PSALM 14 (Please remain seated.)
The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.”
         All are corrupt and commit abominable acts;
there is none who does any good.
The Lord looks down from heaven upon us all,
to see if there is any who is wise,
if there is one who seeks after God.
Every one has proved faithless;
all alike have turned bad;
there is none who does good; no, not one.
Have they no knowledge, all those evildoers
who eat up my people like bread
and do not call upon the Lord?
See how they tremble with fear,
because God is in the company of the righteous.
Their aim is to confound the plans of the afflicted,
but the Lord is their refuge.
Oh, that Israel’s deliverance would come out of Zion!
when the Lord restores the fortunes of his people,
Jacob will rejoice and Israel be glad.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son:
       and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be:
       world without end. Amen.

First Reading
A READING FROM THE LETTER OF PAUL TO THE EPHESIANS 3:
14-21 read by Helen Taylor
I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in
heaven and on earth takes its name. I pray that, according to the
riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened
in your inner being with power through his Spirit, and that
Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being
rooted and grounded in love. I pray that you may have the
power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth
and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ
that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the
fullness of God. Now to him who by the power at work within
us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask
or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to
all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the God’s People:
Thanks be to God.

Jubilate Deo p. 11

Second Reading
A READING FROM THE GOSPEL OF JOHN 6: 1-21
                               read by Darryl Nakamoto
After this Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, also
called the Sea of Tiberias. A large crowd kept following him,
because they saw the signs that he was doing for the sick. Jesus
went up the mountain and sat down there with his disciples.
Now the Passover, the festival of the Jews, was near. When he
looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward him, Jesus said
to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread for these people to eat?”
He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he was going
to do. Philip answered him, “Six months’ wages would not buy
enough bread for each of them to get a little.” One of his
disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him, “There is
a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish. But what
are they among so many people?” Jesus said, “Make the people
sit down.” Now there was a great deal of grass in the place; so
they sat down, about five thousand in all. Then Jesus took the
loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to
those who were seated; so also the fish, as much as they wanted.
When they were satisfied, he told his disciples, “Gather up the
fragments left over, so that nothing may be lost.” So they
gathered them up, and from the fragments of the five barley
loaves, left by those who had eaten, they filled twelve baskets.
When the people saw the sign that he had done, they began to
say, “This is indeed the prophet who is to come into the
world.” When Jesus realized that they were about to come and
take him by force to make him king, he withdrew again to the
mountain by himself. When evening came, his disciples went
down to the sea, got into a boat, and started across the sea to
Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to
them. The sea became rough because a strong wind was
blowing. When they had rowed about three or four miles, they
saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and
they were terrified. But he said to them, “It is I; do not be
afraid.” Then they wanted to take him into the boat, and
immediately the boat reached the land toward which they were
going.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s People:
Thanks be to God.

Collect for the Day: O God, the protector of all who trust in
you, increase and multiply upon us your mercy, that with
you as our ruler and guide, we may so pass through things
temporal, that we lose not the things eternal; through Jesus
Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy
Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

LIFE AND MINISTRY OF OUR COMMUNITY

No Bible study through July
Monday Night Bible study will resume on August 13th at 7:00
PM in the rector’s study. All are welcome.

Midweek service resumes this Thursday
The midweek eucharist will resume at 12 noon on Thursday,
August 2nd.

Book Club this Wednesday
The next meeting of the St. Barnabas Book Club will take place
at 10:30 AM in the rector’s study on Wednesday, August 1st
when Death Comes to Pemberley by P.D. James will be
discussed. Then, on September 5th, we will look at The Seven
Storey Mountain by Thomas Merton.

Remember this date!
Hilda Bell will be visiting Toronto at the end of August and will
be preaching at our 10:30 service on Sunday, August 26th.

Kids always welcome!
Sunday school will resume in the fall. Meanwhile, children are
invited to make use of the quiet play area at the back of the
church. There are some new Bible story pictures available for
colouring.

Donations of non-perishable food are needed!
Even though it’s summer, there are still hungry people coming
to our door for food… and there’s almost nothing left to offer
them. Your continuing donations are always gratefully received.

The Organ
We’re very excited that phase one of the planned organ
restoration will begin during the next week. The work will take
approximately four weeks and will involve major repairs and
cleaning (something that hasn’t been done in several decades).
It’s too early to say if we’ll be able to use the organ during this
period, but it’s anticipated that at least part of the instrument
will function sufficiently to accompany hymns, etc. If not, the
piano will be brought into action. So please, bear with us for
the next month or so.
Neil is happy to answer any questions you might have
(if he can!). Feel free to speak to him following the service, or
you can email him at nshoulton@gmail.com.

Summer Saturdays
Because of the organ restoration, the Saturday concerts have
had to be reorganized. It’s hoped that performers can be booked
for August 4 and August 11. Fiona Strachan will perform on
August 18. There will be no concert on August 25.

An extra concert
Today at 3 PM countertenor Tim Wong will perform a short
concert along with pianist Wesley Shen. A song cycle by
Robert Schumann is featured – Liederkreis Op. 39.

Announcements 29 July 2012

  • 1. St. Barnabas (Chester) Anglican Church The Church in the Marketplace Embracing the Community Pentecost 9 Sunday, July 29, 2012 361 Danforth Ave., Toronto, Ont. M4K 1P1 416-463-1344 www.stbarnabas-toronto.com Let us faithfully witness to the Risen Jesus, giving generously of our lives and substance for the relief of the poor and the sharing of the Gospel, bringing encouragement to all. (From the COLLECT for ST. BARNABAS) Welcome to St. Barnabas (Chester) Anglican Church
  • 2. The Church in the Marketplace Embracing the Community 10:30 AM MORNING PRAYER The 10:30 AM service begins on page 4 of the grey Morning Prayer booklet. The hymns can be found in the blue book of Common Praise. Organ Prelude Meditation on the name of BACH - Herbert Brewer Opening Hymn 435 “Take my life and let it be” (Mozart) Exhortation p. 4 Confession and Absolution p. 5 The Lord’s Prayer Venite (vv. 1-7) p. 7 PSALM 14 (Please remain seated.) The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” All are corrupt and commit abominable acts; there is none who does any good. The Lord looks down from heaven upon us all, to see if there is any who is wise, if there is one who seeks after God. Every one has proved faithless; all alike have turned bad; there is none who does good; no, not one. Have they no knowledge, all those evildoers who eat up my people like bread and do not call upon the Lord? See how they tremble with fear, because God is in the company of the righteous.
  • 3. Their aim is to confound the plans of the afflicted, but the Lord is their refuge. Oh, that Israel’s deliverance would come out of Zion! when the Lord restores the fortunes of his people, Jacob will rejoice and Israel be glad. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. First Reading A READING FROM THE LETTER OF PAUL TO THE EPHESIANS 3: 14-21 read by Helen Taylor I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name. I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen. Hear what the Spirit is saying to the God’s People: Thanks be to God. Jubilate Deo p. 11 Second Reading
  • 4. A READING FROM THE GOSPEL OF JOHN 6: 1-21 read by Darryl Nakamoto After this Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, also called the Sea of Tiberias. A large crowd kept following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing for the sick. Jesus went up the mountain and sat down there with his disciples. Now the Passover, the festival of the Jews, was near. When he looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread for these people to eat?” He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he was going to do. Philip answered him, “Six months’ wages would not buy enough bread for each of them to get a little.” One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him, “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish. But what are they among so many people?” Jesus said, “Make the people sit down.” Now there was a great deal of grass in the place; so they sat down, about five thousand in all. Then Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated; so also the fish, as much as they wanted. When they were satisfied, he told his disciples, “Gather up the fragments left over, so that nothing may be lost.” So they gathered them up, and from the fragments of the five barley loaves, left by those who had eaten, they filled twelve baskets. When the people saw the sign that he had done, they began to say, “This is indeed the prophet who is to come into the world.” When Jesus realized that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain by himself. When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and
  • 5. they were terrified. But he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” Then they wanted to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the land toward which they were going. Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s People: Thanks be to God. Benedictus p. 10 Creed, Versicles & Responses p. 11 Collect for the Day: O God, the protector of all who trust in you, increase and multiply upon us your mercy, that with you as our ruler and guide, we may so pass through things temporal, that we lose not the things eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Collect for Peace p. 13 Collect for Grace p. 13 Offertory Hymn 455 “Dear God, compassionate and true” (Repton) Homily Closing Prayers led by the Rev. Grace Caldwell-Hill p. 15 The Grace Announcements Final Hymn 434 “The love of Jesus calls us” (Aurelia) Organ Postlude Toccatinetto - Christopher Tambling We welcome all who are new or visiting today. James will be discussed. Then, on September 5th, we will look at The Seven Storey Mountain by Thomas Merton. Remember this date! Hilda Bell will be visiting Toronto at the end of August and will be preaching at our 10:30 service on Sunday, August 26th. Kids always welcome! Sunday school will resume in the fall. Meanwhile, children are invited to make use of the quiet play area at the back of the church. There are some new Bible story pictures available for colouring. Donations of non-perishable food are needed! Even though it’s summer, there are still hungry people coming to our door for food… and there’s almost nothing left to offer them. Your continuing donations are always gratefully received. The Organ We’re very excited that phase one of the planned organ restoration will begin during the next week. The work will take approximately four weeks and will involve major repairs and cleaning (something that hasn’t been done in several decades). It’s too early to say if we’ll be able to use the organ during this period, but it’s anticipated that at least part of the instrument
  • 8. will function sufficiently to accompany hymns, etc. If not, the piano will be brought into action. So please, bear with us for the next month or so. Neil is happy to answer any questions you might have (if he can!). Feel free to speak to him following the service, or you can email him at nshoulton@gmail.com. Summer Saturdays Because of the organ restoration, the Saturday concerts have had to be reorganized. It’s hoped that performers can be booked for August 4 and August 11. Fiona Strachan will perform on August 18. There will be no concert on August 25. An extra concert Today at 3 PM countertenor Tim Wong will perform a short concert along with pianist Wesley Shen. A song cycle by Robert Schumann is featured – Liederkreis Op. 39.    WHAT’S HAPPENING THIS WEEK?
