An inside look:
Building an all-
environment UPS

Challenge:
Our customer needed a UPS that can be easily
transported and used outdoors in any climate.
Solution:
A water-tight mini-container with a built-in HVAC
system. It’s mounted on a skid and includes a variety of
outlets around the outside for quick plug and play use.

For maximum runtime, the mini-
container included an Eaton 9390 UPS
with 30 minutes of battery backup.

Power quick connectors on the outside
of the unit feed into the UPS, providing
easy power on the go. Also, 15A GFI
outlets are provided for convenience.

The UPS can be up
and running quickly—
it just needs an input
power source. Placing
the power quick
connectors on the
outside prevents the
container from being
opened and exposing
the UPS to
contaminants.

An Eaton industrial circuit breaker with ground fault
protection is mounted at the top of the container.

The built-in HVAC unit
provides heat in cold
climates and air
conditioning in warmer
ones so the UPS and
battery can maintain a
safe operating
temperature. Fan and
ventilation ports are
incorporated too.

One of the final steps before shipping
out the unit was a water test to
ensure leaks wouldn’t be an issue.

The end result? A transportable,
harsh environment UPS that can be
up and running in hours, not days.
