2. Line Project : Part 1
Breaking up the visual space
• On 9x12 inch paper, with pencil, create
a half inch boarder around the paper.
• Begin using both straight, and curved
lines across the page to break up the
visual space.
• Some of the lines my go only partly
across the page.
• The design can be either a geometric
style (straight lines, and sharp angles),
or a more organic style (curvy lines,
rounded edges).
• Basically you want to break up the
visual space into several smaller
shapes.
3. Line Project : Part 2
Repeating a shape in the design
• Cut out a simple shape of your
choice. About 2 to 3 Inches
large.
• The shape can be either
organic, or geometric
• Trace the shape onto the
design as many times as you
can…But…
– Do not over lap your cut out
shape.
– Keep the cut out shapes at
least a half inch apart.
– Do over lap the lines that
broke up the visual space.
– Try to fit the shape on the pace
as many times as you can
– Feel free to place the shape
going off the page if you like.
4. Line Project : Part 3
Line used as a design element
• OUTSIDE the cutout shapes, add
several different types of line
designs to fill in each shape.
• Be sure to create a different type of
line for each shape.
• Be sure to use at least 2 of each of
the following lines.
– Actual
– Implied
– Rhythmic
• The line design mus FILL the entire
shape.
• NOTICE: Avoid putting line design
into cutout shapes (Highlighted
areas in the photo).
5. Line Project : Part 4
Darken and Color
• Color in cutout shapes.
– Use paint, markers, or colored
pencils.
– Each time a line goes through
the shape, change the color
(even if just slightly).
– Feel free to use any colors you
like. But I recommend keeping
to all warm colors (reds,
oranges, and yellows), or all
cool colors (blues, greens, and
violets).
• Shade in the area with line
designs, and make lines bold
and solid.
– When shading think in terms of
light, medium, and dark.
