Students will create a mock “Instagram” page (not an actual page just selecting images AS
IF for Instagram) based on a primary work mentioned from the previous two weeks. In
other words, you can focus on what we have discussed such as Night and Fog, Schindler’s
List, or Life is Beautiful OR you can look into a mentioned work such as Anne Frank, Maus,
Shoah, etc. Students will select 6-8 images from or related to the selected work and create
captions for each. You should search for these images on the internet, but you may also use
some of the images used in the course (or if you have your own images you can use those!).
The overall work should resemble a curated and focused collection of images, but each
image should also stand on its own. You will place the images and caption in a word
document and upload it with your project narrative.Students will write captions for each
image, attempting to encompass all of the information needed to properly and ethically
describe the photo in just a short paragraph. Short and concise is key here. Think about how
long of a caption you’d be willing to read if you came across it. Hashtags (3-5 per photo)
should also be included. When selecting images students will ask: which image(s) best
portray the work and its overall message? How does this specific image further the moral of
the story? As a guide, students should search on Instagram for established accounts covering
the topic of the Holocaust and what approaches these accounts use to discuss the sensitive
issue. Examples of Instagram accounts include, but are not limited to:United States
Holocaust Memorial Museum – holocaustmusemHolocaust Educational Trust –
holocaustukMemorial de la Shoah – memorialshoahofficielMuseum of Jewish Heritage –
museumjewishheritageAuschwitz Memorial and Museum – auschwitzmemorialAnne Frank
House – annefrankhouse_officialStudents should also search Instagram or another social
media site for use of hashtags and what these terms actually produce before selecting
them. For the project narrative, students will discuss their thought process for caption
creation and hashtag selection. As stated above, the project narrative should be between
250-500 words, and for this project you may submit the photos with captions and narrative
as one single document. And I drop an example
