                  Wright Brothers

• The Wright brothers , Wilbur and Orville were two
    Americans.
• Wilbur and Orville Wright were the sons of Milton
Wright, a bishop of the United Brethren in Christ.
Wilbur was born on April 16, 1867, in Millville,
Indiana. Orville was born on August 19, 1871, in
    Dayton, Ohio.
• Their personalities were perfectly
complementary (each provided what the other
lacked). Orville was full of ideas and
enthusiasms. Wilbur was more steady in his
habits, more mature in his judgments, and more
likely to see a project through.
• While in high school, Wilbur suffered a facial
injury while playing hockey, which prevented
him from continuing his education. For the next
three years he continued his education
informally through reading in his father's large
  library.
• In their early years the two boys helped their
father, who edited a journal called the Religious
Telescope. Later, they began a paper of their
own, West Side News. They went into business
together as printers producing everything from
  religious handouts to commercial fliers.
• In 1892 they opened the Wright Cycle Shop in
Dayton. This was the perfect occupation for the
Wright brothers because it involved one of the
exciting mechanical devices of the time: the
bicycle. When the brothers took up the problems
of plane, they had a solid grounding in practical
  mechanics.
History
 Man’s romance with sky started back in 18th
century when Hot Air Balloon was launched in
    France.
 But there was one problem with these hot air
balloons that they could not be directed to the
location one wanted to visit. Rather wind was
one that decided destination and direction of
    balloon.
 With more research and time invested in the
concept of flying in the air, gradually led to
invention of gliders. This non motorized flying
mechanism was better than the hot air balloon.
 Year 1880 witnessed earliest steam power
airplanes. And during this time, Hiram Maxiam
came up with steam powered flying machine
    too.
 This designed plane's
    flight unfortunately led to
    crashing in the lake.
 The idea of flying was
    already there at the time
of 19th century but actual design of
“PLANE WITH ENGINE” was made and
    implemented successfully by Wright brothers.
 Ironically, with all that the Wright Brothers
accomplished later in life, neither of them ever
    graduated from high school..
 The differences of the two brothers are what
made them such a great team.
Fearless Mind!
 The History of the Attempts made by different
people may have prompted Wright Brothers not
to try for Solving the “Flying Problem”, But none
of them change their Firm Mindset.
    ('A contributors Mind-set')
 They did not have fear of failure.
 The Invention of Plane Was not a little thing to
    do at that time.
 The Systematic approaches followed by the
Wright Brothers to Achieve that Goal.
BELIEVE IN YOURSELF AND IN
        YOUR PARTNER
                                  Someone asked them,”Are
                                  you Aeronautical Engineer
                                  or Mechanical Engineer?”.
                                  They answered ,”No, But
                                  We Are “BELIEVERS AND
                                  ACHIEVERS, And
                                  unfortunately we don’t
                                  have degree course for
                                  that!!!!!”

The Wright brothers always presented a unified image to the
public, sharing equally in the credit for their invention. Biographers
note, however, that Wilbur took the initiative in 1899–1900, writing
of "my" machine and "my" plans before Orville became deeply
involved when the first person singular became the plural "we" and
"our"
“Problems were many ,
But they were only
interested in Solutions”
Steps towards the solution
 The first step towards the successful invention of
Aero plane, was research through reading various
    books on it.
 The Wright Brothers spent a great deal of time
    observing birds in flight.
 They noticed that birds soared into the wind and
that the air flowing over the curved surface of their
    wings created lift.
 Birds change the shape of their wings to turn
  and maneuver.
• They believed that they could use this
technique to obtain roll control by warping, or
changing the shape, of a portion of the wing.
• Over the next three years, Wilbur and his
brother Orville would design a series of gliders
which would be flown in both unmanned (as
  kites) and manned flights
Wright Brothers - Gliders
• Over the next three years, Wilbur and his
brother Orville would design a series of gliders
which would be flown in both unmanned (as
kites) and piloted flights.. They recognized that
control of the flying aircraft would be the most
crucial and hardest problem to solve.
• Following a successful glider test, the Wrights
built and tested a full-size glider. They selected
Kitty Hawk, North Carolina as their test site
because of its wind, sand, hilly terrain and
  remote location.
 In 1900, the Wrights successfully tested
their new 50-pound biplane glider with its
    17-foot wingspan and wing-warping
mechanism at Kitty Hawk, in both
    unmanned and manned flights.
 In 1901, at Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, the
Wright Brothers flew the largest glider ever
flown, with a 22-foot wingspan, a weight of
nearly 100 pounds and skids for landing.
Wright Brothers - Inventing the
              Flyer
• During 1902, the brothers flew numerous test
glides using their new glider. Their studies
showed that a movable tail would help balance
the craft and the Wright Brothers connected a
movable tail to the wing-warping wires to
coordinate turns. With successful glides to verify
their wind tunnel tests, the inventors planned to
  build a powered aircraft.
• After months of studying how propellers work
the Wright Brothers designed a motor and a new
aircraft sturdy enough to accommodate the
  motor's weight and vibrations.
• The craft weighed 700 pounds and came to be
  known as the Flyer.
• Wright Brothers - First Manned Flight
• The brothers built a movable track to help
launch the Flyer. This downhill track would help
the aircraft gain enough airspeed to fly. After two
attempts to fly this machine, one of which
resulted in a minor crash, Orville Wright took the
Flyer for a 12-second, sustained flight on
December 17, 1903. This was the first
successful, powered, piloted flight in history.
 However, many problems occurred:
 The wings did not have enough power to lift,
forward elevator was not that effective and its
wing warping technology caused it to spin out of
    control occasionally.
 In their disappointment, they predicted that man
will probably not fly in their lifetime.
 In spite of the problems with their last attempts
at flight, the Wrights reviewed their test results
and determined that the calculations they had
    used were not reliable.
 They decided to build a wind tunnel to test a
variety of wing shapes and their effect on lift.
Based upon these tests, the inventors had a
greater understanding of how an airfoil (wing)
works and could calculate with greater
accuracy how well a particular wing design
    would fly.
 They planned to design a new glider with a 32-
foot wingspan and a tail to help stabilize it.
“They can because they think
         they can.”

          • The attitude towards this
            Failure may lead them to
            success of fame or
            failure.
          • The way they choose
            was the one who lead
            them to a huge Success
            story.
TRUE FIGHTERS
 In spite of all the problems being faced by them,
Wrights refused to give up. They were fighters in
    true sense.
 Orville Wright and Wilbur Wright had requested
a patent application for a "flying machine" nine
months before their first successful flight, they
    were that confident.
 They kept reviewing the test results till they
found out that the calculations used for the
mechanism were not up to the mark.
 And towards end of year 1903, the Wright
Brothers effectively flew earliest plane with a
    man on it.
 The earliest of their flights covered around
120 feet in span of 12 seconds. And in the
same day, the brothers had another 2
    successful flights.
 Amongst all, longest was by Wilbur that
covered around 892 feet and stayed in the air
    for 59 seconds.
CONCLUSION
 The way Wright Brothers Achieved their Dream

 The way they approached the challenges and
Found a way out of it.

 All things lead them as a Leader for the future
    Aviation Inventions.

 The Approach Of “We Can” gave success to
    them at their Hard time.
Thank You

Invention of airplane(Wright Brothers)

  • 1. To identify how Contributor have found solutions to challenges they have faced, and how they practiced “designing solutions” Invention Of Air-Plane
  • 2. About the Contributor Wright Brothers • The Wright brothers , Wilbur and Orville were two Americans. • Wilbur and Orville Wright were the sons of Milton Wright, a bishop of the United Brethren in Christ. Wilbur was born on April 16, 1867, in Millville, Indiana. Orville was born on August 19, 1871, in Dayton, Ohio.
  • 3. • Their personalities were perfectly complementary (each provided what the other lacked). Orville was full of ideas and enthusiasms. Wilbur was more steady in his habits, more mature in his judgments, and more likely to see a project through. • While in high school, Wilbur suffered a facial injury while playing hockey, which prevented him from continuing his education. For the next three years he continued his education informally through reading in his father's large library.
  • 4. • In their early years the two boys helped their father, who edited a journal called the Religious Telescope. Later, they began a paper of their own, West Side News. They went into business together as printers producing everything from religious handouts to commercial fliers. • In 1892 they opened the Wright Cycle Shop in Dayton. This was the perfect occupation for the Wright brothers because it involved one of the exciting mechanical devices of the time: the bicycle. When the brothers took up the problems of plane, they had a solid grounding in practical mechanics.
  • 5. History  Man’s romance with sky started back in 18th century when Hot Air Balloon was launched in France.  But there was one problem with these hot air balloons that they could not be directed to the location one wanted to visit. Rather wind was one that decided destination and direction of balloon.  With more research and time invested in the concept of flying in the air, gradually led to invention of gliders. This non motorized flying mechanism was better than the hot air balloon.
  • 6. Year 1880 witnessed earliest steam power airplanes. And during this time, Hiram Maxiam came up with steam powered flying machine too.  This designed plane's flight unfortunately led to crashing in the lake.  The idea of flying was already there at the time of 19th century but actual design of “PLANE WITH ENGINE” was made and implemented successfully by Wright brothers.
  • 7. Ironically, with all that the Wright Brothers accomplished later in life, neither of them ever graduated from high school..  The differences of the two brothers are what made them such a great team.
  • 8.
  • 9. Fearless Mind!  The History of the Attempts made by different people may have prompted Wright Brothers not to try for Solving the “Flying Problem”, But none of them change their Firm Mindset. ('A contributors Mind-set')  They did not have fear of failure.  The Invention of Plane Was not a little thing to do at that time.  The Systematic approaches followed by the Wright Brothers to Achieve that Goal.
  • 10. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF AND IN YOUR PARTNER Someone asked them,”Are you Aeronautical Engineer or Mechanical Engineer?”. They answered ,”No, But We Are “BELIEVERS AND ACHIEVERS, And unfortunately we don’t have degree course for that!!!!!” The Wright brothers always presented a unified image to the public, sharing equally in the credit for their invention. Biographers note, however, that Wilbur took the initiative in 1899–1900, writing of "my" machine and "my" plans before Orville became deeply involved when the first person singular became the plural "we" and "our"
  • 11. “Problems were many , But they were only interested in Solutions”
  • 12. Steps towards the solution  The first step towards the successful invention of Aero plane, was research through reading various books on it.  The Wright Brothers spent a great deal of time observing birds in flight.  They noticed that birds soared into the wind and that the air flowing over the curved surface of their wings created lift.
  • 13.  Birds change the shape of their wings to turn and maneuver. • They believed that they could use this technique to obtain roll control by warping, or changing the shape, of a portion of the wing. • Over the next three years, Wilbur and his brother Orville would design a series of gliders which would be flown in both unmanned (as kites) and manned flights
  • 14. Wright Brothers - Gliders • Over the next three years, Wilbur and his brother Orville would design a series of gliders which would be flown in both unmanned (as kites) and piloted flights.. They recognized that control of the flying aircraft would be the most crucial and hardest problem to solve. • Following a successful glider test, the Wrights built and tested a full-size glider. They selected Kitty Hawk, North Carolina as their test site because of its wind, sand, hilly terrain and remote location.
  • 15. In 1900, the Wrights successfully tested their new 50-pound biplane glider with its 17-foot wingspan and wing-warping mechanism at Kitty Hawk, in both unmanned and manned flights.
  • 16. In 1901, at Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, the Wright Brothers flew the largest glider ever flown, with a 22-foot wingspan, a weight of nearly 100 pounds and skids for landing.
  • 17. Wright Brothers - Inventing the Flyer • During 1902, the brothers flew numerous test glides using their new glider. Their studies showed that a movable tail would help balance the craft and the Wright Brothers connected a movable tail to the wing-warping wires to coordinate turns. With successful glides to verify their wind tunnel tests, the inventors planned to build a powered aircraft. • After months of studying how propellers work the Wright Brothers designed a motor and a new aircraft sturdy enough to accommodate the motor's weight and vibrations.
  • 18. • The craft weighed 700 pounds and came to be known as the Flyer. • Wright Brothers - First Manned Flight • The brothers built a movable track to help launch the Flyer. This downhill track would help the aircraft gain enough airspeed to fly. After two attempts to fly this machine, one of which resulted in a minor crash, Orville Wright took the Flyer for a 12-second, sustained flight on December 17, 1903. This was the first successful, powered, piloted flight in history.
  • 19. However, many problems occurred:  The wings did not have enough power to lift, forward elevator was not that effective and its wing warping technology caused it to spin out of control occasionally.  In their disappointment, they predicted that man will probably not fly in their lifetime.  In spite of the problems with their last attempts at flight, the Wrights reviewed their test results and determined that the calculations they had used were not reliable.
  • 20. They decided to build a wind tunnel to test a variety of wing shapes and their effect on lift. Based upon these tests, the inventors had a greater understanding of how an airfoil (wing) works and could calculate with greater accuracy how well a particular wing design would fly.  They planned to design a new glider with a 32- foot wingspan and a tail to help stabilize it.
  • 21. “They can because they think they can.” • The attitude towards this Failure may lead them to success of fame or failure. • The way they choose was the one who lead them to a huge Success story.
  • 22.
  • 23. TRUE FIGHTERS  In spite of all the problems being faced by them, Wrights refused to give up. They were fighters in true sense.  Orville Wright and Wilbur Wright had requested a patent application for a "flying machine" nine months before their first successful flight, they were that confident.  They kept reviewing the test results till they found out that the calculations used for the mechanism were not up to the mark.
  • 24. And towards end of year 1903, the Wright Brothers effectively flew earliest plane with a man on it.  The earliest of their flights covered around 120 feet in span of 12 seconds. And in the same day, the brothers had another 2 successful flights.  Amongst all, longest was by Wilbur that covered around 892 feet and stayed in the air for 59 seconds.
  • 25. CONCLUSION  The way Wright Brothers Achieved their Dream  The way they approached the challenges and Found a way out of it.  All things lead them as a Leader for the future Aviation Inventions.  The Approach Of “We Can” gave success to them at their Hard time.
