including NBA basketball. While he generally roots for his
Miami Heat, Talal Johany also enjoys supporting teams like
the LA Clippers and Boston Celtics.
Following a historic 2007-2008 season that saw Boston rise
from one of the worst teams in the league to the NBA’s best
record, the Celtics sought to make more history during the
2008 NBA Playoffs. Not all of their records would be
intentional, however, as the 66-16 Celtics wound up playing
the most games in postseason history. Prior to their 2008
championship, the 1994 New York Knicks and 2005 Detroit
Pistons held the record for most games played in a single
postseason. Both teams played 25 games, and both lost the
NBA Finals in seven games.
3. NBA Championship
The Celtics began their postseason against the
Atlanta Hawks. Despite Atlanta ranking as one of
the least successful teams to qualify for the
playoffs, the Hawks pushed the eventual
champions to seven games. Following a 99-65
drubbing in the deciding game, fans might have
expected Boston to gather momentum for their
Eastern Conference Semifinal date with LeBron
James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Unfortunately
for Boston, James averaged nearly 27 points per
contest, again stretching the Celtics to seven
games. Boston’s margin of victory in the decider
was much narrower, this time escaping 97-92.
4. Conclusion
In the Eastern Conference Finals, the Celtics
finally managed to push through in less than
seven games, ousting the Pistons, one of the
East’s perennial favorites, in six games. Entering
the NBA Finals against the Los Angeles Lakers,
Boston had already played 20 games. Their six-
game series against LA may have gone one game
longer had Boston not accomplished one of the
greatest comebacks in NBA Finals history,
overcoming a 24-point deficit in the third quarter
on the road. After the stunning game-four win
Boston dropped game five and returned to the TD
Garden, running away with a victory and lifting the
team's 18th championship banner.
