ХІД УРОКУ
І. ПІДГОТОВКА ДО СПРИЙНЯТТЯ ІНШОМОВНОГО МОВЛЕННЯ.
1. Greeting (Привітання)
T: Good morning dear children and guests. I’m glad to see you at our International Ecological
conference.
2. Aim (Повідомлення теми та мети уроку)
Т: Today we are going to discuss a very important problem, which requires urgent measures from
out government and from ordinary people. What problems do I mean?
The mankind faces a lot of different problems nowadays, but environmental problems are the
most important. Do you agree with this opinion? Why? Why not? Today our aim is to discuss the
problems of our environment and to try to find some possible solutions to them. We are here to
listen to your project devoted to the problem of environment and to discuss several questions
connected with pollution and other environmental problems. (слайд 1)
3. Warming up (Уведення в іншомовну атмосферу)
T: Many prominent people wrote about our planet and it’s protection.
What quotations do you know?
What is your favourite?
(Pupils’ answers)
The world is a fine place and worth fighting for. (Ernest Hemingway)
Our planet is showing us the red warning light – to be careful! (philosopher the Dalai Lama)
To take care of the planet is to take care of your own house.
Look after your planet, its only one we have. (Prince Philip of Britain)
ІІ. ОСНОВНА ЧАСТИНА УРОКУ
1. Speaking (Практика учнів у зв’язних висловлюваннях про проблеми довкілля)
T: But today we have a burning problem. It’s ecology.
By the way, what does the word “ecology” mean?
P: As for as I know the word ”ecology” came from Greek word which means “home”. This idea
of “home” includes the whole planet of ours.
T: Now our “home” – our planet is in danger. Now you should answer two main questions:
2. Is the situation really dangerous?
What can we do to protect the nature and to save our planet?
(Pupils’ answers)
P1: I want to tell you about water pollution. The situation is really gloomy and sometimes even
hopeless. Rivers, lakes, seas, oceans cover more then 70% of our planet. Scientists say “man will
die if oceans die”. Over 5 million tons of oil products pollute the ocean each year. About 2 million
tons of these products come from cars.
P2: Well, we see that water which is necessary for our life is polluted awfully. As for me, I want
to focus to another problem – the problem of air pollution. Nobody and nothing on the Earth could
live without air. People pollute the air all over the world.
P3: We must keep in mind that not only the industry pollutes the nature. Every year each family
create one ton of rubbish. A great number of dumps are all over the country. Just only some facts:
it takes more than 2 years to decompose paper. Cans and tins destroy more than 90 years. Plastic
packets decompose more than 200 years, glass – more than 1000 years
2. Reading (Розвиток навичок читання)
1) Pre-readingtask( Етап підготовки до читання)
Teacher: You are going to read an article about the Greenhouse Effect. Let me ask you: what
facts do you know about it? What are the reasons of the Greenhouse Effect? What are the
possible consequences (impacts) of Global Warming?
2) Reading ( Етап читання)
WHAT CAUSES THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT? (слайд 2)
Life on earth depends on energy from the sun. About 30 percent of the sunlight that goes
toward Earth is reflected by the atmosphere and scattered back into space. The rest reaches the
planet's surface and is reflected upward again as a type of slow-moving energy called solar
radiation.
The heat caused by solar radiation is absorbed by "greenhouse gases" such as water vapor,
carbon dioxide, ozone and methane, which slow its escape from the atmosphere.
Although greenhouse gases make up only about 1 percent of the Earth's atmosphere, they
regulate our climate by trapping heat and holding it in a kind of warm-air blanket that
surrounds the planet.
This phenomenon is what scientists call the "greenhouse effect." Without it, scientists
estimate that the average temperature on Earth would be colder by approximately 30 degrees
Celsius (54 degrees Fahrenheit), far too cold to sustain our current ecosystem.
HOW DO HUMANS CONTRIBUTE TO THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT? (слайд 3)
While the greenhouse effect is an essential environmental prerequisite for life on Earth,
there really can be too much of a good thing.
The problems begin when human activities distort and accelerate the natural process by
creating more greenhouse gases in the atmosphere than are necessary to warm the planet to an
ideal temperature.
Burning natural gas, coal and oil (fossil fuels) (слайд 4) including gasoline for
automobile engines (слайд 5) raises the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Some farming practices (слайд 6) and land-use changes increase the levels of
methane and nitrous oxide.
3. Many factories produce long-lasting industrial gases (слайд 7) that do not occur
naturally, yet contribute significantly to greenhouse effect and "global warming" that is
currently under way.
Deforestation (слайд 8) also contributes to global warming. Trees use carbon dioxide
and give off oxygen in its place, which helps to create the optimal balance of gases in the
atmosphere. As more forests are logged for timber (слайд 9) or cut down to make way for
farming (слайд 10), however, there are fewer trees to perform this critical function.
Population growth & urbanization (слайд 11) is another factor in global warming,
because as more people use fossil fuels for heat, transportation and manufacturing the level of
greenhouse gases continues to increase. As more farming occurs to feed millions of new
people, more greenhouse gases enter the atmosphere.
Besides there are some natural sources (слайд 12) of CO2 contribution into the atmosphere
such as volcano eruptions and forest fires.
Ultimately, more greenhouse gases means more radiation trapped and held, which gradually
increases the temperature of the Earth's surface and the air in the lower atmosphere.
THE IMPACTS OF GLOBAL WARMING (слайд 13)
Scientists agree that even a small increase in the global temperature would lead to
significant climate and weather changes (слайд 14), affecting cloud cover, precipitation, wind
patterns, the frequency and severity of storms, and the duration of seasons.
Rising temperatures would lead to melting glaciers (слайд 15) and raise sea levels as well,
reducing supplies of fresh water (слайд 16) as flooding occurs along coastlines (слайд 17)
worldwide and salt water reaches inland. Many of the world’s endangered species would
become extinct (слайд 18) as rising temperatures changed their habitat.
Millions of people also would be affected, especially poor people (слайд 19) who live in
precarious locations or depend on the land for a subsistence living. Certain vector-borne
diseases carried by animals or insects (слайд 20), such as malaria, would become more
widespread as warmer conditions expanded their range.
3) Post-readingtask (Етап перевіркирозуміння змісту прочитаного)
Use all the information from the article to fill in the three columns of the table; try to find
interlinks between facts, reasons and impacts of Global Warming. Speak out.
3. Speaking
T: you can help to reduce global warming! Think of 10 simple things or actions you can take to
help reduce global warming (слайд 22). How do you think, what can you do?
(Pupils’ answers)
T: Now look through the actions suggested by Larry West, compare them with yours and say
which of them you consider the most essential. Speak out.
TOP 10 THINGS YOU CAN DO TO REDUCE GLOBAL WARMING
1. Reduce/ Reuse/ Recycle (слайд 23)
Choose reusable products instead of disposables. Buying products with minimal packaging
will help to reduce waste. And whenever you can, recycle paper, plastic, newspaper, glass and
aluminum cans. If there isn't a recycling program at your workplace, school, or in your
community, ask about starting one. By recycling half of your household waste, you can save
2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide annually.
Facts about GW Reasons of GW Possible impacts
1.
4. 2. Use Less Heat and Air Conditioning (слайд 24)
Add insulation to your walls and attic, doors and windows – it can lower your heating costs
more than 25 percent, by reducing the amount of energy you need to heat and cool your home.
Turn down the heat while you're sleeping at night or away during the day. It can save about
2,000 pounds of CO2 each year.
3. Change a Light Bulb (слайд 25)
Be practical; replace regular light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs. CFLs last 10
times longer than regular bulbs, use two-thirds less energy, and give off 70 percent less heat. If
every U.S. family replaced one regular light bulb with a CFL, it would eliminate 90 billion
pounds of greenhouse gases, the same as taking 7.5 million cars off the road.
4. Drive Less and Drive Smart (слайд 26)
Less driving means fewer emissions. Besides saving gasoline, walking and biking are great
forms of exercise. Check out options for carpooling to work or school. Every gallon of gas you
save keeps 20 pounds of CO2 out of the atmosphere.
5. Buy Energy-Efficient Products (слайд 27)
When it's time to buy a new car, choose one that offers good gas mileage. Avoid products
that come with excess packaging, especially molded plastic and other packaging that can't be
recycled. If you reduce your household garbage by 10 percent, you can save 1,200 pounds of
CO2 annually.
6. Use Less Hot Water (слайд 28)
Buy low-flow showerheads to save hot water. Wash your clothes in warm or cold water to
reduce your use of hot water and the energy required to produce it. That change alone can save
at least 500 pounds of CO2 annually. Use the energy-saving settings on your dishwasher and let
the dishes air-dry.
7. Use the "Off" Switch (слайд 29)
Save electricity and reduce global warming by turning off lights when you leave a room,
turn off your TV, video player, stereo and computer when you're not using them. While
brushing your teeth, shampooing the dog or washing your car, turn off the water until you
actually need. You'll also reduce your water bill.
8. Plant a Tree (слайд 30)
If you have the means to plant a tree, start digging. During photosynthesis, trees and other
plants absorb CO2 and give off oxygen. They are an integral part of the natural atmospheric
exchange cycle here on Earth, but there are too few of them. A single tree will absorb
approximately one ton of CO2 during its lifetime.
9. Get a Report Card from Your Utility Company (слайд 31)
Many utility companies provide free home energy audits to help consumers identify areas in
their homes that may not be energy efficient.
10. Encourage Others to Conserve (слайд 32)
Share information about recycling and energy conservation with your friends, neighbors and
co-workers, and take opportunities to encourage public officials to establish programs and policies
that are good for the environment
4. Writing (Розвиток навичок письма) (слайд 33)
Environmental Problems
Fill in the gaps with words derived from the words in brackets.
There are many problems which (1)_______ (threat) our natural environment. Acid rain,
(2)_______ (globe) warming and air and water (3)________ (pollute) are among the most serious
ones. There are several ways to help improve the situation. Firstly, we should encourage
(4)_______ (recycle) because it is the (5) _______ (produce) of new materials which causes the
most damage. We must learn to reuse things like plastic bags and glass jars. Secondly, driving an
environmentally-friendly car is also (6)_______ (help). Furthermore, joining an (7)_______
(organize) which plants trees or cleans up beaches would be a (8)_______ (prove) that you are
5. really (9)_______ (concern) about the environment. Lastly, supporting groups such as
Greenpeace, which try to prevent many (10)_______ (environment) disasters, would help to
ensure that our planet will be clean and safe for the future generations.
Let's check the task (Слайд 34)
5. Listening
T: Listen to the text ‘Pollution in London’ and answer the question “What problem is the boy
worried about?”
I live in London. There are so many cars in the streets of the city that pollution is awful. Air is
made dirty and I really think our health is affected. I think it would be a good idea to have a ‘no
car day’ Everybody would have to use other forms of transport – like buses, trains, bikes, or even
just your feet – for one day. There wouldn’t be so much pollution and the roads will be so much
safer. We are only part of the environment. That’s why we should understand what the problems
are and how we can help.
(Pupils’ answers)
P 1: He is worried about air pollution in London.
P 2: He is worried that there are so many cars in the streets.
T: Now, children, answer my questions.
Are there any environmental problems in our hometown? What are you worried about?
(Pupils’ answers)
P1The river Latoritsa is polluted.
P2Litter is thrown in the river.
P3 Glass bottles, plastic containers and tins are thrown away.
P4 Trees are painted.
P5 Litter is not recycled.
P6 Baby trees are cut down.
P7 A lot of trees are broken.
P8 Trees are not planted.
6. Reading (слайд 35)
GLOBAL WARMING
As long ago as the 1960s Professor Bert Bolin predicted “global warming”, caused by an
increase in the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, would lead to significant
changes in the Earth’s climate.
1 __________
But most experts now agree that the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will double from
0.03% to 0.06% in the next 50 years and that temperatures worldwide will rise by 2° Celsius.
Although a temperature rise of 2° may not seem significant, the local effect may be much greater:
by 2025 a rise of 10° is possible in polar regions and 4° in Northern Europe. Indeed the first
effects will be felt by the end of the century-perhaps they are already being felt...
But how does the greenhouse effect operate and why should such a tiny proportion of CO2 have
such a harmful effect?
When living creatures breathe out and when things are burned, CO2 enters the atmosphere.
2 __________But the balance of nature has been disturbed. In power stations, in factories and in
cars, we are burning more and more fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas). Eighteen billion tons of
CO2 enter the atmosphere every year. And the destruction of forests means that there are fewer
trees to convert the CO2 into oxygen.
6. 3 __________
As sunlight enters the atmosphere, the surface of the earth is warmed. Some of this heat escapes
back into space, but the rest is trapped by CO2, which acts rather like the glass in a greenhouse,
allowing sunshine and heat to pass in but not out again.
4 __________
As the temperature rises, the amount of water vapour in the air will increase and this, too, will
absorb more of the Earth’s heat. The oceans, too, will become warmer and store more heat, so that
they increase the warming effect.
According to some scientists, the polar icecaps will start to melt and the oceans will expand as
more snow and ice melts. Because the exposed ground, formerly covered in snow, won’t reflect
the heat so well it will absorb more sunlight and this will lead to even more snow melting.
Scientists predict that the level of the sea will have risen by 1/2 to 112 metres by 2050. This will
affect many low-lying areas of the world – millions of people today live less than one metre above
sea level.
5 __________ For Northern Europeans, the extra warmth may be welcome – but there is also
likely to be increased rainfall.
But many areas may suffer: the southern states of the USA can expect hotter summers and less
rainfall, leading to worse conditions for agriculture, and the Mediterranean region may well be
much drier and hotter than now.
Many experts believe that the Greenhouse Effect will bring significant changes to the Earth’s
climate, though they don’t all agree how long this will take, or what form it will take. 6
__________
A) Until recently all of this was adsorbed by trees and plants which converted it back into
oxygen.
B) So the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere is increasing all the time.
C) Some areas may actually benefit: the higher temperatures may allow a longer growing
season for example.
D) At the time his predictions were regarded as science fiction.
E) But it certainly looks as if the inhabitants of this planet will have to get used to living in the
warmer world.
F) Consequently, the temperature rises.
G) Surprisingly, the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere has continued to fall.
7. Project Presentation “Eco Problems in Mukachevo”
T: You are going to listen to project about ecological problems in Mukachevo. The students of
this group are very concerned about water and air pollution in Mukachevo.
Project І “Eco Problems in Mukachevo”
Project ІІ “Eco Problems in Ukraine”
Project ІІІ “Global Problems”
Project ІV “How to save our Planet”
P1: Mukachevo is one of the beautiful town of Ukraine. It is situated upon the both banks of the
river Latoritsa. We are worried that the river is in great danger. A lot of people wash their carpets
and cars in the river. Many different chemical waste into atmosphere and pollute the air in our
town. We find the situation in our town worrying.
P2I am very concerned that forests around Mukachevo are cut down. We find the situation
worrying because new trees are not planted. People throw too much litter and in the wrong place.
They have picnics near the banks of the Latoritsa and leave a lot of rubbish – plastic bottles, tins
and paper. If people don’t throw away litter and put their litter in the bins, they reduce pollution!
Keep your town tidy!
7. 8. Writing
T : What can we do to help nature? Match a main- clause and an if-clause:
1. If we don’t throw litter in the river, 1. the air will be cleaner.
2. If we don’t cut down trees, 2. we will help them in winter.
3. If we protect nature, 3. we won’t cause water pollution.
4. If we put litter in the bins, 4. we will reduce using electricity.
5. If we turn off the light when we go out the room, 5. our city will be cleaner.
6. If you make houses for birds, 6. we will save the world.
9. Listening
Many famous people try to save our planet. What can celebrities do? Do you know any famous
people who give money for Green Organization, take part in charity concerts and set good
examples for young people?
One of these people is Michael Jackson who wrote a well-know song about the environmental
problems and created a video clip. Watch the video and say what problems the singer wants us to
think about. (Перегляд відеокліпа)
Now let's listen to the song again and this time your task is to fill in the gaps in the lyrics.
Listen to the song by Michael Jackson and fill in the gaps
