The word jackpot is always associated with winning something big. In Las Vegas, winning a
jackpot can instantly turn one’s life around. There have been many guests who checked-in
at a casino hotel who look forward to trying out their luck at either gambling or the many
slot machines. However, only a few have ever won multi-million dollar jackpots. Las Vegas
resident Stacey L. Tokunaga claims that this is part of the charm of Las Vegas. Here are
some of the biggest wins in Las Vegas history.
The biggest winner so far in terms of luck has been Elmer Sherwin, a World War II veteran
who first won $4.6 million during the opening of The Mirage. After winning, Sherwin
frequently visited the slots to become the first person to win the jackpot twice. Sixteen
years later, he would again win $21 million in the same Megabucks jackpot he had won
previously.

The winner of an Excalibur Casino jackpot wanted to remain anonymous after winning
$39.7 million while waiting for a basketball game. So far, it had been the biggest payout in
Las Vegas history, notes Stacey L. Tokunaga. The man decided that he would collect $1.5
million each year for the next 25 years as his payout method.
Not all of Las Vegas’ biggest winners won from slot machines. Kerry Packer, an Australian
billionaire, won somewhere between $20 and 40 million by playing blackjack and baccarat.
There was even a rumor circulating in Las Vegas that he tipped his doorman a million
dollars. However, it hasn’t always been all wins in the world of gambling. Packer would
reportedly lose $28 million in a casino in London.
Lastly, an elderly woman in the Palace Station Hotel won $600,000 in one of the casino’s
Wheel of Fortune machines. Seeing if she could try her luck, she stayed in Vegas for several
more months until she won $27 million in the Megabucks jackpot. As Stacey L. Tokunaga
points out, some people just don’t know when to quit.
