This document discusses hybrid professional learning networks that combine personal learning environments (PLEs) and managed learning environments (MLEs). PLEs are tailored to individual needs but open, while MLEs are controlled by organizations but less flexible. Hybrid systems offer the best of both by allowing individuals flexibility through PLE tools while also providing organizational control and persistence through MLE components. They provide scaffolding for learners of different technical skills by offering various levels of complexity from fully internal MLE use to full external PLE integration. This allows maximum user control within organizational boundaries.
