Week 1: What’s Expected of an
Online Student
2. Prerequisites
In order to begin any online course, students must
meet certain prerequisites:
Dedicated, distraction-free study space
Computer with sufficient resources
Software (Word, PowerPoint, Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash)
Internet Access
3. Computer and Internet Requirements
Student must have access to a computer with the
required hardware and software requirements
Windows XP, 7 or Vista
Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)+
The online student must have access to the Internet
Internet Explorer Version 8.0+
Safari 5.0+
Google Chrome 13.0+
Firefox 5.0+
Viewing compatibility requirements
Latest version of Adobe Reader, Flash Player must be installed.
4. Software
Microsoft Word is required.
Students will be asked to do assignments using Word.
Microsoft PowerPoint is required.
Students may be asked to do PowerPoint slides.
5. Personal Study Space
The student must have a relatively quiet, dedicated
study space.
Space should be distraction-free.
Online access should also be available in this
dedicated study space.
6. Responsibilities of Student
The student should have the textbook prior to the
start of course.
Student should print out syllabus at start of course.
Know the due dates of assignments, exams, and forum
postings.
Know the course outcomes
Know how many forum postings per week
Know the key topics of the course
7. Time Requirements of Course
Students are responsible for committing to the time
requirements of each course.
A 4 unit course will require 10 -12 hours per week.
A 5 unit course will require 12-13 hours per week.
8. Check Email and Website
Online students should check the course website and
email at least once every 48 hours.
Once per day is preferred (if possible).
Check course announcements, Discussion Forum
postings
9. Discussion Forums and Attendance
Student attendance is based on Discussion Forum
postings each week.
A minimum of 2-6 postings per week is required (based on
course)
Postings must consist of answers to questions and response to
posting of another student.
Postings must demonstrate critical thinking and substance.
Postings cannot be mere social chatter or acknowledgements.
Additional instructions, including post length, is included on
the Discussion page.
10. Attendance Week
An attendance week is defined from Sunday, 12:01
AM to Monday, 11:59 PM.
Students who do not make the minimum number of
postings are considered absent and will be contacted
by either the instructor or Director of Online
Learning.
No postings over 14 consecutive days may result in
reprimand from the Dean of Instruction and possible
dismissal from the program.
11. Weekly Reading
Students are required to read materials every week.
Read assigned pages from text or articles.
Read Instructor Guidance notes on the website.
Watch the Powerpoints and Videos (if any) on the website.
12. Weekly Assignments
Students are required to complete a weekly
assignment.
Assignments may be problem-solving (such as mathematics),
essay, short-answer, projects, or research-oriented papers (as
found in graduate courses).
13. Quizzes
Students are required to complete a weekly quiz.
The quizzes (if required by the instructor) are usually
multiple-choice, true-false, or fill in the blank.
14. Term Paper
A term paper may be required by some instructors.
The student is responsible for writing his or her own
term paper, usually in the manuscript format
established by the APA (American Psychological
Association).

17. What Can a Student
Expect from an Instructor?
An instructor must respond to student queries (from
email or discussion forums) within 48 hours.
An instructor must grade and provide adequate
feedback on an assignment within 5 days of the
submission date.
An instructor must be available for two hours per
week for office hours.
In general: Instructor should be accessible to
students and respond to assignments in a timely
manner.
18. What Can a Student Expect from an

An instructor is not required to serve as private tutor
when student requires extra help.
Students falling behind should contact the Director of Online
Learning for a private tutor.
An instructor may serve as an individual tutor on a voluntarily
basis only.
