2. Diaper rash is a common problem with small children. You can normally treat and cure it within a few days. With continued care, you can prevent it from returning again. There are some basic tips and tricks that you can try.

3. First, get rid of the diaper. Wearing a dirty diaper creates a moist, warm environment that can make the skin raw. This provides a perfect breeding ground for yeast, fungus, and bacteria. This means that you should allow you baby to go bare bottomed whenever it is possible to do so. Although you can create a mess by doing so, it can be minimized. You can do this by putting your baby on a rubber mat that is covered with a washable cloth, without a diaper. If you can not do this, that is okay. You can try something else. Make sure that you change your baby often, and change as soon as possible after they use the bathroom.

4. You should stay away from commercial baby wipes. Many of these baby wipes tend to have irritating chemicals and alcohol in them. These can bother your baby's skin and take the natural protective oils that are necessary to keep the skin supple and soft. You should try using a soft washcloth with water, and possibly a little bit of mild soap. When using the soap, make sure that you rinse the soap off all of the way. You can use a clean washcloth or simply some plain water to get rid of any of the residue. The soap, however, may cause stinging if there is already a diaper rash. After cleaning the baby, thoroughly dry the area, without rubbing, with a soft washcloth or towel, however do it gently.

5. You will need to pass on using powder on your baby's bottom. An old wives tale says to use cornstarch or talcum powder on your baby's bottom to soak up any moisture. Studies show that using talcum powder can be dangerous or even fatal to your baby. This is because they inhale the powder and that causes problems. Cornstarch and cornstarch based powders have been shown to increase the growth of yeast. Yeast is part of the problem of diaper rash to begin with. This remedy is best left without.

6. If you are using cloth diapers, you will need to make sure they are completely dry before using them. Some doctors recommend that you line dry the diapers instead of using a dryer to dry them. You may want to try this at home if you have a place at home to do so. If you do the clothes dryer, do not use dryer sheets. Dryer sheets are more likely to have chemicals in them. These chemicals can irritate your baby's sensitive skin. When washing the diapers, you will need to use hot water. You will need to remember not to use bleach. If your baby has a diaper rash already, or gets them frequently, you should make sure that you rinse them more than once without the use of fabric softener.

7. You can try using a vinegar solution. Stale urine can burn your baby's skin the same way that acid can. This is because it is extremely alkaline. Alkaline means that the bacteria in it release ammonia. This too can be fixed. If you are using cloth diapers, you can add half a cup of vinegar to the rinse water when you wash them. However, if you use disposable diapers, you can use a vinegar solution of one part vinegar to eight parts water. You can use this mixture when changing your baby by wiping it on.

8. You will need to avoid plastic pants. These are normally worn over a diaper or over underwear. The plastic pants keep the moisture trapped inside. Also, if a rash is already there, you should stay away from tight fitting clothing and diapers. These tend to restrict air flow as well as cause chafing. You may want to try switching to a larger size or a looser diaper. You most likely already use more fitted diapers that have elastic, tighter leg holes. These are leak guards to prevent the wetness from getting out and the air from getting in.

9. You may try using a different type of disposable diaper. The materials or substances in the particular type of diaper that you use may be irritating the sensitive skin of your baby's bottom. If the other remedies are not working you may want to switch to other brands of diapers permanently. These tips should help keep your baby's bottom free from diaper rash, and clear up any that is already there.
