United States, and doing it in public is even worse because smokers not only harm themselves, but

(McLaren). It is horrible to know that some of the fishes that we have eaten may have been
contaminated by cigarette butts. Though many smokers already know of the health risks that come

According to the existing statistics, the greatest proportion of the world's population does not smoke
tobacco. As noted in the United States of America, only one out of four adults smoke. Tobacco

Use of tobacco has been associated with the cause of diseases that ultimately cause deaths. About

In November of 2006 Ohio put a ban on smoking cigarettes in all public places. The ban was put
in place to protect people from the effects of second hand smoke. Some of these effects include,
heart disease, cancer and other dangerous diseases. Ohio was the first tobacco growing state that
implemented this kind of ban. According to the Ohio Department of Health's website, about
280,000 public places and places of employment were affected by this ban and no longer would they
be exposed to second hand smoke.

For the business, the first offence is a warning and a $100 fine. The second time is a $500 fine

place. For an individual, the first offence is a $100 fine, double each time from there. If this becomes
a recurring problem then law enforcement will step in with a different punishment for the individual.
I'm sure that most people have seen the sign for "no smoking" in most, if not all, public places. This
is because it is a law for public places in Ohio. The signs must be posted at every entrance in the
building and be a certain size and be very clear. Not only does the sign have a picture of a cigarette
with a slash through it, but the sign must also contain a toll–free number for customers to call to
report violators.
In my opinion the ban was a very smart idea and every state should have it in place. It is proven that
smoking and even second–hand smoking can be dangerous and put your health in jeopardy. As a
non–smoker, the smell of cigarette smoke is very strong and unappealing, especially when eating
a meal. If Ohio did not have this law in place then I most likely would not go out to eat as much as I

The other group that would be affected by a ban on cigarette advertising would be the cigarette
manufacturing companies. The negative effects that can be experienced by these companies in case
of such a ban are direct. These companies could lower their productivity and sales in case of such a
ban and this could adversely affect their earnings. Once the advertisements are banned, there would
be less new smokers as compared to when the adverts are operational (Cohen, Shumate, and Gold
93). This means that advertisements on cigarettes mostly affect and influence new smokers than they
do to practicing smokers. For this reason, most of the smokers are influenced to remain indulging in

Each year, the U.S. government passes numerous laws to protect its citizens. Yet, one perfectly legal
product manages to seize over 400,000 American lives annually (American Lung Association,
"American"). Despite the efforts of the U.S. government to protect its citizens, the
government continues to ignore the single most preventable cause of premature deaths. The vicious
culprit attributed to these deaths is the common cigarette. Death, however, is not the only

Another area where cigarette smoking is costly is the working environment. Employers must spend
more money on smokers than on nonsmokers. Statistics indicate, in fact, that smokers do not attend
work as often, receive more health insurance, show reduced job performance, and require higher
maintenance expenses (Tobacco). Lastly, and most obviously, smokers themselves can save money
by not buying cigarettes. Simply put, cigarettes are stifling to economic growth. Cigarettes are not
only harmful to the economy but also harmful to the body.
Undeniably, the government should outlaw cigarettes because they are harmful to the body. First of
all, cigarettes contain nicotine, "an addictive drug, which when inhaled in cigarette smoke

Association, "American"). Secondly, cigarettes contain numerous chemicals and
poisons such as ammonia, arsenic, carbon monoxide, and formaldehyde. Some of these chemicals
even cause cancer. Besides harmful effects on smokers, they also have unpleasant effects on
nonsmokers. Nonsmokers often breathe in the smoke from burning cigarettes, whether they want to
or not. Thus, nonsmokers suffer some of the same ailments as smokers. Another party subject to the
dangers of cigarette smoke includes unborn and newborn children. Women who choose to smoke
during their pregnancy often put their child at risk of many defects.

Here are a few of the pros. Smoking in public reduce the risk of second hand smoking which is
worse than actually smoking. They will work more peacefully and more productive because that
"nasty" smoke smell isn't all over the place.
