2. Etna the Stratovolcano
- Etna is a series of “Stratovolcanoes”
- Resulting from a magma reservoir beneath surface
- erupt with great violence
- considered most violent eruptions
- “Because they form in a system of underground conduits,
stratovolcanoes may blow out the sides of the cone as
well as the summit crater.” (livescience.com)
3. Geographical/Economical Benefits
- Wine vineyards on the mountain
- Each eruption creates better soil
- Grapes ripen “perfectly” in late November
- Grapes are usually harvested in late August
- Etna wine goes for as much as $160
4. Animals of Etna
- Many animals no longer inhabit the area
- Deer, wild boars, wolves, bears, and other large animals have
been wiped out from previous eruptions
- More than 40 species of smaller mammals, such as foxes,
hedgehogs, squirrels, weasels inhabit the area
5. Valle del Bove
- “Valle del Bove” translates to “Valley of the Ox”
- horseshoe shaped crater on eastern slope
- largest feature
- 6 kilometers long, 7 km wide
6. Bocca Nuova Crater
- Bocca Nuova translates to “New Mouth”
- formed in 1968; gradually increased its size over the years
- last major eruption of crater was in 1999
- active in January of 2013; causing tremors & smoke clouds
- brief but eruptive phases
- 1 of 2 central craters
7. Thyroid Cancer
- 2.3 more times likely than those not near Etna (also living
on the island)
- due to radiation exposure
- low iodine in water
- radioactive radon (The emission of elementary particles by
some atoms when their unstable nuclei disintegrate. Materials
composed of such atoms are radioactive)
8. Water Supply
- Etna soil comes into contact with aquifer
- Carbon Dioxide from eruptions affects water supply
- Magnesium & Boron get into water from volcano; exceeding
amount “allowed” in drinking water
- Low iodine (antiseptic)
9. Deaths of Mount Etna
- March 25, 1669 (largest documented eruption)
- over 20,000 died
- deaths are less often today
- estimated of 71,000 total deaths since first documented
eruption
- most eruptions are not physically harmful; usually do not end
in fatalities
- since 1994, only 9 people have died (2001)
11. Mount Etna 1994-2016
- In the past 20 years, Etna has erupted only 19 times, not
including minor activity, being smoke clouds, and rumblings.
- last deaths were during the 2001 eruptions; a total of 9
fatalities
- most recent eruption was December 4th, 2015
- currently (as of February 20th) Etna has not erupted in 2016
- eruptions occurred on average every 1.7 years before 2001
- eruptions now occur almost every year
13. - March 8, 1669
- killed over 20,000 people
- destroyed city
- rose 11,000 feet over sea level
- destroyed ½ of the city of Catania
*largest eruption
- December 15th, 1991
- lasted until March 31st,
1993
- killed 0 people
- 8,000 lost homes
- drinking water springs
were destroyed
*most recent large eruption
1991-1993
