What kind of media institution
might distribute your media product
and why
Time Inc. UK
It is a consumer magazine distributing company and a digital publisher in the UK, They
have a large portfolio as they sell over 350 million magazine copies world wide per year.
They engage with 26 million readers and it is almost 66% of women and 42% of men. Time
inc. Has over 60 iconic media brands that captivate and inspire millions of readers every
year. The company is owned my time Warner and they publish a magazine that I have
loosely based my magazine around which is NME magazine which has a hugely successful
target audience which is slightly similar to the one I have although the range of the
audience is slightly older than my target audience. Time inc. Are very successful and know
a lot about the industry so they would be able to distribute my product in print and
digitally. If they were to distribute my magazine it would be highly influential for my
magazine as their knowledge in the business would help to get my magazine known and
members of their fan base may also buy my magazine. Because my magazine is mainly for
teens they also own channels such as cartoon network and parts of MTV which is aimed at
a teen audience which would highly benefit my magazine.
Independent institutions
Independent media refers to any form of media, such as radio, television, newspapers or
the Internet, that is free of influence by government or corporate interests. It is often
uses alternative media to refer to media products that distinguish themselves to the
mainstream media. In international development, the term independent media is used in
relation to the development of new media outlets, particularly in areas where there is
little to no existing media presence. To look at independent institutions I looked at and
researched many different independent music magazines. Most of these where webzines
and were free for public to look at or order a free print copy. I looked mainly at Under the
Radar. Its focus is on independent music, especially indie rock. However it also covers
other genres. It receives 240,000 readers per day. I feel like an independent institution
has it benefits as it is good for getting small media products such as my magazine
recognised by audiences, as the internet is available for everyone to use, but a downside
to it is that you wont gain much profit this way because these sorts of institutions are
free of charge so you wouldn't gain a sustainable profit to carry on with the magazine. I
probably will not use a independent institution as I want to reach a wide audience and
make a profit from my magazine.
Bauer media
Bauer media is a different media institution to the type of distributer I would need as they
distribute different music magazines the magazines mine is loosely based around like NME
Under the radar and Bliss. They distribute magazines such as Q and MOJO among other
magazines that are not related to the music industry. Bauer media is a well known privately
owned media company with over 300 media products in their name including TV, Radio
and internet based products they publish 38 million magazines per week which in terms of
distributing this will have a lot of benefits as their will be a large readership Because my
music magazine is different to their own I believe that they may be interested in
distributing my magazine as it may gain them a more diverse audience and bring in more
female viewers.
Conclusion
I had done research to compare different media institutions. This is so that I can decide
which media institution should distribute my magazine. I have looked into large,
successful institutions and I have also looked at independent institutions too. This is
because I needed to understand which would be best to distribute my music magazine.
This is important as I need to make sure the magazine successfully reaches the audience I
am targeting.
I have decided that I am Time inc may distribute my media product, this is because they
have 66% of female readers and my magazine targets females, this will benefit both them
and myself as they may gain more female viewers and I will also be able to use the high
percentage of female readers for my magazine as I will be able to attract their female fan
base. They also own youth television channels to promote my magazine and this gives my
magazine more of a chance in the media world and allows it to be recognised. I feel that
Time inc will be able to give my magazine more of an opportunity. Time inc. Have a better
knowledge than I in the media business and will know how best to distribute my
magazine.
