ADJECTIVE CLAUSE Done by: Mai Jamal Merza
ADJECTIVE CLAUSE Also called relative clauses. They come after nouns and modify them. In other words, they tell the listener or reader more about the person or thing that the noun refer to.
1-Using subject pronouns :who,which,that A- To form adjective clauses from simple sentences, who may replace subjects that refer to people. Examples -I thanked the woman. She helped meShe refers to the woman and better to connect the two sentences with who or that. we omit she and put who or that. I thanked the woman who (that) helped me. -The girl is happy . She won the race.The girl who (that) won the race is happy.
B- To form adjective clauses from simple sentences, which may replace subjects that refer to things or ideas. Examples -We are studying sentences . They contain adjective clauses. -We are studying sentences which (that) contain adjective clauses.
2-Using object pronouns: who, whom, which, or that Examples -The man was Mr. Jones. I saw him. -Him is object pronoun and refers to man .We omit him and add who, whom, that, which or doesn't add any thing because the subject I is in the sentence.  -The man who (whom or that) i saw was Mr. Jones.  -The man i saw was Mr. Jones.
3-Clauses with whose -Whose is used to show possession. It carries the same meaning as other possessive pronouns used as adjectives: his,her,its and their.  Examples  -I know the man. his bicycle was stolen.we omit his and add whoseI know the man whose bicycle was stolen -The student writes well. I read her composition.The student whose composition i read writes well. -Mr. .Catt has a painting. Its value is inestimable.Mr. Catt has a painting whose value is inestimable.
4-Using Where  Where is used in an adjective clause to modify a places. Examples The building is very old . he lives there .=in that building The building where he lives is very old.The building in which he lives is very oldThe building which he lives in is very old.The building that he lives in is very old.
 5-Using when -when is used in an adjective clause to modify a noun of times. Examples -I will never forget the day. I met you. I will never forget the day when i met you. -I will never forget the day when i met you.-I will never forget the day on which i met you.-I will never forget the day that i met you. -I will never forget the day i met you.-The preposition uses only with which and it come before which
