4. Using Keywords
One of the most important things to consider
when trying to rank your site higher in
Google is Keywords. In the early days of
SEO, webmasters would stuff as many
keywords in to one spot in hopes of gaining
attention but would often mislead people and
search engines and gain nothing more than
page views. It's not always about getting
visitors to your site, but about getting the
right kind of visitors. These webmasters had
the right idea though because keyword
optimization is, well, KEY.
5. Using Keywords
An estimated 93% of all people buying products online or in
stores now do some kind of search online before they buy. And
what are they searching for? Hopefully your keyword. Here are a
few questions to get you thinking about what keyword to use:
1. Is the keyword relevant to your website's content?
2. Will searchers find what they are looking for on your site when
they search your keyword?
3. Will they be happy with what they find?
4. Will this traffic result in financial gain or other goals?
If you answered yes to all these questions your keyword has
passed the test.
6. Using Keywords
What‟s too much and what‟s too little?
Some people focus too much on the keywords and
not enough on satisfying visitor‟s needs so it‟s
important to find balance. Mentioning your
keyword only once is definitely not enough but you
don‟t want to use it so much that your sentences
start sounding awkward because your putting
words where they don‟t belong. You should use
your keyword three to five times on the page and
this does not include keyword variations.
7. Using Keywords
Don‟t leave out variations of your keyword. Subtle
differences no longer remain subtle when someone
else's page ranks higher just because you didn‟t have
the plural form of the word on your page. So there‟s
you first tip- don‟t forget the plurals ie: „free seminar‟ –
„free seminars‟. Next tip is to remember that not ALL
people know ALL acronyms so spell it out for them ie:
„SEO‟- „Search Engine Optimization‟. Lastly, although
it might make you cringe to do this, misspelling words
is one of the easiest ways to gain page rank. At least
give it a shot and see if it makes a difference for you. If
you know your keyword is a commonly misspelled
word you should take advantage of that.
8. Using Keywords
Similar keywords is another way to gain page
rank. If you‟re making a page to target „Social
Media Seminars‟ maybe you want to change it
up by swapping seminar for „course‟, „training‟,
„discussion‟ or „conference‟. While these are
different types of events one might search all
the same terms when trying to find out how to
get more info about social media.
9. Using Keywords
The closer to the top left your keywords are placed, the
more weight Google gives to them. Users will initially view
your Web site the same way the Google spider does, so
emphasizing the keywords from the top-left-down is a
good SEO practice. This is also why page titles are so
important. Some experts might say the title tag is the
most important tag on the page. It‟s the first word that the
spider „reads‟ so make sure to use this tag to your
advantage. As the hierarchy of the page cascades, it
becomes less and less important the further down you go.
I am not in any way saying the last few paragraphs on
your page are useless, just remember that the
title/headers/sub headers are what will be seen by
spiders first.
10. Using Keywords
Another thing to keep in mind is that a large
portion of searches are three words or more.
As people search for answers, they often
phrase their search terms as questions.
Example: “Where to eat in Bridgewater”.
11. Using Keywords
Creating a keyword strategy is the most
important SEO task you can perform to meet
both the needs of spiders and your potential
customers. Put these tips and tricks into action
to optimizing immediately. Don‟t forget to
analyze your page frequently so you know
which keywords are working to your advantage
and which ones you should reconsider.
