2. What is Prediction? A prediction is what you think will happen based upon the text, the author, and background knowledge. Prediction is an educated guess as to what will happen.

3. What is Inference? Inference is reading all of the clues and making your best guess. Inference is similar to prediction but they are not the same. When inferring you are using all of the clues to draw conclusions about what is being read.

4. What is the difference between predicting and inferring? When you make a prediction it will be answered by the end of the story. Predicting focuses on what will happen in the story while inferring focuses on what a character will do, how he/she is feeling, or making other judgements. An inference may or may not be answered by the end of the story.

5. When to Make Predictions Readers make predictions BEFORE reading a text Readers make predictions DURING the reading of a text

6. When to Make Inferences Readers make inference DURING reading Readers ask themselves questions as they read. These are not necessarily based on what the reader thinks will happen next. Inferences help the reader to understand what he/she is reading.

7. How to Make a Prediction To make a prediction you must question yourself Ask yourself what else might happen in the story Ask yourself what you think will happen next in the story

8. How to Make an Inference Inferences are made by asking questions while you are reading and using clues to help you make a guess as to the answers Ask yourself how the character is feeling and why he/she is feeling that way Ask yourself why the character behaves the way he/she behaves
