burning
There is no poison because the materials are from food.
4: Environment- Friendly
Briquettes doesn’t need to cut tree while charcoals need many woods.
You can save the environment and prevent the good soil from draining.

2. 5: Possible to make cheaply and get many profit
You can make Briquettes by almost free.
It means you can get many profits because it isn’t need many cost.
□How to make Briquettes?
<Materials>
You can make the Charcoal by local resources.
 Garbage Collection( wood shavings, groundnut shells, sugar cane, and sweet potato
peelings, potato peelings, rice husks, maize stems etc)
 Oil drum can (200little is proper)
 Large stick
 Cassava, maize husks or rice husks for binder
So….
Briquettes have many merits for the environment and your business!!

3.  Mortar and pestle or bag and stick
<Preparations before making Briquettes>
Please prepare the Kiln before making Briquettes.
1: Cut a large opening for filling the kiln with the material you want to carbonize.
2: Cut several holes in the bottom of the drum. These holes allow air to flow through
the drum while burning, which results in a hotter fire and produces better charcoal.
3: A piece of sheet metal is needed to cover the top hole and prevent oxygen from
entering the drum, allowing the material inside to carbonize.

4. <Procedures>
1: Collect agriculture waste or field or market.
The agricultural waste has to be dried completely.
2: Stuff the air vents on the bottom of the drum with maize leaves
3: Put the drum on three stones
4: Put a large stick in the center of the drum
This will create on airway shaft to make the fire burn better.

5. 5: Put the agricultural waste. Start with maize stems.
Make layers using the agricultural waste and place maize stems in between each layer.
6: Remove the large stick.
7: Light the material at the bottom of the drum
8: The burning material produces a lot of smoke

6. 9: After 5-10 minutes, the smoke gets hot enough that you can ignite it to make the fire
burn more cleanly
Mix with a stick to make sure there is no unburnt material.
10: After another 5-10 minutes, carefully remove the stones.
11: Cover the drum with a metal lid
12: Seal the bottom edges and the top of the drum with sand or dirt to prevent oxygen
from entering
13Wait 2 hours for cooling down

7. 14: Take the carbonized material from the drum
15: Crush the carbonized material with a mortar and pestle or a bad with a stick
16: mix the crushed material with binder
Binder can be made from cassava, maize husks or rice husks
17: Use a compress machine or form them by hands

8. 18: Let the Briquettes dry in the sun for 3-4 days

<What is important?>
The main step in making Fuel from the Fields charcoal is carbonization, which requires
three things.
1: dry organic material (also called biomass)
The biomass may be any of a variety of agricultural waste materials including:
corncobs, sugarcane waste (bagasse), millet stalks, groundnut shells, palm leaves or
bamboo. It must be very dry in order to burn properly.
2: heat
The heat is generated by setting the biomass on fire
3: control of the amount of oxygen
The oxygen-free environment is created by sealing the drum with sand or soil.
