This document summarizes Steve Portigal's approach to user research workshops. It discusses conducting fieldwork through observations, synthesizing findings collaboratively, and ideating new opportunities. The workshops focus on examining people in context, gathering stories, and applying insights to design problems. Past workshops are mentioned that took place in locations like Kyoto, London, Istanbul, and California.
2. This morning I have been teaching this workshop for several years. It has been very enjoyable to meet people with different backgrounds and learn from them. I want to share a quick introduction to our approach to user research, an overview of the workshop and then talk about some past workshop experiences.

13. Whatever you want to call it… Examine people, ideally in their own context Gather their stories What are they doing? What does it mean? Synthesize the stories Find the patterns and connections Apply to business and design problems Create new stories that reframe how the organization talks and thinks Use products, services, packaging, design to manifest that new story in the marketplace
