Relator Terms in RDA
Basic ideas (1)
Relationship designators, aka relator terms, explain the role(s) of
an author in a work (manifestation)
Apply to personal, corporate or meeting names,
in main entry and added entries as well
MARC21: 100, 110, 111; 700, 710, 711; 720
Unimarc: 700, 701, 702; 710, 711, 712; 720, 721, 722
Repeatable both for main and added entries
Not including name-titles 2

Relator Terms in RDA
Basic ideas (2)
In MARC21 they are expressed as text strings (subfield e), and/or
a 3 characters code (subfield 4); see

In Unimarc they are expressed as numeric codes, and shown as
text strings by the software; see

Cataloging using relator terms and codes
The complete list is very large
- www.loc.gov/marc/relators/relacode.html
- we selected only the terms we will apply
The text of the terms can be difficult to remember, and error prone while typing
- we chose to use a popup menu for $e
The value chosen for $e corresponds to a unique $4 code
- we chose to generate $4 automatically from the $e

$e is filled in using the language of the cataloging agency (Italian)
$4 is a language independent code, useful for
- translation in the OPAC
- copy cataloging from foreign libraries
- linked data environments
$4 is filled in on record save
- JavaScript code added to Koha
Suggestion: use both relator term and code.

When the statement of responsibility is -let's say- relatively simple, no 1xx exist,
and more than one name added entries exist, we can assign relator terms and
codes to 7xx.

About records where 1xx is present, and 7xx are only name-titles (7xx$a$t), in
our library it arose a discussion about the meanings of 7xx$e:
is the $e the role in the manifestation described in the bib record?
or
does the $e refers to the role of the secondary author in the work or
expression described in the 7xx?
We know from Casalini that in this case the LoC doesn't use the 7xx$e subfield.
We decided to leave the record unchanged, and wait for more information about
this kind of records.
712 records are involved.

Algorithms seem not available when a complex 245$c and more than one added

Other cases

In these cases, and for original cataloging of course, applying relator terms and
codes is not a trivial task -- a professional cataloging experience is required,
including some specific skills.
Thus, to complete the process of updating old records, a manual action is
required.
It is a repetitive task. A tool with specific functionalities was prepared, thanks to
Koha APIs.

Adding relator terms and codes
to new records
Can be facilitated modifying the cataloguing interface:
- a popup menu for 7xx$e/j -- a closed list of values (a reduced set of all terms)
- a popup menu with a default value for 1xx$e/j -- author
- $4 filled up automatically on saving -- relator codes are difficult to remember

Authors are related each other in the catalog, and their relationships -thanks to
relator terms- are qualified:

A group of names form a "cloud" around a name, with valuable information:
- who studied his/her works

Conclusions
Adding relationship designators to old bibliographic records is possible for a
large part of a library catalog.
A good analysis of data is required, as well as good software tools and skills to
perform batch updates.
Adding relationship designators to new bibliographic records requires to help
the staff adding some functionalities to the cataloging module.
Their introduction leverages new services in the OPAC, enriches information
about authors and adds properties to the relationships among them.
