How do you measure
Digital First success?
         Steve Buttry
     Connecticut Newsroom
       February 29, 2012
1. Identify an important goal for your
position and discuss that goal with
your editor.
2. Consider what measurements
would show how well you were
achieving your goal. (Page views?
Twitter followers? Comments? Social
media referrals? Retweets? Likes?)
3. Explore what tools are available to
provide that measurement. (Omniture,
blog analytics, Facebook Insights,
Klout, Retweetist)
4. Consider how much money and/or
time it would take to provide that
measurement and adjust accordingly.
(Is the value of the metric worth the
time and/or money?)
5. Consider what the measurement
shows about your performance (and
what it doesn't show).
6. Repeat steps 2-3 (measurements &
tools) to provide metrics in areas that
the first tool didn't measure.
7. Repeat steps 1-6 for other
important goals.
8. Review your measurements
periodically (monthly would be good)
to assess your performance.
9. Determine whether and how you
should change what you're doing.
10. Determine whether and how you
should change what you're measuring.
11. Share and discuss that review with
your supervisor.
12. Keep in mind that metrics aren't
perfect.

  • 2. 1. Identify an important goal for your position and discuss that goal with your editor.
  • 3. 2. Consider what measurements would show how well you were achieving your goal. (Page views? Twitter followers? Comments? Social media referrals? Retweets? Likes?)
  • 4. 3. Explore what tools are available to provide that measurement. (Omniture, blog analytics, Facebook Insights, Klout, Retweetist)
  • 5. 4. Consider how much money and/or time it would take to provide that measurement and adjust accordingly. (Is the value of the metric worth the time and/or money?)
  • 6. 5. Consider what the measurement shows about your performance (and what it doesn't show).
  • 7. 6. Repeat steps 2-3 (measurements & tools) to provide metrics in areas that the first tool didn't measure.
  • 8. 7. Repeat steps 1-6 for other important goals.
  • 9. 8. Review your measurements periodically (monthly would be good) to assess your performance.
  • 10. 9. Determine whether and how you should change what you're doing.
  • 11. 10. Determine whether and how you should change what you're measuring.
  • 12. 11. Share and discuss that review with your supervisor.
  • 13. 12. Keep in mind that metrics aren't perfect.
