Apartheid was a system of institutionalized racial segregation and discrimination in South Africa enforced through legislation by the white minority government against the non-white majority. Stephen Biko was a prominent anti-apartheid activist who fought for equal rights for black South Africans but was tortured and killed in police custody in 1977 for his activism against the racist apartheid system established by the British colonial government in South Africa.
