● The term "library science" seems to have been used for the
first time in India in a book in 1916 in the Punjab Library
Primer written by Asa Don Dickinson and published by the
University of the Punjab, Lahore, Pakistan.

Definitions
● Library science – The study of collecting , preserving
and cataloguing of books , other documents in the library.
● Information science - the study of processes for
storing or retrieving information , especially scientific or
technical information.

library science and information science
1.Both are service oriented and changing fast
(vagianos,as cited in nitecki,1995)
2.Both approaches procure and handle
information and apply new technology (bohnert, as
cited , in nitecki ,1995)
3.Information work is an extension of library
work ( s. r. ranganathan , as cited in a team of expert ,2005)

facts, not fiction) while libraries based on
documentographic (doc. Based & recorded info)
