Organ Prelude Prelude on ‘The Easter Hymn’
                                 - Sir Charles Villiers Stanford

The Gathering of God’s People
Said from the side of the church. Please stand.
Celebrant: Why are we here? Whom do you seek?
All: We seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified.
Celebrant: He is not here; he is risen. Behold he goes before
                you.

Processional Hymn 203 “Jesus Christ is Risen Today”
                                             (Easter Hymn)

Celebrant: Alleluia! Christ is risen.
All: The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia!
Celebrant: May his grace and peace be with you.
All: May he fill our hearts with joy.

Collect for Purity p. 185
Glory to God p. 186
Collect for the Day: Lord of life and power, through the mighty
resurrection of your Son, you have overcome the old order of
sin and death and have made all things new in him. May we,
being dead to sin and alive to you in Jesus Christ, reign with
him in glory, who with you and the Holy Spirit is alive, one
God, now and forever. Amen.
Children’s Focus led by Emma Connell
The Story of God’s People
A READING FROM THE BOOK OF ACTS: 10: 34-43
                              Read by Dr. Steven Shubert
Then Peter began to speak to them: “I truly understand
that God shows no partiality, but in every nation
anyone who fears him and does what is right is
acceptable to him. You know the message he sent to
the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ—
he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout
Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John
announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with
the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about
doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the
devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all
that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put
him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised
him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to
all the people but to us who were chosen by God as
witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he
rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the
people and to testify that he is the one ordained by
God as judge of the living and the dead. All the
prophets testify about him that everyone who believes
in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s People:
Thanks be to God.

PSALM 118: 1-2, 14-24
Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; *
  his mercy en-dures for e-ver.
Let Israel now pro-claim, *
   “His mercy en-dures for e-ver.”
The LORD is my strength and my song, *
and he has become my sal-va-tion.
There is a sound of exultation and vic’-try *
in the tents of the righ-teous:
“The right hand of the LORD has tri-umph’d *
the right hand of the LORD is exalted / the right hand of the
   LORD has tri-umph’d!”
I shall not die but live, *
and declare the works of the LORD.
The LORD has punished me sore-ly, *
but he did not hand me o-ver to death.
Open for me the gates of righ-teous-ness; *
I will enter them / I will offer thanks to the LORD.
“This is the gate of the LORD; *
he who is righ-teous may en-ter.”
I will give thanks to you, for you an-swer‘d me *
   and have become my sal-va-tion.
The same stone which the builders re-ject-ed *
   has become the chief cor-ner-stone.
   This is the LORD’S do-ing, *
and it is mar-ve-lous in our eyes.
On this day the LORD has act-ed; *
we will rejoice and be glad in it.

Glory be the Father and to the Son: and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit.
As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be: world
  with-out end A-men.

A READING FROM THE FIRST THE LETTER OF PAUL TO THE CORINTHIANS
15: 1-11 Read by Maureen Willie
Now I should remind you, brothers and sisters, of the good news
that I proclaimed to you, which you in turn received, in which also
you stand, through which also you are being saved, if you hold
firmly to the message that I proclaimed to you—unless you have
come to believe in vain. For I handed on to you as of first
importance what I in turn had received: that Christ died for our sins
in accordance with the scriptures, and that he was buried, and that
he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures,
and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he
appeared to more than five hundred brothers and sisters at one
time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died. Then he
appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to
someone untimely born, he appeared also to me. For I am the least
of the apostles, unfit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted
the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his
grace towards me has not been in vain. On the contrary, I worked
harder than any of them—though it was not I, but the grace of God
that is with me. Whether then it was I or they, so we proclaim and
so you have come to believe.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s People:
Thanks be to God.

Gospel Fanfare and Alleluia
Cantor: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
All: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
Cantor: Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us:
therefore, let us keep the feast.
All: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Gospel
Celebrant: The Lord be with you.
All: And also with you.
Celebrant: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ
              according to Mark 16: 1-8.
All: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary
the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so
that they might go and anoint him. And very early on
the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they
went to the tomb. They had been saying to one
another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the
entrance to the tomb?” When they looked up, they saw
that the stone, which was very large, had already been
rolled back. As they entered the tomb, they saw a
young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the
right side; and they were alarmed. But he said to them,
“Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of
Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is
not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. But go,
tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of
you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told
you.” So they went out and fled from the tomb, for
terror and amazement had seized them; and they said
nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

Celebrant: The Gospel of Christ.
All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

St Barnabas 8 April 2012 - Easter Day

  • 1. St. Barnabas (Chester) Anglican Church The Church in the Marketplace Embracing the Community EASTER SUNDAY April 8, 2012 361 Danforth Ave., Toronto, Ont. M4K 1P1 416-463-1344 www.stbarnabas-toronto.com Let us faithfully witness to the Risen Jesus, giving generously of our lives and substance for the relief of the poor and the sharing of the Gospel, bringing encouragement to all. (From the COLLECT for ST. BARNABAS)
  • 2. Welcome to St. Barnabas (Chester) Anglican Church. The Church in the Marketplace Embracing the Community 10:30 AM HOLY EUCHARIST Our 10:30 AM service begins on page 185 of the green Book of Alternative Services. Organ Prelude Prelude on ‘The Easter Hymn’ - Sir Charles Villiers Stanford The Gathering of God’s People Said from the side of the church. Please stand. Celebrant: Why are we here? Whom do you seek? All: We seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. Celebrant: He is not here; he is risen. Behold he goes before you. Processional Hymn 203 “Jesus Christ is Risen Today” (Easter Hymn) Celebrant: Alleluia! Christ is risen. All: The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia! Celebrant: May his grace and peace be with you. All: May he fill our hearts with joy. Collect for Purity p. 185 Glory to God p. 186 Collect for the Day: Lord of life and power, through the mighty resurrection of your Son, you have overcome the old order of sin and death and have made all things new in him. May we, being dead to sin and alive to you in Jesus Christ, reign with him in glory, who with you and the Holy Spirit is alive, one God, now and forever. Amen.
  • 3. Children’s Focus led by Emma Connell The Story of God’s People A READING FROM THE BOOK OF ACTS: 10: 34-43 Read by Dr. Steven Shubert Then Peter began to speak to them: “I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ— he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name. Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s People: Thanks be to God. PSALM 118: 1-2, 14-24 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; * his mercy en-dures for e-ver.
  • 4. Let Israel now pro-claim, * “His mercy en-dures for e-ver.” The LORD is my strength and my song, * and he has become my sal-va-tion. There is a sound of exultation and vic’-try * in the tents of the righ-teous: “The right hand of the LORD has tri-umph’d * the right hand of the LORD is exalted / the right hand of the LORD has tri-umph’d!” I shall not die but live, * and declare the works of the LORD. The LORD has punished me sore-ly, * but he did not hand me o-ver to death. Open for me the gates of righ-teous-ness; * I will enter them / I will offer thanks to the LORD. “This is the gate of the LORD; * he who is righ-teous may en-ter.” I will give thanks to you, for you an-swer‘d me * and have become my sal-va-tion. The same stone which the builders re-ject-ed * has become the chief cor-ner-stone. This is the LORD’S do-ing, * and it is mar-ve-lous in our eyes. On this day the LORD has act-ed; * we will rejoice and be glad in it. Glory be the Father and to the Son: and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit. As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be: world with-out end A-men. A READING FROM THE FIRST THE LETTER OF PAUL TO THE CORINTHIANS 15: 1-11 Read by Maureen Willie
  • 5. Now I should remind you, brothers and sisters, of the good news that I proclaimed to you, which you in turn received, in which also you stand, through which also you are being saved, if you hold firmly to the message that I proclaimed to you—unless you have come to believe in vain. For I handed on to you as of first importance what I in turn had received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers and sisters at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to someone untimely born, he appeared also to me. For I am the least of the apostles, unfit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace towards me has not been in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them—though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. Whether then it was I or they, so we proclaim and so you have come to believe. Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s People: Thanks be to God. Gospel Fanfare and Alleluia Cantor: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! All: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Cantor: Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us: therefore, let us keep the feast. All: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Gospel Celebrant: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you.
  • 6. Celebrant: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark 16: 1-8. All: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. They had been saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you.” So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. Celebrant: The Gospel of Christ. All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Homily Anthem Alleluia (from cantata “Der Herr is mit mir” – God is with me) – Dietrich Buxtehude Affirmation of Faith p. 188 Prayers of the People led by Joyce Connell
  • 7. Confession & Absolution p. 191 Sharing Christ’s Peace p. 192 We Offer Our Gifts to God Offertory Hymn 231 “That Eastertide with joy was bright” (Lasst uns erfreuen) Prayer Over the Gifts: God our strength and salvation, receive all we offer you this day, and grant that we who have confessed your name, and received new life in baptism, may live in the joy of the resurrection, through Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen. The Eucharist: God’s Spirit Transforms Our Gifts “People of all ages and denominations who are baptized into Christ are invited and encouraged to share in communion. If you will not be receiving bread and wine, we would be pleased if you would join us at the Lord’s Table for a blessing.” Eucharistic Prayer 1 p. 193 The Lord’s Prayer p. 211 The Breaking of the Bread p. 213 Celebrant: Lord, we died with you on the cross. All: Now we are raised to new life. Celebrant: We were buried in your tomb. All: Now we share in your resurrection. Celebrant: Live in us, that we may live in you.
