2. PREAMBLE
Fabrication in simple words would mean making something as per requirement from available
standard items. Making a tank out of available standard sizes of plates is one example. On a
lighter side, making story out of some known excuses would be fabricating a story!
We shall discuss various aspects involved in fabrication of pressure vessels. Purpose of this
book is to introduce fresh entrants in the line or students planning to enter into the line.
Pressure vessel is equipment in any industry which needs utmost attention since it is always
critical. Failure of pressure vessel in any industrial outfit could be very hazardous. There are
other types of fabrication however we shall concentrate more on pressure vessel fabrication.
It is not always possible to have direct interaction between the end user of the pressure vessel
and the fabricator and hence to have higher confidence level and reliability, there are certain
good engineering practices prevailing in reputed engineering companies.
Certain international standards are developed by practicing fabricators / engineers involved
with fabrication activities and the same are being followed as codes as reference. In India
IS2825 is developed however most popular is ASME codes which is developed by American
Society of Mechanical Engineers
There are definite stages to be followed for fabricating a pressure vessel. Each stage is very
important and recent codes provide acceptable level of each activity, it should be however
remembered that the standard of acceptable levels of each activity provides minimum level.
Attempt should be made to achieve better than code standards allow.
In order to be able to make something with quality level better than what codes would accept,
one needs extensive training and hands on experience in respective line. An attempt is made
here to provide basic preliminary training to beginners or near beginners in this line. This
would provide some basics but ability will have to be sharpened by detailed study of codes,
following the same during hands on experience continuously for sufficiently long time to be
confident about ability.
Codes have established certain criteria, standards, level of acceptance, formats, etc. based on
experience and feedback from industries. These are available in ASME codes published by
ASME in hard and soft copies. For most common use and most of the times referring to ASME
non fired pressure vessels codes Section II part A, B & C, Section V, Section VIII Div. 1 & 2 and
Section IX should suffice the purpose.
No attempt is made here to repeat what is already provided in the codes & other reference
books. The reader is advised to go thru the codes for more details.

5. FORWARD
During my association with manufacturing industries dealing with mechanical engineering items for over
45 years mainly in small and medium level industries I was involved in dealing with different types of
people connected to industry. I was at different level of position at different times and respondents
were at different level. The experience of dealing with people was something so special that I could not
resist sharing my observations to people who are about to be associated or are already associated with
these types of industry.
After thinking about the format in which the sharing would be ideal I thought of putting down on paper
whatever came to my mind about many aspects other than technical skills. The result is this booklet on
soft skills.
All aspects of soft skills are attempted to be covered and thorough reading would certainly help
understanding other than technical aspect of dealing with people the best way would be to have
discussions on the subject in the form of lecture series including open discussions so that more
interesting matters may come up. It would be advisable to have someone from outside for the lecture
series since someone from within the organization would be taken very lightly by others as people are
used to hearing him / her day in and day out.
The subject can be discussed at college level for final year students who are on the threshold of entering
industry. It can be amongst senior executives of the company and also amongst middle level and entry
level executives.
