eBook Distribution You wrote a book – now what? How to get your book out to over 3500 distribution points and get listed everywhere! It is not as hard as it appears. © 2011 First Edition Design eBook Publishing www.firsteditiondesignpublishing.com
The format of your book. This is the biggest obstacle for most authors. FACT – there are a gazillion different programs that people write their book with. (ok a gazillion is an over statement) However a standard does exist in the ebook industry. The basic file format you need to have your book in is a word doc, pdf and an epub. If you can get your book into a word doc your battle is almost over. If you can get your book into a clean pdf your half way there. If you have a properly formatted epub – that is awesome! (this does not mean clicking the convert button in InDesign to epub, this is not a proper file) First Things First © 2011 First Edition Design eBook Publishing www.firsteditiondesignpublishing.com
Why does my eBook have to look different from my print book? An ebook is a totally different animal. It is a different type of media. It is like comparing your print book to an audio book. Surely no one is going to see a pretty little graphic while listening to your book – and surely your print book isn’t going to omit any sound other than the flipping of pages. With that said – you have to accept that a ebook is not going to be like a print book. Print vs eBook © 2011 First Edition Design eBook Publishing www.firsteditiondesignpublishing.com
Your eBook is designed for the reader – not the author. You want the reader to have a great, smooth experience with your book. To make that possible, some things need to be left out. Do not insert page numbers Take out all headers and footers Take out all footnotes and notations Do not include an order form Do not include any charts or columns Do not include any extra line spacing Pick one style only – block or indent first word per paragraph ** for more explanation visit the faq’s at firsteditiondesignpublishing.com What to Take Out of Your Book © 2011 First Edition Design eBook Publishing www.firsteditiondesignpublishing.com
Now that you have your ebook in the proper file formats you are ready – whoa …………. What if I can’t get my book in the format I need? Let’s take a look at some options for getting you the correct formats. Talk to your software manufacture and see if they offer a conversion patch for you to download. If you can’t convert – cut and paste. Download Open Office – it is a free program. Copy your file into their word processing program, edit and save. Lots of free programs will let you take your file and convert to PDF. Here is one that is used a lot - http://www.freepdfconvert.com/ Adobe also offers a service for a very nominal charge. OK – Now that you have your ebook in the proper file formats you are ready – see next slide Second Things Second © 2011 First Edition Design eBook Publishing www.firsteditiondesignpublishing.com
Your now thinking that a gazillion places exist for me to distribute my book. (not so much an understatement this time) Where to start – Again you have a few choices – You can do it yourself – the downside of doing this yourself is that it is very time consuming. You will need to open up an account with each distribution point after you locate them and you will need to send them your files as they would like it; to include format, style and file extension. This is not an impossible task – just time intensive. Beware – unless you have a MAC you cannot submit to Apple. The pros – it cost you nothing and 100% of net royalties are yours to keep.
