2. Introduction The presentation will examine the architecture created during the 18th century in Russia. It will cover from the reign of Peter the Great to Catherine II. The focus will be on the newly formed city of St. Petersburg. Peter built this city to create a new European city and bring Russia into the European landscape.
3. Winter Palace This was the third Winter Palace built by Peter I. It is the most grand and perhaps beautiful of the Winter Palaces built. It was designed by Domenico Trezzini and was not finished until the end of the 18th century. The building in the photo is probably not the one Trezzini designed because the builder, Rastrelli, changed the design.
4. St. Isaac’s Cathedral The construction of the church began in in 1817. It was designed by Auguste de Montferrand. The entrances are shaped to resemble the Pantheon in Rome. The building was finished in 1858.
5. Transfiguration Cathedral This building represents the first five-domed church in Russia. Pietro Antonio Trezzini designed this church in 1743. The building was finished in 1754.
6. Senate and Synod Designed by Carlo Rossi and built from 1829-1834, this building represents Peter’s separation of the church from the state. This ended the Patriarchate system in Russia and put a government official in charge of the church.
7. Smolny Institute Catherine II founded the Smolny Institute, an educational site for women in Russia, in 1764. It was built from 1806-1808 by Giacomo Quarenghi. On a side note, it was the home for the first Soviet government.
8. Conclusion The buildings shown in the previous slides showed some of the most prominent building in St. Petersburg. The architecture style used was very European and made St. Petersburg look like it should be in Southern Europe. Peter wanted St. Petersburg to be like Venice, with its’ transportation method being the boat. This did not happen exactly like he wanted it to but water is a very important aspect of the city. Overall, Peter used the building of St. Petersburg as just one of several reforms he used to bring Russia into the European world.
