Collect of the Day: Almighty God, in our baptism
you adopted us for your own. Quicken, we pray,
your Spirit within us, that we, being renewed
both in body and mind,
may worship you in sincerity and truth; through
Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with
you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for

The Story of God’s
People
A READING FROM THE BOOK OF JOB 23: 1-9, 16-17
3. Read by Dr. Steven Shubert
1Then Job answered: 2“Today also my complaint is
bitter; his hand is heavy despite my groaning. 3Oh,
that I knew where I might find him, that I might
come even to his dwelling! 4I would lay my case
before him, and fill my mouth with arguments. 5I
would learn what he would answer me, and
understand what he would say to me. 6Would he
contend with
me in the greatness of his power? No; but he would
give heed to me. 7There an upright person could
reason with him, and I should be acquitted forever
by my judge. 8If I go forward, he is not there; or
backward, I cannot perceive him; 9on the left he
hides, and I cannot behold him; I turn to the right,
but I cannot see him. 16God has made my heart faint;
the Almighty has terrified me; 17If only I could vanish
in darkness, and thick darkness would cover my
face!”
Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s People:
Thanks be to God.
PSALM 22: 1-15 (sung) (Tone VIII.3)
My God my God why have you for-sa-ken me? *
and are so far from my cry and from the words of my
distress?
O my God I cry in the daytime but you do not an-swer; *
by night as well but I find no rest.
Yet you are the Ho-ly One, *
enthroned upon the prai-ses of Is-ra-el.
Our forefathers put their trust in you; *
they trusted and you de-li-ver’d them.
4. They cried out to you and were de-li-ver’d; *
they trusted in you and were not put to shame.
But as for me I am a worm and no man, *
scorned by all and despised by the peo-ple.
All who see me laugh me to scorn; *
they curl their lips and wag their heads say-ing,
“He trusted in the LORD let him de-li-ver him; *
let him rescue him if he de-lights in him.”
Yet you are he who took me out of the womb, *
and kept me safe up-on my mo-ther’s breast.
I have been entrusted to you ever since I was born; *
you were my God when I was still in my mo-ther’s womb.
Be not far from me for trouble is near, *
and there is none to help.
Many young bulls en-cir-cle me; *
strong bulls of Ba-shan sur-round me.
They open wide their jaws at me, *
like a ravening and a roar-ing li-on.
I am poured out like water / all my bones are out of joint;
*
my heart within my breast is mel-ting wax.
My mouth is dried out like a potsherd / my tongue sticks to
the roof of my mouth; *
and you have laid me in the dust of the grave.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son:
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit.
As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be:
world with-out end A-men.
A READING FROM THE LETTER TO THE HEBREWS 4: 12-16
Read by Sheila Cram
Indeed, the word of God is living and active,
12
sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it
5. divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is
able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the
heart. 13And before him no creature is hidden, but all
are naked and laid bare to the eyes of the one to
whom we must render an account. 14Since, then, we
have a great high priest who has passed through the
heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to
our confession. 15For we do not have a high priest
who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses,
but we have one who in every respect has been
tested as we are, yet without sin. 16Let us therefore
approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that
we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time
of need.
Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s People:
Thanks be to God.
Gospel Alleluia
Cantor: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
All: Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!
Cantor: He trusted in the LORD let him de-li-ver him:
let him rescue him if he de-lights in him.
All: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
Gospeller: The Lord be with you.
All: And with thy spirit.
Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ
according to Mark 10: 17-31.
All: Glory be to thee, O Lord.
17As Jesus was setting out on a journey, a man ran
up and knelt before him, and asked him, “Good
Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
18Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No
6. one is good but God alone. 19You know the
commandments: ‘You shall not murder; You shall
not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall
not bear false witness; You shall not defraud;
Honour your father and mother.’” 20He said to him,
“Teacher, I have kept all these since my youth.”
21Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, “You
lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the
money to the poor, and you will have treasure in
heaven; then come, follow me.” 22When he heard
this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he
had many possessions. 23Then Jesus looked around
and said to his disciples, “How hard it will be for
those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of
God!” 24And the disciples were
perplexed at these words. But Jesus said to them
again, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom
of God! 25It is easier for a camel to go through the
eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to
enter the kingdom of God.” 26They were greatly
astounded and said to one another, “Then who can
be saved?” 27Jesus looked at them and said, “For
mortals it is
impossible, but not for God; for God all things are
possible.” 28Peter began to say to him, “Look, we
have left everything and followed you.” 29Jesus said,
“Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house
or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children
or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the good
news, 30who will not receive a hundredfold now in
this age—
houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children,
and fields with persecutions—and in the age to
7. come eternal life. 31But many who are first will be
last, and the last will be first.”
The Gospel of Christ. Praise be to thee, O Christ.

Final Hymn “Who would true valour see”
Who would true valour see,
Let him come hither;
One here will constant be,
Come wind, come weather
There’s no discouragement
Shall make him once relent
9. His first avowed intent
To be a pilgrim.
Whoso beset him round
With dismal stories
Do but themselves confound;
His strength the more is.
No lion can him fright,
He’ll with a giant fight,
He will have a right
To be a pilgrim.
Hobgoblin nor foul fiend
Can daunt his spirit,
He knows he at the end
Shall life inherit.
Then fancies fly away,
He’ll fear not what men say,
He’ll labor night and day
To be a pilgrim.

Music Notes:
11. Two weeks ago the organ prelude was by Samuel Wesley, who,
as mentioned in the Music Notes, was notorious for fathering
children out of wedlock. He eventually married his first
relationship, but left her for another woman with whom he had
four more children, one of whom was Samuel Sebastian Wesley
(1810-1876). S.S. Wesley was involved in church music from
an early age, first as a boy chorister at the Chapel Royal and
subsequently as organist of Hereford, Exeter, Winchester and
Gloucester Cathedrals. He also composed a great deal of music
for the church. One of his most popular anthems is “Lead me,
Lord” which is extracted from a longer piece, “Praise the Lord,
O my soul”.
Alas, this morning’s final hymn was not included in our current
hymnbook; and had it been, the words would have been altered
substantially. We’re going back to the original text, from John
Bunyan’s allegory, “Pilgrim’s Progress”. It has been suggested
as a reflection on today’s gospel reading.
“REMEMBERING”
The choir is planning a special Remembrance Day concert on
Sunday 11 November at 4 pm. It will feature our choir and lead
singers with special guest Rob Crabtree, a Juno-nominated
bagpiper, all performing a variety of both sacred and secular
music (Scottish, Welsh, English and Canadian) that is associated
with both World Wars - and maybe a sing-along or two! A
programme is posted on various bulletin boards around the
church. It would be a wonderful thing to fill the church for this
concert, so please tell your friends and relatives. Advance
tickets at $8 ($10 at the door) are now available from choir
members and the church office. The money raised will be used
to support the Organ Restoration Fund.
A Job vs. a Ministry
12. Someone has said there is a huge difference between having a
job at church and having a ministry at church.
If you are doing it because no one else will, it’s a job. If you are
doing it to serve the Lord, it’s a ministry
If you are doing it just well enough to get by, it’s a job. If you
are doing it to the best of your ability, it’s a ministry.
If you’ll do it only so long as it doesn’t interfere with other
activities, it’s a job. If you’re committed to staying with it even
when it means letting go of other things, it’s a ministry.
It’s hard to get excited about a job. It’s almost impossible not to
get excited about a ministry.
An average church is filled with people doing jobs. A great
church is filled with people involved in ministry.
At the Advisory Board Meeting this past week, the various
Ministry Representatives discussed areas where we need more
help. Please find below a list of areas where our Ministries are
lacking in strength. If you are interested in joining ANY OF
THESE MINISTRIES, please see Rev. Dr. Harold Shepherd or
any member of the Leadership Team.
We would love to direct you to the appropriate Ministry Chairs
of any of the following: the Chancel Guild , the Outreach
Program, the Sunday School, the Day Care Board, the Sides
Teams, the Coffee Hour, the Lay Visitors, the Readers and
the Choir.
