Theme for Term 2: Be the change you wish to see in the world
Key Competencies for Term 2: To participating and contributing and managing self
Dear whanau and caregivers at home,
Term 1 flew by and was a huge success on all accounts with lots going on including the triathlon, the
swimming carnival and a fantastic week at camp for Room’s 1 and 15.
Term 2 is going to be another busy term with drama, cross county, Suter visits and syndicate sports.
This term (due to the morning being a littler fresher) Syndicate Sports will take place on a Friday
afternoon. Please ensure you child has suitable footwear, to take part in the winter sports and cross
country training. Your child will also be taking part in some coached hockey sessions in week 1 and 2
and training for the cross county, l which will take place at Branford Park in week 7.
Written Language/Reading
Our literacy focus for term two will be play scripts and explanation texts. Children in rooms 1, 2, and
3 will also be given the opportunity to work with a drama specialist on a weekly basis.
Mathematics:
The Syndicate focus has been basic facts – working on getting quicker with our time tables. It would
be beneficial if you could work on these times tables with your child. We are hoping to move everyone
on to much more challenging basic facts problems throughout the term.
We will also be exploring rich tasks, statistics and multiplication and division strategies.
Homework:
Thank you parents for supporting the home school learning connection. All homework is placed on the
blog. Please go to Nelson Central School and view the blog through the links. Homework is set weekly
and is often research or project based. If your child requires a reading or math program instead,
please come and chat with your teacher about this.
Integrated Unit
Our theme for this year is ‘Capture the Knowledge, Share the Wisdom. We will be exploring many new
ideas through the curriculum areas of social science, science, technology and the arts. Term two’s
focus will be Science as Inquiry – with the theme ‘Be the change you wish to see in the world’
Goal setting:
During this term we will review last terms goals, reflect and set some new ones (or keep the old ones
if needed).
2. Key Competencies:
This term’s learning tickets will be focusing on contributing and participating, follow ed closely by
managing self. We will be connecting these up with several of the UNCROC articles, and developing an
understanding of what our actions are to participate and contribute.
Milo Mondays and baking days:
Room 4 will start the week with the usual Milo Monday for Term 2 and 3. Please supply your child
with a cup (preferably not a precious one) and a packet of Milo if you have one available. We will also
continue with the baking on Fridays – and thanks to the parents that have been helping us out.
